No, it doesn't, but can he - and most importantly, we - do better?

Yeah, that's keeping the door open is the most minimal way possible. Of course, he's not going to come out and say, "Hell no to coming back here for another season! Have you seen the idiots trying to play defense in front of me?"

If he keeps up this level of play, I do wonder about some of the bigger Bundesliga clubs going in for him. I know someone else mentioned this a page or two back, but would Dortmund see him as an upgrade to Burki? I feel like Bayern and Leipzig are pretty well set in goal, but Burki has always struck me as rather inconsistent--some brilliant saves mixed in with some howlers.

I also remember watching Schalke a couple weeks ago and hearing the announcers say that Bayern was eyeing their starting GK, Nubel, who's 22 and seen as a future German international. Steffen might work as a replacement there. It's hard to judge Schalke, as they're so up and down from year to year, but they should be better than Duesseldorf?

I just heard the same thing this AM on Sirius XM FC related to Nubel heading to Bayern next season. I think Schalke would be a good step up for him. I think last year was an anomaly and I expect them to challenge for a top 6 spot this season. But if Zack keeps standing on his head like this he may be destined for something even bigger. I would really like to see him in the EPL.

Steffen just saved a (pretty poorly taken) Freiburg PK to preserve a 1-1 score about an hour into this one.

Saved a penalty, although it was a pretty weak shot.

With steffen's form it takes a special goal to beat him and what an unbeliveable strike from Frieburg to put them up 2-1 in the 80th minute.

Freiburg scores a golazo from outside the box. Not much Steffen could have done.

team of the week again in store?

I mean I dont see any other goalie pulling stuff out like he does for what seems to be a terrible Dusseldorf team.

Positive for him is Guzan went to crap once he hit 30/31. Steffen's only 24. Not to mention Bundesliga fans seem more sane than their counterparts in the PL who go to shreds over the tiniest things.

I'd like to see a goal (or two) like this called back, every so often, to keep the offside in check. Might not call this particular one back - the ref here would have to be pretty ballsy, after that shot - but I don't like to see strikers who are many yards offside flash in front of the Gk's view. And yes, I can see that Steffen is not shielded/obstructed, but he might have been distracted at the critical moment of truth (when the ball was struck).

I wonder if Man City will cash-in on Steffen next summer. I don't think he could / would challenge Ederson. Ederson has the edge due to his distribution and let's be honest, he's the most expensive GK in the world. He's not going to the beach. So i could see Steffen being flipped especially with his current form. It wouldn't be a bad piece of business for all parties.

Steffen's success will help others in the pipeline. I'm hoping a guy like Gonzalez might be able to make the leap abroad within the next year.
