Really rose to the occasion, as we had seen him do before, improving his focus as the stakes get bigger, but today for the first time in a top 4 league.
Excellent shot stopping. Next up will be his 1 v 1 stops against better teams and his quick distribution to set up the break.
I hope that posters will see fit to do a Yanks Abroad Gameday thread for Mr. Steffen (and Mr. Morales) in future games.
1162747589458087938 is not a valid tweet id Kinda reminds me of a half speed version of Bank's save on Pele's header in that '70 WC. Not close to as brilliant, but oddly similar in technique, even the same hand.
step one: have the veteran german keeper pick up an injury step two: play like he did today stick to the plan, steff
Still, no matter how good Steffen is, once Rensing is back, he'll be given a chance to regain the starting spot --local man privilege.
well Rensing is the no.1 and a known quantity. I'm sure Steffen will be given a fair shot though to compete with him.
Helps that Rensing is old and missed basically the entire 2017-18 season because of injury, too. Is there a timeline on his return? Transfermarkt's "Acromioclavicular Separation" sounds brutal.
He and Fortuna were a notch up the second half. They almost looked like they were in the game. Very strong debut for Steff.
Zack is getting showered with praise from teammates and even the opposition for his performance today. "We could have even made one goal or the other, but we also have to thank Zack (Steffen), who made an outstanding game." said attacker Erik Thommy "He has done a great job in the box." Ayhan joined in this praise. "Zack has an outstanding physique," said the Turkish international. "If he comes out, you'll double-check it as a center-back, if you can jump in too. In addition, you have seen in two or three actions that he is not a blind man on the line. " We played against a fantastic goalkeeper," said the Bremen coach Florian Kohfeldt appreciatively. Even Funkel [F95 manager], to whom singular praise is otherwise an abomination, did not want to stand this time. "I am glad that our sports director Lutz Pfannenstiel was so persistent and has brought this keeper to us," commented the 65-year-old. https://rp-online.de/sport/fussball...sse-rueckhalt-beim-3-1-in-bremen_aid-45144037 https://rp-online.de/sport/fussball...ck-steffen-nach-sieg-in-bremen_bid-45144937#3
The one thing Europeans, and in particular the English, agree, is that Americans produce good keepers. It's almost a mantra in soccer debates: "Yanks can't play footie." "Yeah, but they have solid keepers." "True." So if guys like Horvath or Steffen show well in the continent, I expect them to get attention from EPL clubs.
It's been one of the weirder things about the dry spell between Howard's emergence in 2003, and then nobody emerging anywhere close to his level until Steffen first in '15, then again in '17-'18. It's bizarre that our developmental dive for prospects in that 1990-1995 era also involved keepers. Of course Johnson, and Hamid are could've been's, but it never quite happened for them. It also helped that this game illustrated Steffen's greatest strength: shot stopping (which for me, remains 1000x more important than distribution, in a game where the opportunities to actually score, are rare, having a goalie singularly gifted in knocking such chances aside is invaluable).
ehhh, depends on how well Steffen plays. It's a goalie. You don't replace what's working. even if he's a loanee. If Steffen is playing well and clearly keeping Fortuna in the Bundesliga... you don't mess with that. If he creates doubt, then yes you give Rensing an opportunity to win back the spot.
Whether he does or not, game pbp doesn't belong here. Someone shouldn't have to start a pbp thread to not read it where it doesn't belong. Someone who wants to post pbp should post it in an existing pbp thread or start one.
