BREAKING: MLS plans to announce St. Louis as an expansion team winner next week. Plans being made for Tuesday. News up at @stltoday: https://t.co/VL6pXpfrQN #MLS #MLS4THELOU— Ben Frederickson (@Ben_Fred) August 14, 2019
Happy for St. Louis but f*** me Garber deserves a royal beating for stringing Sacramento along. We've officially reached the "cruel and unusual" stage.
There have been a number of "one-way" rivalries throughout MLS history. For example, Crew fans really hated DC with a passion for a long, long time, but I don't think we were even on the radar for them.
I remember it being a surprise to many of us reading posts that that was a thing years ago. I thought it was a joke. It's still not a rivalry to DC nor is there reason for DC to believe it is (fans or players).
I'm not surprised. Our hatred of DC stems back to the earliest days of the league, when they were the one hurdle Columbus couldn't get over. To THEM, we were just another team whose ass they kicked, because they were that good.
Hmmm...Sounds a lot like Philadelphia and DCU & RBNY..... Oh and Orlando for that matter with NYCFC and Atlanta.
I mean a lot of those SOBs were in the stands at RFK. Many of the current SOBs are just SOBs, but I still struggle to think of them as anything other than a little brother or something.
Hey, if they blow up that warehouse clogging up downtown and build the soccer venue there, nobody will complain.
Less than a third of the non-senile population of Saint Louis as an adult memory of the 1985 World Series. Trust me, I'm a Missourian. They've gotten over it.
No, but generally people don't really lock on stuff until they're at least 12-15 years-old, though BigSoccer style sports fans tend to be younger (I fit that profile). If you were 12 in 1985, you'd be 46 today. 39% of the U.S. population was 45+ in the 2010 Census. 1 in 7 people move every year in the U.S., though most moves are in the same MSA. Though over 34 years there has been a lot of 1985 Saint Louisans that have moved away and been replaced by others. Yourself possibly And, shocking to most rabid sports fans, there's also a sizeable set of the population that doesn't really care about sports in general, much less the Cardinals specifically. Fact is, while people like you and I remember it clearly, even many of those that do the same have stopped caring. How many of the original Casbah members still attend or follow the Earthquakes? I know a lot of original MLS supporter group members and leaders, and many pre-MLS Sam's Army folks. Many of them are still going strong today, but they're the exception. Many others have disappeared as their lives and focus have changed. 34 years is a long time in sports. I'm sure you'll find a fair amount of lip service to the Denkinger thing, but I also suspect most people don't really care. The Cubs/Cardinals and Blues/Blackhawks are ongoing rivalries and the Rams/Bears is still relatively recent enough. The Chiefs and Rams rarely played anything meaningful and the while the annual Royals/Cardinals series is nice enough, it isn't really a rivalry.
