LOL those guys weren't available and Hazard is good, dude just came back from an injury and still hasn't settled in with his team. He basically carried Chelsea on his own for years.

Hazard is one of the best dribblers and creative players in the world, he's not a pure goal scorer but does a ton for a team while still scoring lots of goals and creating lots of chances. If Madrid can figure out how to use James/Hazard they are going to create a ton of chances for Bale/Jovic/Benzema.

IMHO the ideal lineup with the current roster would look like a 4-1-4-1 in defense and a 4-2-3-1 in attack, requiring a lot of backtracking and help from your wingers/wide mids, but I highly doubt that Zidane is going to break out of his 4-3-3 and sit either Kross or Modric (if they're available).

    ----------------Courtois
    Carvajal--Varane--Ramos--Marcelo
    -------------------------Casemiro
    ---------Kross/Modric
    Bale/Vasquez-----James/Modric/Isco---Hazard/Vinicius
    --------------Benzema/Jovic

James is removed instead of Hazard. Zidane being way too nice. Even the announcers were surprised.

Played well in a tough place to play. Created two clear chances in the 1st half and did his job defensively.

Defending the lead is more important now, and James fitness is still lacking.

He played a pretty decent game, and I'm pretty sure Zidane will have some praise for him in the post match.

James was rested midweek yet doesnt start in the derby today. Valverde gets the start in his spot.

With Modric back and Isco set to return, who knows what his playing time will look like going forward.

Could just be a tactical thing.
This is going to be a very Physical match which is not conducive to James' game. That is the way Simeone always approaches things in these match-ups.
Uruguayans are more known for these types of street fights.

    Just my two cents.

Big game comes up and he goes out of his way to drop James, color me surprised. Any excuse and Zidane takes it, his days are numbered with Isco and Madrid back for sure.

0-0 with Real taking control and on the front foot attack wise and Zidane subs Valverde for.............the just returned from injury Modric. Always the James hater.

I think this was all tactical. I think he played it safe and was hoping the influx of Modric and James later would finish Atletico off.

I'll give ZZ the benefit of the doubt here

Not even in the squad? holy ********ing lord, I was gonna post that I haven't seen him in any predicted 11's which seemed insane to me since this is a perfect match for James. At home against a team they should go out and attack the whole game and was rested on the weekend and he can't even get a look?

If this isn't injury related the message is clear, even Bale can get back in Zidane's good graces but James has no future with him as manager.

Its a precaution according to AS. If true, then that's another issue. Even though this is just a knock according to AS, way too many of these the past few years. Hopefully its not the calves yet again.

Makes sense it is injury related, would be a huge slap in the face.

I would rather it be ^^^. If he's injured or they need to take precaution for injury he's got bigger issues. At least he can try to move to another club but if it's injury than there's little hope.

Some would call this a hot take because he still is one of our most talented players but it is difficult for me to argue against your sentiment.

Especially with the Muriel----Duvan----Roger formation looking so good at times against Brasil it makes it easier for me to say just forget about James and have those guys get more chemistry.

On the flip side we only have 4 more friendlies to experiment with the tactics and then the really meaningful matches start up in March. Having all your players training together before the lights go on is ideal so it is a tough decision.
