A little off topic here, but relevant to the mention of Hawaii. My brother is the new SRA in Hawaii. I'm trying to get him to develop a referee exchange program so that I can go and visit.
I'm a little concerned about this. I've always been told that the coaches are not allowed on the field. And what about the red-carded player that you have left on the bench, unsupervised, because the coaches are on the field with all the other players.
Coaches are allowed in the center circle during KFTPM in our state. YMMV. Any red carded player on the bench is still in plain sight. What are you concerned about him doing?
That is actually incorrect. The coach can have a kid come out of the stands and take a kick and then add them to the roster later. In my state, you can even add a player to the roster AFTER the game is over! In NY, your format would not work because for KFTPM coaches need to give the refs the order in which the players are going to kick.
But they have to be on the roster to be selected, even if they were just written on the roster two seconds ago. I warn our referees about this possibility, but nobody has ever reported that it happened. Our state has a roster limit for the playoffs, so it may not be possible to add someone if that would take the roster above the limit. There is no provision for removing someone from the roster to make room for someone else. We're not in a New York state of mind, so we're in agreement with IFAB that coaches don't have to give the referee a list in advance. I'm reminded of the famous Brandi Chastain penalty kick at the World Cup final. The back story is that she was not among the first five on the coach's list for penalties. Then one of the five, Michelle Akers, who had been on his list, was dehydrated and was on IV fluids. Obviously, not in a condition to take a kick. So the coach goes to Brandi and says, "Are you ready to take a kick, don't answer yet, are you ready to take a kick against the same Chinese keeper that saved your PK earlier this year, don't answer yet, are you ready to take a kick against the Chinese keeper who saved your PK earlier this year and take it left footed?" She had never taken a PK before left footed. She said yes, of course, and the rest is history.
We've written about this before, and it wasn't at a game that I officiated at. The school that I teach at lost a game because a player not on the roster scored a goal in overtime. When the school went to protest, they were told that a player can be added to the roster at anytime including after the game is complete so the lost stood.
3.1.3 Situation A. "A player who is not listed on the roster scores a goal. The goal is allowed. RULING: Legal. Since players may be added to the roster after the start of play, a goal by a player who is not on the roster should be allowed and the player's name and number should be added to the roster." page 15, 2019-20 NFHS rule book.
Just got an email to tell us that the conference we work will be going to yellow card accumulation this year. More than 4 and you sit one. 6th you sit again. Anybody do this?
In Texas we have an accumulation system. One point per YC, 5 for a RC with a max of 5 a match. At 5 points you sit a match, 10 you sit 2, 15 sit 3 and so on. It’s 100% on the coaches to track and monitor this. Not in our lane at all.
In New York, we have a yellow card accumulation system. Five yellows by any player or coach is equal to a one game suspension. I think it is three yellows in the playoffs. However, the system is entirely self policed by the schools themselves. Red cards are a different story. We referees report them to the section (the local regional area).
the only YC accumulation we have in WI is team YC's. I think I talked about this before. I think the accumulation is 24 YC for a team and they are disqualified from playoff contention. Only had it happen to one team that I am aware since the inception. That was a BAAAD team...
