    Sergino Dest: 6,5
Verloor af en toe de grip op Guedes, maar hield zich knap staande in Mestalla. Aanvallend niet de inbreng die hij kan hebben, maar liet Ziyech zeker in de eerste helft wel renderen aan de rechterkant.

    Sergino Dest: 6.5
Occasionally lost control of Guedes, but kept himself standing well in Mestalla. In attacking sense not the input he can bring, but certainly let Ziyech be effective in the first half on the right side.

Won 2-0 fwiw. Ajax still top. Neither Maz nor Pierie on the bench.

Hope they can keep van de Beek past Xmas break, but the rumors are flying.

  5. Attacking wise Dest was an 8, defensive wise a 5. Was several times beaten or left the gate open.

Ajax wants £100m for vdBeek. I doubt anyone is going to plop that much without watching him until the summer.

  7. They don't want him to leave this winter, so a nice sum to fend clubs off. However if Real keeps on sucking in the two coming CL matches, the urge could get too strong.

Ajax should try to hold vdBeek, but you know what they say about a Dutchman and his money...

Let's talk about Dest (@ Ajax). I haven't actually been able to watch full Ajax matches*, just goals/highlights/touches, but I feel a consensus has emerged. Dest is great going forward, and regularly makes incisive passes that create chances, but he is not strong defensively. It's a weakness he'll have to work hard to correct, if he wants to become a complete player.

What's not as clear to me is whether Dest will ever really have to work on his defense at Ajax. Let's start with the Dutch League**. Ajax probably won't go undefeated, probably will give a few goals in a game or two, will give up some bad goals, will give up some goals where Dest was clearly at fault, will give up some bad goals where Dest was clearly at fault. But so what (seems to be the prevailing attitude). Dest's game is built upon quick movement and combination play going forward, which seems ideally suited to Ajax's style of play.

Then there's the Champions League. Not every group game will be a 3-0 Ajax victory, though advancement seems likely. Once we reach the KO rounds, Ajax (and Dest) will have to focus more attention on defense, but while that experience may teach Dest (what he already knows), one bad game is unlikely to make him a better defender.

Not sure what the answer is. I feel the game is learned in practice, but I'm not confident that Dest is getting the negative reinforcement he needs during Ajax practices.

    ++++++++++++

    * too busy posting, though I will make an effort to watch Ajax v Chelsea.

** first typed again on my phone as the Ditch League. Funny, but ditch in which sense?

Asking here, I thought if a player is at one club at the start of CL play then he is cap tied to that time for the current Champions league season. Is that not correct?

One of the happy surprised for Ajax (to me anyway) is their goal scoring in league and, surprisingly, CL. I think they're at almost 3 gpg league and not too far off in CL, which is pretty decent. vdBeek is playing really well (so well, it could well be his last Ajax if he keeps it up) Ziyech is playing well on the attacking side too. At the same time, the D has been pretty tight. If they keep playing like this, Dest spend 3/4 of the year in the attacking half. But at some point they're going to be under pressure to good teams (if they keep winning in Europe) and it will depend in large part to ten Hag's tactics, Veltman's support and Dest's learning curve. Dest seems pretty smart in the footie sense, but it is also clear he's got some bad defending habits that will need to be improved for him to make it to the next level.

  16. It has been changed, so you now can play for one club before winter break in the CL and for another after the break.

I think that runs the risk of hired guns for CL wins right?

I always thought it was a good rule. Keeping those who got knocked out from selling off parts to those who are still in it and have the money to spend.

From a long piece on Dest, mostly focused on his MNT choice ...

Marc Geschwind is a football analyst and Ajax expert, watching every game at senior and youth level.

"I first noticed him during the 2017-2018 UEFA Youth League, which is when I typically start to look for the next wave of Ajax youth talent," he told B/R. "He played as a full-back and as a winger, and I immediately noticed how quick and skilful he was.

"From his speed and fearlessness to his fast feet and skilful dribbling, there's a lot that stands out when you watch Dest, but if I had to pick one thing that impresses me the most, it's his combination play and overall comfort on the ball.

"It's not that rare to see a fast full-back who's a good dribbler, but it's a lot more rare to see a full-back who is so relaxed on the ball and can offer so much in possession. That's what makes him Dani Alves- or Marcelo-esque.

"The best teams in the world need full-backs confident and competent enough to find their own solutions when there seemingly are none, and that's exactly what he does."

Im not sure what his default transfermarket value is (likely 300K) but it is sure to get a huge bump I would imagine later this year.

What do you mean by "default transfermarket value"? According to Transfermarkt, his current market value as of Sept. 19 was $6.27 million.

Must have already been updated then... Once a player is promoted to senior teams, they typically get a 300k holding spot on transfermarket... They typically do their market adjustments during odd times.

Yeah that is my main concern with. I agree with all of this... there are a few things I'd add:

    * The way he defends is high risk, high reward. He presses man style which Ajax does very well and it's completely different from how the US and most teams defend.

    * He has had some horrific giveaways. If you watch highlights, lots of chances have come off of it. I think it's part of the deal with playing for Ajax: you're going to have the ball a lot and make lots of decisions. Sometimes the decisions are wrong. I wouldn't be too stressed about it. He's young and learning.

    * Combination play and runs are absolutely outstanding. He has a great understanding of spacing going forward. I do think his final passes/crosses have been fairly poor. He also takes lots of long range shots that have no chance. But he also creates lots of chances with his intelligent runs.

    * He's just 18 but he needs to get stronger. That'll come with time. I also hope he doesn't get bigger at the expense of his speed. He will probably be weak in the air (5'7) but I don't think you need to be really that tall to be a great fullback. His positioning could improve too... he gets caught up field a bit.
