He’s amongst the very best at his age at this position so hopefully he won’t be filling holes for much longer, can’t afford to lose a prospect like that because his coach thinks he’s a Swiss knife.

    Still on sideback ?
    It gets concerning.

Looks like he play only as a CB. Last game he was played in the center in a 3 CB Formation and this time again in a 4th Defense as a CB.

    Maybe off-side.
Anyway is he one of the CBs that move forward on any given (close) fk? Or was he there casually?

Starts in Cup game, not sure if as a sideback or 3 man defense.

Some interesting context around Tomiyasu's role as a right back at Bologna, featuring quotes from Bologna tactical analyst Renato Baldi, who has followed Mihajlovic from Sampdoria to Milan and Torino previously, and whose interview columns in popular Japanese football magazine Footballista were adapted into an excellent book summarizing modern tactical trends in Europe.

The interviewer/translator states that Tomiyasu is to play as a normal wide right back in a four-defender setup, but will transform into a right-sided center back when Bologna has the ball and shifts into a three-defender formation, not only building up from the back but occasionally advancing and tucking inside into the right half-space of midfield to help stop opposing counterattacks, much as Guardiola's fullbacks at Man City do.

Baldi comments that Tomiyasu is the fastest defender at Bologna and possesses elite stamina as well as other top-class physical attributes, along with the skill and audacity to play line-breaking forward passes with both feet. In order to maximize his talents, Bologna decided to essentially assign him three distinct positions, shifting fluidly between fullback, center back, and defensive midfielder ("false fullback") in the run of play.

Interesting interview which actually doesn't really back up with what I've seen in the first game highlights, but I'll check tonight.
What I mean is that, during the Pisa game, it looked like he actually had to remain wide and run up and cross several time, while my understanding is that the interview suggests that he should go into more central positions. I'm confused, but curious to see how this develops.

This part made me smile (in a good way) btw

Maybe Bologna hasn’t incorporated all this positional fanciness, at least not for a Coppa match against a Serie B side. Obviously a lot going on with Mihajlovic receiving leukemia treatment and everything.

The whole idea does seem plausible with Baldi supposedly having been inspired by watching Guardiola’s teams to quit his career as a tax accountant to dive into football tactics full time. And it would be pretty strange to splash cash on a top international CB prospect to turn him into a conventional fullback.

Anyway, some food for thought as the season opens today.

I can only find this highlight, but from what I watched, he was right:

Tomiyasu clearly defended the right side but when he pushed forward, he didn't hug the line but occupied the 1/3 middle right
Also at 1:15, no normal RB would position like that. He played a mixture of RB/RCB for me.

This is from a different game but yeah, I mean if one guy from the club says it, obviously that's their goal!

Tomiyasu will play in my city tonight.
It' will be a tough match since Hellas was kicked out from Coppa Italia as the only Serie A team to lost the pass to the next stage and they will play with blood in the eyes.
Very interesting first reality check for him.

So he's gonna do Philipp Lahm. That's a mountain challange for him.

I'm not regularly watch Bologna, how is usually Mihajlovic set them-up?

Nice first half against 10men team.
Now if Bologna will feck up all losing it will ruin his good debut.

1-1 he was good but against 10men Hellas is the easiest challenge.
    Anyway good impression by him.

Very good game by Tomiyasu, unfortunately his team lacked efficiency in the final third which resulted in a disappointing 1-1 draw against 10-men Verona.

Bologna have the potential to do well this season, a mid-table finish will be the most they can achieve, but they have to score goals and win games like tonight’s game.

Tomiyasu led all players with 11.02km covered, and led Bologna as well in touches and passes.
