Why would Almeyda praise our fans? Have you seen any footage of River Plate games? Compared to Argentina or Mexico, playing in Avaya has so little atmosphere it could be in outer space. Playing in Avaya must be an embarrassment for him and his coaches.
Yeah, in Argentina, Toledo would not have exited the stadium alive after incorrectly reversing his own PK call. Our fans should be commended for their restraint.
Reading the tea leaves (which I’m not very good at, so I could be wrong) I think Almeyda is leaving us. People say he wasn’t emotional on the sideline yesterday. Also I read his post game comments and they seemed a bit odd to me. It was mostly past tense and very little about looking forward to improving next year. He didn’t mention his 4 year plan at all which I would expect him too in this situation. The good thing about MA is that he showed this team can fight for a playoff spot with a good, fun, attacking style of play. We already knew we could fight for a playoff spot with boring defensive style of play. However it seems not practical for someone of MA’s quality to stick around here and just fight for a playoff spot. This is a guy who wins trophies. I’m sure MA has learned now that Fisher is not going to spend the money to compete with the top teams in this league. I have a feeling we will be hearing a lot about how MAs contract is structured. I don’t think the Quakes should let him go without a fight. The 3 million number that was reported was way too low. Realistically we need 10m or maybe more. That would help pay for a really good DP or a few good DPs which can soften the blow for us. 3m is just not enough.
You clearly could be correct. However, I would counter that even his coaches' alleged dissatisfaction might mostly be rooted in the fact that they had to endure the season with players they essentially inherited. I would hope that everyone waits to see if the club actually lives up to whatever promises it might have made when hiring. It's not like they coaching staff was unaware of their situation for this past season. My point is that it is not valid (IMO) for them to knowingly agree to an inferior roster for season 1 then leave at the end of that season because the roster was inferior. It is also unlikely that any of them were unaware of the league deficiencies before they arrived.
I don't think Almeyda realized how bad it would be, between the league's low estimation of our team and the budget-minded owners. Plus the staff he brought with him may have been initially thrilled with their salaries, only to realize that they couldn't really afford to live here.
My wife said yesterday that the team played like one that knows its coach is leaving. They did not play well yesterday.
We all agreed on this while watching the game. It was really the only explanation for the attitude they exuded. That, or they all drank too much at Angry Mark's favorite pub and had a massive collective hangover.
They played like the guys they have been sending to us in Reno. No much energy or concern for how the game goes.
Our fans are better than any other fans in our league, and Matias knows it. Our fans have been shafted by the league repeatedly, and Matias knows it. Go Quakes!! Go Quakesfans!! F@#$ MLS!! - Mark
I bet they were unaware of our referees deficiencies. And I'm sure that Fisher/Jesse promised that they would spend real money on players, at least at the summer xfer window. I'm willing to bet that they made other promises which they did not fullfil. Our people talk a good game, but they don't deliver. We should find out soon whether he's staying or not. My bet is that he leaves. Go Quakes!! - Mark
Look, if he were staying, someone would have issued a firm and reassuring statement by now. Best case, it's not yet a done deal and there's a tiny chance he won't leave. But I can't blame him for feeling angry/bitter about his time here, and deciding that it's best to write it off rather than throwing more time and energy at a hopeless cause.
I always thought it was strange that we didn’t hear about another Almeyda Argentine BBQ for the team. Seems like a guy like that would have done it more than once. But I would be okay for 2020 if the Quakes can hold onto Almeyda and his coaches for another year and make them happy, even if we mostly kept the same players, and just added another striker and a LB. Frankly, I’d like to see if Almeyda can keep these guys and make them even better (with the 2 additions), and go 2 rounds into the playoffs.
I think we need to replace our left back, Kashia, Vako, and Magnus. That’s four new starters. Maybe Lopez is better next year. And we need some new depth guys, maybe Cowell is one of those? Every other team in the league will try to improve also. So we need to do better than those other improvements. And somehow we need to keep Matias, which I don’t think we can. So next season will be yet another rebuilding year, and I see us losing thousands of fans. Go Quakes!! We Suck!! - Mark
I've been trying not to think about this, but checked Twitter and found this thread: Matías almeyda is leaving San Jose Earthquakes to become Monterrey new head coach expect either tomorrow or Wednesday the news and what I heard is 95 percent done— Antonio Rojas (@tony_2290) October 8, 2019 Soon enough it will all be mooth.
First two paragraphs google translated (from the article Beckham7 posted above): "Matías Almeyda met Tuesday with the players of San José Earthquakes with only one goal: to assure them that he will remain at the head of the club towards the next MLS campaign. Super Sports has confirmed the information with sources close to the coach and with two players who were in the meeting."
Hoping Wondo stays if Almeyda does. 15 frigging goals. 36 years old. I have every reason to believe he could have a 10+ goal season again next year - given the way he scores goals. Not with rookie wheels. He scores mostly by eluding defenders' attention, for a few seconds or a few steps etc. We know this from the Lenny and Gordo days. The team got better in 2019 and deployed more threats, and better possession and service this year. And Wondo didn't have to carry the team, and its morale - and our morale - so much. As a result, he got 15 goals. Imagine if Almeyda stays - and we actually get to upgrade the roster some.
Didn't Wondo release a statement either today or yesterday that he wants to play one more season.....if so I hope that means he wants one more year in SJ with Matias as coach....if Matias was leaving not sure Wondo would want to endure another season with yet another new coach
Actually we would have played Seattle and we would have gone to a pk shootout. However most of our team would have hit the crossbar. So yeah, Almeyda staying for 2020 is still better news.
"towards" the next MLS campaign? You can be headed "towards" a lot of things and still never get there.
