Of course they choose to market him as American - as of about 8 weeks ago he wasn't even on the Dutch national team radar, but was flying to the US for USMNT games... The claim you made is that they have a strong preference. My guess is "not really." Like, I doubt they are lobbying Dest, or his people, to choose the US over N'lands. My guess is they have a Blue Jersey with DEST on the back, and an Oranje jersey with DEST on the back - and are ready to hand him either.
This is a very good synopsis. I am thinking he takes the rest of the season and reassesses where he is w/ Orange... if it doesn't look promising then he may cap with us for the start of WC qualifying. I will be rooting for his Dutch competitors at RB in the meantime and hope that Dest doesn't improve too fast.
Ok. You think Ajax have a strong preference for Dest to play for the US. I think they are pretty agnostic and are prepared to try to profit whichever way he goes. Our positions are pretty clear. We'll see if Pierie makes any significant first team penetration at Ajax if they try to get him to switch to the US if they lose Dest! Meanwhile, it's looking more and more like Dest is going to take the bait from Koeman. I'm still unsure if that's the best move for the young man. Perhaps Ajax can talk him out of it!
Never said they are lobbying him either way. Ajax always has Dutch NT players and the country is already maxed out from a money perspective for them. Never said anything about that either. Seems like you are making fake arguments at this point and ignoring facts like Ajax has an XI full of NT players so they don't care about injury "risk" or the fact that O'Brien didn't get hurt because of US duty. He got hurt because his body wasn't aligned correctly.
After watching Dest singing the anthem, I’d be shocked to see him switch. The boy is an American; he ain’t going anywhere.
Dunno. If he was looking for strong inducements from Koeman, he probably got sobered by the list of competitors he was presented. Might be that the Telegraaf hyping got him to believe a straight road into the first team was looming. If there was a strong bait by Koeman, he probably would have taken it. Now I guess he's pondering his chances against the competition, that with every year is getting bigger, not less.
Yep. He's in a tricky spot. Would have been easier if Maz waiting till December to get hurt. But he's got to pick a road. Truth is neither is a "bad" choice - but still a big choice. I hope he takes the US 'cause we need more better wingers (hope Beerholder told him he could play midfield.) But I also can imagine the idea of playing national team games with your club-mates in front of your family and school-mates has to be pretty appealing.
Actually I would play him there if he would choose the States, because as a back he's physically not very imposing.
Me too. RWM if we ever make our occasional 3-5-2 experiment a regular thing, or a touchline RM. He's got good vision going forward.
Are we offering Dest a spot on the Olympic team (if he is not yet cap-tied)? Qualifying takes place in Mexico in March (Ajax release unlikely imo). Olympics take place in Tokyo in July/August. (release probable imo). Also, are we offering any friendlies, or are we taking a hard line?
He's still not good enough for the vaunted Dutch national team. They don't need these types of guys....

If you keep arguing Ajax does not have an interest in Dest playing for the US, here is yet another piece of evidence you can totally ignore: https://www.ajax.nl/streams/actueel/ajax-en-espn-sluiten-mediapartnership-in-de-vs.htm
Personally-- I don't think they will. Mazraouai picked Morocco last year and I think Ajax' stance is to stay away. My only point is that Ajax the club marketing side have 100% interest in him playing for the US. The offices in NYC, full page ad, dressing him up in an American flag, now ESPN+ deal in just this calendar year alone. Technical side I believe prefers he plays for the Dutch but it won't effect his playing time at all if he picks the US. It didn't effect Ziyech or Maz. They have an XI with full NT players for Argentina, Mexico, Serbia, Cameroon... they don't really care where guys are from or who they play for. Just that they are good.
Nope. It's his decision about his future. His future with Ajax only lasts until they see fit to end it, with a big sell or a bust future will tell. So what Ajax wants has no feet and by the way, the coach who made the board give him a contract in the first place and whom he respects immensely wants him in the Orange shirt.
