Go for it. I'll bring the Betsy Ross flag, if I can find one. (EDIT: on second thought, since we're playing Philadelphia, that might get misconstrued as support for the opposition.)
Well, since Fox News reported it, I don’t really believe that Colin Kapernick finds the Betsy Ross flag insulting. If it is true, then I don’t know what to say, it makes no sense to me. But I agree, bringing Betsy Ross would confuse a lot of people about if you’re rooting for Philly vs Quakes.
Here's the Washington Post story: Nike decided to shelve plans for a shoe featuring the 13-star American flag associated with Betsy Ross after a complaint by Colin Kaepernick, according to a report Monday. The shoe was set to go on sale this week in connection with Independence Day celebrations. Citing sources familiar with the matter, the Wall Street Journal reported that Kaepernick contacted Nike officials and told them that he and others are offended by the flag because it dates to the late 18th century, a period of widespread slavery in the United States. . . . https://www.washingtonpost.com/spor...tedly-pulls-shoe-with-betsy-ross-flag-design/
I support Kaepernick in his issues with the NFL, but, the Betsy Ross flag beef is just f**king ridiculous.
How ironic considering that the Portland Antifas have no idea what true fascism is and in fact use the same tactics as the Nazi Brownshirts to shut down any opposition.
Betsy Ross was a Quaker, a group that opposed slavery since the 17th Century, so Kaepernick's comments show a rather profound lack of historical knowledge. To allow this symbol to be hijacked by one side or the other (which Kaep is effectively doing by raising these objections) plays into the fracturing of our society.
Has this thread ever been used for its original purpose? It seems quaint now that it used to just be filled with news and trivia about teams and players that have nothing whatsoever to do with MLS.
What are you talking about? Betsy Ross and Colin Kaepernick? Let me remind you of the context: RSL fans were reportedly harassed by stadium security for bringing a version of the American flag into the stadium with them because security deemed it "political." The likely reason for that is Colin Kaepernick's recent public claim the flag is racist and because MLS has a no politics policy for its fans. MLS' no politics policy was the subject of a Jeff Carlisle column on ESPN as recently as yesterday. The subject may be unappealing, but we're not "hijacking this thread" (to use another poster's quaint characterization) by talking about it in the fullness of its manifestations, since RSL is another MLS team, after all.
And, by the way, Crew fans are currently discussing this same subject on their "Other Teams Thread." Imagine that?
I know the context, and I'm not throwing stones here. I've taken threads off topic. Nor am I against political discussion as it relates to MLS stuff. I just find it funny that this is labeled very specifically as a results thread (even has the R in the title!) and yet almost none of the discussion is about results. Maybe we should rename this thing to a more general "MLS Happenings" or something as we seem to be in more need of that than we do a thread dedicated to the results of other games.
I've met the Cider Riot owner, years ago. He may be misguided but he's no terrorist. https://www.oregonlive.com/news/201...ers-fans-banned-for-waving-antifa-symbol.html
Excellent that Colorado takes back what the Galaxy gave away. We are in crunch mode, every result it huge. As nice as "making the playoffs" would be, to dream of the final four we'd better nab 2nd.
Seattle was missing 10 players (international duty), including their top three goal-scorers Raul Ruidiaz, Jordan Morris and Cristian Roldan. KC up 1-0 at 65 minutes in Portland, Benny Feilhaber goal. Portland subs in Brian Fernanez at 70th minute.
Shocker! Portland looked to be in cruise control having played all their road games early on, but they are blowing it.
1-1 at minute 83... *sigh*... ...and Fernandez scores in the 94th minutes for Portland to make it 2-1 Portland.
