There was a time I was certain I'd end up living in retired hippy town. Then life got in the way of my plans.

I was watching that game last night, and when Diego Valeri scored his goal, I just about woke up the neighbors. I was as surprised as the defender.

This would immediately put it on the short list for USMNT WCQ in 2021. It’s the only thing it was missing

Especially the Sounders, the Gals, and LAFU.
They’re kind of my Western Conference team.

I hadn’t heard of the grass field.
    Excellent if true.

The USMNT played a WCQ there in ‘97 against Costa Rica. Tab Ramos scored in a 1-0 win.

The problem with Portland (and any west coast city for that matter) hosting a WCQ is the distance and the time zone changes, especially for players coming over from Europe. It has been done and can be done, but the extra travel is tougher for those players. Those cities are better suited for Gold Cup matches.

    Arms race in LA.

LAFC has reportedly signed their 3rd DP, 19 year old Uruguayan winger Brian Rodriguez from Penarol for $11.5 million.

The Gals meanwhile are coming home with 23 year old Boca Jr's forward Christian Pavon for a whopping $18 million, which would be an MLS record.

Meanwhile we make 1-2 M signings at best . You want to be the best you got to pay like them.

To despise LA sports teams is to be Midwestern, born and raised.

Ok Basketball is the only exception for me . I have no favorite team because I like Columbus and Cincinnati teams and dislike all professional Cleveland teams.

I’m Also a Lebron fan and growing up in 80s was a Magic Johnson fan.

My dream is for Columbus to get a NBA team which Mayor Coleman wanted but I’m thinking it’s not even being pursued .

So maybe Cincinnati will get a new NBA team . I think the Royals were Maybe ABA and before my time

    Well, so far.

I think we all assume - with good reason - that new ownership will spend a lot more than that. I doubt that Bez left his gig in Toronto because he was thrilled at the opportunity to acquire players on a shoestring budget.

Will we drop LAFC/Gals/ATL money on DP signings? I very much doubt it. But not all of their big names have cost $10+M in fees to get. Vela, I believe, was under $6M. $3M, $4M, $5M... we'll see pretty soon just how far new ownership wants to go to acquire players. I have to imagine whoever is brought into to be our next Schelotto/Higuain at CAM will easily be the most expensive player acquisition in team history.

Royals were NBA--became, eventually, the Sacramento Kings. One of the most moved franchises in pro sports having also been in Rochester, Kansas City, and Omaha.

There's no way Cincinnati gets an NBA team unless the Bengals eventually decide to leave town (which is definitely a possibility). As long as Cincinnati has the Reds, Bengals, FCC, UC basketball/football, and Xavier basketball, there is no way an NBA team is getting added to the mix. The metro just isn't large enough.

I think Columbus getting an NBA team is more likely than Cincinnati, but still not very likely. Given the current rate of population growth, the existence of an NBA quality arena, and the slightly smaller amount of competition, it seems that Columbus would have a better chance.

Jerry Lucas was drafted by The Cincinnati Royals but refused to play for them and played for the Cleveland team which was
ABA. The following season he played for the Cincinnati Royals. Being from Middletown and my wife graduating from Middletown High we attended Middletown High basketball games for forty some years. In the seventies we decided we would attend a Cincinnati Royals game. It was the most boring sporting event we ever saw. The players, either team, acted like they weren't interested until the final quarter of the game when they started to put some effort into their play! We didn't go again! The forties, fifties and sixties were big for basketball in Middletown. With seven state championship and and 76 straight wins over the 56,57and 1958! The Greater Ohio Leaque had some of the best teams in the state. The regional finals one year in the 70's had four GOL teams in the final four! Today not so much!

    For the record:

The Cincinnati Royals were, in fact, an NBA team. They were originally the Rochester Royals.

They failed in Cincy too, and moved the Kansas City where they changed their name to the Kings. A few years later they moved to Sacramento, where they are today.

Growing up in Rochester there was a summer basketball camp run by Al Cervi. He had apparently been a big Royals star. The Royals were long gone, no one at the camp had even been alive when the Royals were in town, most of us had never heard of the Royals and none of us had the first clue who Al Cervi was.

But our parents, the people who wrote the checks, remembered Good Old Al and the camp went on for years and years.

By the same token, Carlos Meditieri of the old NASL Rochester Lancers still runs a soccer camp and I'm sure those kids wonder who this old fart is too.

My guess is we will see the Modell Law brought up if the Bengals tried to leave.

Scene: After Lebron made his announcement to go to the Lakers.

My much better half: Well I guess I will watching the Lakers this year.

Me: I am not watching the ******** Lakers.

End Scene. NBA season: No one watched the Lakers. But Tim always keeps tabs on what Lebron is up to and what people are saying about him.

Common conversations around our house: Do you think Lebron's legacy has been tarnished a bit?

Me: It is what it is. He is/was/will be one of the greatest players to ever play the game. He is a kid from Akron who gives back to this community. I will always think more good of him than bad.

But I will not be watching and cheering for the Lakers. LA sports teams need another piece of hardware as much as I need a hole in my head.

    Jerry Lucas story:

He was a 3 time Ohio Basketball PotY or something in high school and OSU wanted him bad. In those days they'd sometimes take prize recruits out to John Galbraith's horse farm on the far west side for some entertaining and dazzlement. That place was something else. All those miles of white fence.

Anyway, Lucas gets a tour with someone and when he comes back to the house he asks about the large stream which flowed through the place. Probably has a name. They told him it was a great place to fish and gave him a pole.

He came back a couple hours later and told John Galbraith that if he could fish in that stream any time he wanted to, he would sign with Ohio State. Which is what happened.

Old timers out that way used to talk about seeing Lucas and his girlfriend out sitting by that stream fishing a couple times a week for years.

Simpler times. Now you gotta buy him a Beemer.

I would imagine so, but I wonder if there will be a capable and willing buyer. It will be a bit more difficult to find someone to buy an NFL team.

Adolf Rupp the head coach at University of Kentucky came to Middletown High School in 1958 to try and recruit Lucas. Lucas had made it known that no college coach was to come to the high school while he was in class to try and recruit him. Rupp knocked on the door and when the teacher opened the door asked to see Lucas. Lucas stepped outside the classroom and told Rupp that he had made it clear he would not talk to coaches while he was in class. Because Rupp had interrupted his class he would definitely not be going to UK! Another story I heard was Lucas when he started class at OSU was told by a professor that he would get no special treatment because he was an athlete. Lucas explained that he was not at the Ohio State University on an athletic scholarship,he was there on an academic scholarship!

Middletown High at the time was a three year school,10th thru 12th,The guy who broke the high school scoring record that Lucas achieved in three years took that guy four years to break! I think the fellow may be Luke Kinnard from Franklin,Ohio which boarders Middletown!

There was a park in Middletown that drew in fans and basketball players from the region. Rupp, the UK coach used to bring players from UK to play. One player from University of Dayton was guarding Lucas. Lucas was impressing the college player. The player asked Lucas what year in College he was? Lucas replied that he would be a sophomore in high school.

Middletown High also had Butch Carter who played for Indiana and professional plus his brother Chris who played for the Buckeyes football and professional. Jimmy Ratliff played for OSU basketball. A number of other players played for smaller schools such as UC,Ohio University,Miami and Wright State
