I know Burns is gone and it's a new Arena for the Revs. But the Krafts still own the team and it's still the MLS. So we are not going to get a Kompany and JJ. IF we are lucky we might get a Kompany or JJ, not both. I would perfer a JJ.
We need a big, strong, smart, steady cdef to go along with Farrell (who is the most improved Rev this year, IMO). It doesn't have to be a big name/salary - that shouldn't be the hardest spot to fill. The big unknown to me is whether Mancienne's contract is guaranteed beyond this season ... A dmid would be important - even if it's just someone to add competition to the spot. I like what Caicedo brings there, but, while Zahibo has been much better since Arena arrived, I think he still has too many mental lapses (laziness?) in tracking players. Down the stretch, I'd like to see Castillo at left wing - he's got the speed and skill for it, and the desire to get forward and knows how to combine with Bou and Gil. To me, he just seems bored at left back, so he wanders and loses focus.
I agree with everything but Castillo. I was not a fan of his with the Nats and I am not a fan of his now. He is reckless on his tackles and when beaten at times he seems to be not interested in tracking back. From the LB position I don't think he adds anything to the attack that Jones cannot do, after all he was a forward/Mid in college. As moving him to a more attacking position again i don't think he is more productive than Jones. Then the x factor, Castillo 254k, Jones 56k. Jones=more bang for your buck
I like Castillo's passing and ability to combine in tight spaces. If he had to defend like a wing instead of like a FB that could be ok. However, the offense is currently set up to get attacking width from fullbacks, so he and jones would be occupying the same space. Penilla takes up more inside positions, and is a bigger threat to score. Although he would undoubtedly improve the crossing from wide areas (which we dont have targets in the box to hit), i think based on the style the revs play he'd end up reducing the effectiveness of the attack
The 2019 MLS Award ballots are here: See who made the cut in each honor September 19, 2019, 3:36PM EDT MLSsoccer staff Revs nominees for MLS Defender of the Year are: Bye and Farrell. Compare that to the defenders on the MLSPA Salary guide from June: Michael Mancienne . .$881,676.00 . $995,676.00 Antonio Delamea . . .$425,004.00 . $425,004.00 Gabriel Somi . . . . $391,000.00 . $425,000.00 Edgar Castillo . . . $250,000.00 . $250,000.00 Andrew Farrell . . . $209,230.00 . $294,230.00 Jalil Anibaba . . . .$101,250.00 . $101,250.00 Brandon Bye . . . . . $59,950.00 . .$63,245.00
Well If Im cleaning house, my first 4 in order are: 1) Mancienne 2) Castillo 2) Somi 4) Delamea Maybe we could leave unprotected and offload in the expansion draft? I read that the Revs have two guys practicing with them this week? one defender, one midfielder .....maybe Arena will clean house when he can
The players on the roster I want to see kept (in addition to the young homegrowns and GA players who arent in danger of being chosen): Turner Bye Farrell Jones Caicedo Gil Bou Penilla Caicedo That leaves 3 spots that could be used on some collection of players, none of whom would overly concern me to see join another team's roster
What would happen if, we went to a 3 FB line, and 5 MF's, that could put Castillo in slightly better position to feed the attack? Wonder what would happen if we sent as many players , off season, to play a high level of Futsol?
Interesting. He was on trial the same time Rodwell was here who according to this is still being considered https://www.fcupdate.nl/voetbalnieu...-buttner-kan-nieuw-avontuur-beginnen-bij-mls/ The Algemeen Dagblad reports this on Tuesday evening. The MLS club has a long-term contract ready for the thirties. Büttner, who played for Vitesse and Manchester United, can join next season with New England Revolution. The club is currently playing in the play-offs. The new season starts again in March. In addition to Büttner, Jack Rodwell (28) is also in the picture with the Americans. The former top talent is after his adventures with Everton, Manchester City and Sunderland looking for a new club.
Assuming this goes through, I'll be interested to hear what becomes of Castillo and Jones. I was hoping that Jones was going to stick.
Jones may still be a longer term project, or maybe Bruce pictures him further up the pitch. I'd guess (and hope) that Castillo is trade bait, though.
https://www.goal.com/en/news/former...ms-to-have-snubbed/197tzvl3abw5a1dcz91f7ebvt9 Based on his willingness to leave Vitesse, and choice to ignore other larger clubs around Europe I'm assuming the revs ponied up at least a TAM contract (1.5M-650k). Some of the other teams mentioned include Celtic, Rangers, Beşiktaş, and Stoke, which leads me to think that the absolute minimum salary was 1M/yr
I have to think that Arena's reputation is a key factor in getting and agreement. I think any quality player coming from a quality team background to MLS is going to want to be assured that they are coming at least to a competitive team - preferably a contending team (not to mention, one that has quality in logistics, training, player relations, fan base, etc.). I think the presence of Arena provides that confidence.
Arena and co. are definitely paying dividends. Zero chance Bou or Buttner would have signed under Burns
I'm legit excited to start up this thread for 2020, because there will be so much excitement for what's coming.
I think Jones, Buchanan, Wright, Herivaux, Firmino, Rennicks, Angking and Cropper are heading to Revs II next year. I don't see Buttner signing here meaning Jones is on his way out of the organization at all. But it'll be interesting to see if Jones plays as a fullback or winger with Revs II.
I'd be a bit surprised if Cropper is still on the team next year. Also, while I can see the logic of moving Jones to Revs II, they'll need some depth at left back. I think it's unlikely Castillo remains, unless he takes a huge pay cut.
I wonder whether players can play on both rosters - I think they can, outside of tournaments, where their first appearance ties them to that roster.
I'd have to think players have to be tied to one roster or another. I'm guessing here, but I think they have to be treated a separate entities. I think there will be a lot of "loans" going on as roster needs call for it.
