Im so happy this $$$$ Tour is over. I watched the first half of the first Korea game and couldnt stand it. Changed the channel. Missed the second one all together. Lets hope the new coach gets hired soon and starts a massive youth movement. We need to get younger fast and need players that are more interested in playing...EVERY game

Cutting three isn't really all that hard. In the first place, it wouldn't be all that strange if the injured list was that large by the time the roster has to be set. Second, you have two pretty obvious cuts in Long and Sonnet. I'd like to see McDonald go, but it would be easy enough to not take her.

And I don't remember-- aren't you suppose to roster two keepers and keep your third on the reserve list?

I think this depends on the goals of the USSF, Kate Markgraf, and the new coach. One approach is that the primary goal of the national team is to win World Cups, that everything is subservient to that, and that doing the necessary prep work is a four year process. Another is that the Olympics are not subservient to the World Cup. There's been debate about that here on BS.

If winning the World Cup is the supreme goal, then the process of achieving that goal begins now and the Olympics roster will be looking towards who might be on the next World Cup roster. So, one question will be whether, and which of, the older players will be potential 2023 World Cup players. And another question will be whether there are new players who are potential World Cup players and whether this is the time to start bringing them on board. The roster will be set depending on the answers to those questions.

If winning the Olympics is not subservient to that goal, then the roster will be those players who are most likely to be able to win the gold medal. This may diminish the likelihood of being able to win the 2023 World Cup[, but that's a risk you're willing to take.

In my opinion, you can have one or the other, but not both.

I'm of the school that winning the World Cup is the supreme goal. If that's the case, then the new coach right off will have some very difficult and controversial decisions to make. And, if history is any indicator, some of the longest-term players will rebel. Maybe this is an area that Kate Markgraf was brought in to attend to.

Thing is, it is not necessary or even desirable to figure who will be chosen in four years. A national team roster is something of a living document-- players in and out as they play themselves off or on. And players that will not make the final selection can make serious contributions just by being in camp; your eventual team will learn as much from training with and scrimmaging against our best as they will competing against even top teams.

So while I believe that the Olympics should be seen as the beginning of the cycle, it seems to me that you begin by looking at the existing roster to evaluate how quickly they are apt to fade, rather than looking a simple ages.

Sinclair is a shadow of her former self, but she doesn't try to do the things she once did-- just the things that help her current teammates. Marta is likewise not the player she once was-- but if you nap on her, she'll embarrass you but good.
OTOH Prinz' last appearance was embarrassing and painful, and Foudy was pretty much toast at 33.

You let 'em show you they're done; just don't talk yourself into the notion that they'll get a little extra inspiration from the WC atmosphere and turn back the clock. They've got to show you on a slow Tuesday with no one but you watching.

And above all, don't write people off just because Cannons or somebody is bored and wants new faces.

I don't think the Olympic roster will be the 19 WWC roster minus a few. There have always been new players brought onto the Olympic roster, whether we won or lost in the previous WWC and whether or not the coach sees the new cycle as starting before or after the Olympics. Players get injured, are out of shape, etc. and new players emerge, start rounding into form, etc. The least turnover the team ever had was 2011 to 2012 when Leroux was the only new player added to the Olympic roster. With a new coach, I think there could be more than one new player on the Olympic roster.

Yes, its two keepers on the Olympic roster, and there are 4 alternates, one being the third keeper.
