awesome news! stoked SD will finally get an outdoor pro soccer team again. Best thing about it, decent people behind it with Landon Donovan and the USL Sacramento start up guy.
from Brian Strauss @ SI also in Orlando for meetings and the (MLS All Stars) game itself were representatives from Indy Eleven, North Carolina FC (Raleigh), Phoenix Rising, Las Vegas and San Diego (Nick Stone, the point man for the SoccerCity bid).
Starting to wonder if Donovan’s group won’t make a play for MLS. They’ve supposedly had discussions with SDSU about using the new Aztecs Stadium in the future which is being designed with soccer very much in mind (it’ll have safe standing terraces on one end line for one thing). And the USL side has moved up opening day to 2020 from the expected 2021. Throw in that they appear to have a big new primary owner/investor coming in... They’re starting to feel like they’re replicating Sacramento’s path to MLS.
That would be awesome. Perhaps they will make a play towards MLS when they are ready to add clubs 31 and 32. Any idea what the major announcement is for tonight..
Tonight is announcing the start date no doubt, season ticket sign ups, Donovan as GM and I believe the name.
2020 start date, season tickets on sale, Donovan GM, Torero confirmed home. Name coming November. Got a sweet scarf signed by Donovan, shirt and free beer.
So here’s a question. Who are you all supporting right now that SD has two teams. USL San Diego? 1904 FC? Both? Someone else?
USL San Diego. They seem to build a professional organisation with Smith, Campos, Donovan and Co, as well as reaching out to the broader San Diego community on an off the field. 1904 was never even in contention for me as there were other USL and MLS rumors/bids happening at that time and they were NASL affliated at the beginning.
Neither....I have no time to go to games. I do "support" both as I think there is enough room for both especially since they are in different divisions. USL will get a local TV deal though but it will be tough for Fox Sports SD to do it as they have the Padres from March-Sept (although the soccer matches could be played early on saturdays and later on sundays). I have a feeling 1904 will get a local TV deal as well with KUSI.....not really sure why but I get that feeling
So just a reminder for those who’ve forgotten or have never seen it, this will be the USL SD team’s home Torero Stadium. And this is similar to what they’re hoping to do with adding additional seats such as those on the left end line which normally aren’t there.
Will support both, but have a better feeling about the USL bid. Stabler league and people with more experience, so getting season tickets for them but will go to the odd 1904 game. Went to the first one and was fun but a bit of a cluster and felt thrown together. Not sure how realistic it is to play in SDCCU with 3,000 fans.
Yeah kinda my feeling as well. I just didn’t have a good experience at the 1904 game as they are not family friendly (which is a must these days for me). And I frankly hate the name. On the other hand I really like what I’ve seen from the USL side, and put a deposit down on season tickets already. That and frankly I see them as our last best shot at an eventual MLS bid.
I support SDSU women's soccer mainly. I haven't ben to 1904 yet. Not sure I will. The league just seems weird. Not sure why. I also watch a fair amount on TV and follow through Twitter. Radio as well. Listening to Sounders right now, which is my MLS team (well, not mine). I'll watch any of it casually. I grew up here watching indoor. That was the 1980's. I'd love it to be the 1980's again. Seen some Sockers games on Fox 5.
They should probably move to Southwestern as that would hold 7k easily and that is where most of their support seems to reside
