And when the league bought out Chivas Anshutz could have asked for his territory back if he was concerned about the competition.

He couldn't just ask politely. He would have needed to pay a lot of money to convince the rest of the MLS owners not to take the $110 million from the LAFC group.

I agree. I think Anshutz did whatever he wanted in 2004 & 2005 when he owned half of the league as we Quakes fans can attest to.

As of 2014 however, I don't think he had as much power among other owners. I'm sure he was still a pretty powerful figure at that point but other deep pocketed owners will have spoken up had he been out of line.

Yet John Fisher can somehow roadblock $200million to the other MLS owners???

The good years was when they had Hugo Sanchez. They also played at The Murph, the Chargers/Padres multi-use stadium which sucked.

I think this is the new proposal; sharing a $250M stadium with SDSU football.[IMG]

It will be tough to sell that to the MLS.

Yeah Hugo Sanchez and Leo Cuellar. Still Ron Newman had great teams just not great attendance.

I'd love to see a new SD Sockers in MLS. I'm sure whomever comes in can afford to buy the name and logo....

It’s a shame frankly. Sharing that stadium, which is right sized for both MLS and SDSU makes more sense than building two underused stadiums.

How so? Because it doesn’t have a roof? Who needs a roof in San Diego?

I seem to recall reading somewhere recently that MLS is requiring a roof over nearly all of the seating in new stadiums.

Why? A roof is not required where the weather doesn’t call for it. When it’s 72 and sunny most of the year what’s the point?

I seem to recall MLS also requiring new teams entering the league to have stadiums of their own. We know how well they followed through with that one.

OTOH I read that the reason Detroit was rejected as an MLS franchise was because the NFL stadium they wanted to use is completely enclosed.

The queso is not as good in Detroit. At least that's the word on the street in the Big Apple, where these decisions are made.

Apparently the Quakes (specifically their homegrown territorial rights) are the hold up... crazy that this issue still hasn’t been settled after ~3 years.

Even if Nagle had reached an agreement on this it doesn't mean that Burkle can't try to get a better deal. Everything's negotiable.

SJE makes three parties in this negotiation. I assume that makes it a little tougher to resolve.

I’ve been saying for years that the territorial rights would be an issue with Sac. SJ got rights to NorCal when they rejoined the league and given the ownership group’s history in another sport with territorial rights and giving them up biting a franchise in the ass was bound to be a problem. The Quakes are going to want to be well compensated for surrendering rights they’ve no obligation I’m aware of to give up.

That said I’d hate if the Quakes rights ultimately are what kept Sac out of the league as they’ve not made much use of those rights over the last decade.

Quakes wouldn't have Tommy Thompson without the territorial rights, right?

Tommy was from outside the Quakes' homegrown territory, so technically any MLS team could have invited him to its academy. He would have been in Sacramento territory if a team existed at the time, though.

I'd guess the dispute, if any, regards how to treat the Stockton/Tracy/Modesto/Turlock area. It's within the Quakes' old 75-mile radius, but most of it is closer to Sacramento and is in the Sacramento TV market. The Quakes have Fuentes and Cowell from that area.

As a native of one of those cities mentioned, my feeling is that they would probably fit better into Sacramento's territory. As you mentioned, they're in Sacramento's media market (more or less), they all reside in the same relative area compared to San Jose, and this might just be me, but I always felt more culturally close to Sacramento compared to the Bay Area (although that's largely due to relative recent shifts in focus, as San Jose obviously has an agricultural history that aligns quite well with much of the San Joaquin Valley).

However, it certainly isn't as if there are no Quakes fans out there, and San Jose won't want to be officially cut off from them as far as the league is concerned (even if they currently do basically nothing to court those fans). But ultimately, it's going to come down to how much the ransom is for those rights, and whether or not Sacramento's owners can or are willing to afford it.
