That's perfectly valid. The Quakes are happy with this roster in that they believe it can achieve some internally defined metrics that they believe will ultimately be good for the business. Although I think with sports the best thing you can do for the business is win games. Give a good coach good players and win games.
Yes, but isn't that always true for every team? A bad signing can hurt any team, but a good signing can help a team. It's Jesse's job to get it right and I believe he can.
OK, tonight's not the night to discuss improving the roster. I'm gonna go enjoy salty tears of galaxy fans.
It turns out not to be a myth after all. Not to mention that Espinoza is apparently a DP in sheep's clothing. If we want to keep him, and he and his home club are willing, he'll need to be paid like one. So, in that sense, we have had a new DP signing this year.
on the other hand, you don't want players to get stale and rest on their laurels. you want competition for jobs. I've heard alan shearer say that blackburn keeping their title winning 1995 squad intact without adding anyone new the next season was a mistake and that they should've brought in one or two new players to freshen things up. they finished 7th the next season.
Of course. I was not asserting a bright-line rule. Managing a pro sports team is an art, not a science, as I've been known to tell the data-heads on occasion.
They were busy spending the first half of the season training with Samurai Headshots..worked out well....
Is that what Catías Almeyda said when he previously coached against both Tigres and Pumas? GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Despite plenty of pains and aches, quietly doing big things for the present and future of this organization, from the youth level to the main team. @JesseFioranelli deserves credit for his hard work and smart moves! pic.twitter.com/T1l09C2bHc— San Jose Ultras (@SanJoseUltras) July 18, 2019
The Bay Area's hottest pro team this summer is the @SJEarthquakes, a former cellar dweller suddenly morphed into a playoff contender. The @sfchronicle sat down with GM Jesse Fioranelli to discuss his team's rapid rise: https://t.co/j9nphhW5Kc #MLS— Nick Eilerson (@NickEilerson) August 16, 2019
I agree with Jesse about Almeyda saying he doesn't want superstars. Honestly, in this league, stars , especially ones who are over 34 years of age, aren't always a great solution.
I recall reading earlier this season that this was Fioranelli's do or die and/or last year to prove himself. If the Quakes are on the verge of playoff elimination, I'm thinking Jesse's time is about over in San Jose.
Too soon to think about not making the playoffs. We have a 50% chance of making it. In 2017, with 2 games left in the season, we had a 26% chance of making the playoffs. In the 93rd minute of the last game of the regular 2017 season Urena scored the goal that put is into the playoffs.
You didn't get the Memo, Quakes not supposed to make the playoffs, they should be happy they improved so much, signed Don Garber.
So what do we think? If we miss the playoffs (which I think likely) does Jesse get the sack? Do you want Jesse to get the sack? Or has he done enough that he should stay? And if we do sack Jesse, who do we replace him with? Craig Waibel? Or do we snag some big time Euro GM to replace him? I'm undecided on this, really. I can see good arguments for keeping Jesse whether or not we make the playoffs. He did bring in Matías, and between them, they've signed some good players (inspite of my misgivings). On the otherhand, we coould ask Matías what he thinks. My guess is that he likes Jesse. Do we want to get an MLS veteran GM? Someone who would make better use of the MLS talent pool? Of do we want someone from Europe or Latin America? Or make Chris Leitch GM? Or keep Jesse becase we think he's doing better. Thought? Go Quakes!! - Mark
How did 2017 end up? I know that just making the playoffs is considered a positive for MLS clubs but to me, backing into the postseason and getting beat 5-0 is still a disgrace and a waste of time. That playoff loss lead to a disgraceful 2018 season and we didn’t get better until a year later. Now if we end up making the playoffs and play well, then that’s another story. At least that way we can look back and have something to build on.
On New Years Eve, the Buffalo Bills broke a 17 year playoff drought by qualifying with a win coupled with a fourth down touchdown loss by Baltimore. Jesse Fioranelli was the first person to text me congratulations. That's how I remember 2017 ending up. Welcomed home by the best fans in the world.WOW. #GoBills pic.twitter.com/wSdKx9g2JW— Buffalo Bills (@BuffaloBills) January 1, 2018
If we do make the playoffs I expect we’ll lose by a lesser margin than 5-0. We’re a better team now. I can’t say I’m confident we can win on the road but I do think we’ll look much better. I’m super confident we (or any team) won’t win 4 straight on the road to win the cup. Also according to Quincy’s vlog the chartered flight to Vancouver broke down and the quakes had a rough time getting to Vancouver. Nobody ever talks about that.
If and right now its looking to be a big if we make the playoffs, it will depend on who we match up with... Right now, as 6th a place team, we will end up playing the Gals. We owned them all year but with Ibra turning it on, I can't believe he will lapse in the playoffs as for him and the rest of their club , this is their time. As a 7th place team, we face Minnesota and although I recall losing to them on the road, I do recall dominating them. But you are right, we may have a better chance this time around than in 2017.
