Le Tiss is in my top ten of favourites he was a magician. He was lined up to join ManU in a world record transfer but decided to stay with his boyhood club Southampton... He was criticised by some saying he needed to be the ‘big fish in a little pond’
ZIco came out of retirement, signed for Barcelona and changed his name He is currently known as Messi Seriously has there ever been a player who was a mirror image of another We're not talking about small similarities either Messi in his current version is a carbon copy of ZIco In his younger dribbling wizard version he was a hybrid between prime Baggio at times and at other times he looked like prime Tostao (With superior agility and athleticism which made him a freak)
Yeah, that's a nice one certainly. One candidate for best ever goal by him (and appropriate for this thread also, especially due to being scored with his left) was actually not allowed - vs Argentinos Juniors in the 1985 Intercontinental Cup:
I see what you're saying with the technical difficulty of the left shot. Still that previous strike for Nancy was actually great by any standards That was a 98-99 (pes stats) dribbling accuracy Pure close control technique with the ball not leaving his foot at any moment He beat 3 players with 3 touches of the ball
I think the rhythm and disguise in his movements was good too. Maybe this would be my choice for his best goal if trying to choose one, but not sure:
A top 10 best technique: 1. Maradona 2. Zidane 3. Bergkamp 4. Ronaldinho 5. Magico Gonzalez 6. Baggio 7. Cassano 8. Stojkovic 9. Messi 10. Isco
Not comfortable looking at any list with Zidane so close to Maradona Feel even less comfortable with isco next to Lionel Messi The "overratedness" has reached epic proportions Isco is a technically astute player with great ball control But seriously When did he ever display this supposed top 10 all time technique on the big stage Won't do the back and forth because it seems you have solidly entrenched views at least for the benefit of this thread post 10 different examples of technical ability displayed by Zinedine Zidane that wasn't done by any footballer in history except maradona
I recall Vierra and Petite talking about Zidane saying he was from another planet as regards ability ..
Isco's touch is every bit as good as Messi's. I get why you don't see him in this category. He's not reached a legendary status. What would your top 10 look like?
I recall menotti saying Maradona couldn't be bettered from a technical perspective I recall Maldini saying R9 in 97/98 (and some games and moments in 98/99)was arguably as great as Maradona 5:55 I recall Bobby Charlton saying CR is the most technically gifted player he had seen live I recall 99.999999% of unbiased and objective fans acknowledging Messi in 14/15 was simultaneously one of the greatest goalscorers, dribblers and playmakers of all time What is the contextual relevance of emmanuel petit saying Zidane was from another planet Was zidane comparable to Messi in play making, dribbling or scoring Thread should retitled "Best ball control"not technique In overall technical skill set there were 10 players from 90-94 who were legitmately comparable or better to zizou Prime Baggio, savecevic and young Hagi were demonstrably superior dribblers Stojkovic was most definitely a superior short passer and medium range passer. Micheal Laudrup was 2 tiers ahead of zidane in short passing(and comparable in dribbling) Bergkamp was comparable to zidane in ball control(his greatest assest) Possibly a superior through baller Zidane only had an edge in long pass and mentality on the big stage (in 5-10 matches over his career) We haven't even got to brazilian technicians from the 70s and 80s (And even 60s) Zidane may of been more aesthetically "graceful" player than Pele But there is literally nothing zidane could do that he couldn't (the opposite is most definitely not true)
Georgie Best .. One of only two great players I've had the please to see in the flesh .. Those days the skilful players were hacked down constantly .. defenders even got a free 'tackle' in that didn't 'count' against them !!
I would say Zidane could hit volleys with either foot as good as anyone ive seen. Not sure if that belongs in the conversation. However, Zidane is definitely not the guy who i first think of when technique is mentioned. What i would say separates Zidane from anyone else is his ability to improvise with his ball control, as if he sees the matrix. He reminds me of this scene in Matrix: (1:14) That "elegence", that people often refer to, might cause issues in ranking him in such lists.
Technique ... you want technique ! I fell in love with Firmino’s style when his ‘no-look basketball trick shot’ was trending the day he signed for Liverpool.
Holy shit @PDG1978 Can you perhaps with the help of any French football experts on BS give an honest and detailed take on Chris waddle, how he was perceived in his marseille heyday and also compared to his contemporaries as Barnes and gazza Honestly I've been watching as much as I can of this player I see a player who at his best is a rival for any conventional wide man with the most complete offensive skillset (his passing range was like totally insane-as good as David Beckham I think) His dribbling was Messi esque( and in certain respects more impressive considering how tall he was) British managers in the 90s seemed to have an aversion to technical players One can only wonder what hoddle, gazza (sober version) and waddle would fetch in today's market
He was among my favourites around that time he played for Marseille (although I didn't see him playing for them a lot of course - sometimes in European games though I remember), and then Sheffield Wednesday. He had a loping running style but was still elusive (maybe it even helped him be deceptive with his movements on the ball), and with a good touch, especially on his left side and yeah he could be great with passes with his left foot played accurately over distance, often when cutting in on the right wing (he could play very good crosses from there too, and he could score free-kicks and goals like the one below with that leg even if missing the famous Italia 90 penalty over the bar with it too of course!) At times I guess his form could be a bit hit and miss, so sometimes he might lose possession easily etc (in the 1990 World Cup he had some games like this). I know he was good at Tottenham too, and I remember he scored a great goal for them dribbling down the left wing. Possibly while in England he wasn't seen as quite as good as Barnes (at club level over the season anyway), but by 90/91 maybe that had flipped around to Waddle's favour, though he was playing in France.
