So yesterday morning, spots 2-8 in the Western Conference looked like this: SEA MIN SJE LAG RSL FCD POR This morning, it looks like this: MIN LAG RSL SEA SJE POR FCD This is going to be a knife fight to get rid of one team.
The cover of Mexican paper Cancha this morning:“FIRST LOSER! América is the first Mexican team to lose a final against an MLS club.” pic.twitter.com/tmTKBhxThX— MLS Buzz (@MLS_Buzz) August 15, 2019 Pot stirred.
And wait until it sinks in that because of the single elimination format seeds 5-7 only have an asterisks chance of winning the Cup. (You'd have to win 4 consecutive road games against teams that were better than you over the year. It's not going to happen very often.)
Better yet... wait until the first time a #7 upsets a #2 in the opening game. "Sporting Merit!! Regular Season!! Longer Sample Size!!"
First one with A team vs A team. They can pardon away all of the others, but the proof of the meaningfulness of this match even to the Mexicans was Miguel Herrera throwing conniption fits on the sidelines. It was almost as beautiful as the match itself. Frankly, América was lucky to not have lost that one by two or three goals. On a side note, I hope Josef Martinez is over the silly trickery on PKs. His caliber of player shouldn’t need s trick shot on a PK anyhow. Also, is it just me or does Pity Martinez seem to get indecisive too often in clutch situations?
Have you analyzed Toluca's CONCACAF Champions Cup final lineup from 1998 to determine it wasn't an "A" team?
Seriously? That’s your excuse for Club América losing this match? I would agree that the final should not always be held in an MLS stadiums. But that fact is not a legit excuse for any single game. Back in the Super Liga days this argument was fair because the entire tournament was always held in MLS stadiums. But your argument in this context only sustains scrutiny if we are looking at long term trends. Your argument no more discredits Atlanta United’s victory in the Campeones Cup than to argue the same thing about an MLS Cup winning home side. Some times your team is not going to be the home team. Champions win on the road too.
He is one of the best players to ever play in MLS...period, but his silly hop skip and jump PK's are ridiculous. His second PK was class. What is he thinking with that other weak ass PK? Before he took the first one I told my wife, "If he does that hop skip and jump, no chance he makes it." She looked at me like I was a prophet afterwards.
I watched the Campeones Cup game last night and in about the 70th minute ATL had a free kick from about 25 yards. I missed the full discussion from Twellman and whatshisname, but Twellman mentioned something about some new law of the game. An America defender headed the shot off the goal line, and Twellman said that under the old laws of the game that would have been a goal. He also mentioned something to do with the 2-man wall (and 5 goalkeepers). What the hell is the new law he's referring to?
I don't understand what you're trying to say. But thanks for the response! I'm sure some baseball fans on here will find it funny! In all seriousness, any idea what new law of the game Twellman was talking about? Did they change the number of players allowed in a wall on free kicks from a certain distance or something?
You act like TT knows what he is talking about. In the new laws you can't have an offensive player within 1 meter of the defensive wall. All the changes start on page 149 of this: http://static-3eb8.kxcdn.com/documents/793/103202_200519_LotG_201920_EN_SinglePage.pdf
Oh, I know that Twellman usually talks out of his ass emphatically to try to show that he's knowledgeable. In fact, I debated including such a line in my original post, and decided it was unnessesary. That's why I'm asking--also because I thought I'd mostly understood the new changes previously.
I've read it now--so there's f*ck all about how many players can be in a wall, which seemed to be Twellman's point (relating to why America had "5 goalkeepers").
I've still not really heard the rationale for this rule change, or figured out the benefit. Is it just to reduce the amount of jostling for position that forces the referee to hold up play?
