I would like to believe that with VAR present Korean goal would be revoked...although after seeing this World Cup I not so sure anymore.
Nothing could've been done on error offside calls. During first half far side line ref had decent game. He got most of the offside calls right (only one call was looking 50/50). Near side ref in 2nd half wasn't on par with his collegue. He was raising the flag early and many of his calls were wrong (like a yard wrong).

One thing for sure, depending on how frequent main ref would've use VAR, the nice game flow in this match would've been seriously damaged if she ended up using it to much. :cautious:

Now that's a marvelous idea and unique way to look at it. I hear you though. We (as a species) do pride ourselves in our pattern recognition skills but give us some optical ilusion or visual phonemena and we fool ourselves into believe in it. (nice little brain farts as DeGrass Tyson has called it ).
I wouldn't say that "phantom offside" comes right under inattentional blindness purview but the ground is there... ;)
In my understanding yesterday error calls (from near line ref) were effect of:
    bad positionig
and the decision to always raise flag early (perhaps made in good faith for the players benefit, not forcing them to chase each ball)

All in all the refs arent shoemakers (well maybe some of them also are ), my point beeing that they are proffesional umpires with a lot of experience in the game. Quality is expected. Especially in final match.

I thought both those penalties were very soft, especially the Nojima one, and I am a Nojima fan.

She is leaving for a 海外挑戦!Which means she is leaving for an overseas challenge, but as Unepommekun wrote nobody knows where yet, but I imagine it will be Spain.

Nice development and good idea. Glad to see lovely Kinga, next-door girl type, a daughter of sushi chef in a country town, again. The article states that Nadeshiko Care encourages activities and knowledge of womens soccer. Great endeavor. Again Japan needs a national law to systematically require schools to have same number and same quality of athletic programs and clubs between the genders, like Title IX in the U.S.

    Olympic Games 2020....
Whilst I cannot personally understand the 'song and dance' about winning Olympic medals in football (surely a WC winners medal is THE medal every football player wants to hang around their necks) if the former was the reason for Takakura sans appointment in the first place then now the heat is really on for her.

We have two friendlies (to be arranged before the end of the year), an EAFF, and probably (hopefully from where I am located) an Algarve Cup in March 2020.She has ten games (more if friendlies are set up after Algarve Cup) to come up with the winning Olympic formula.

    What are your expectations?
Mine are of the minimalist variety......I don't care if we win Olympic medals or not.
My expectations are very low indeed....very very low
All I expect is that we kick off in game number one of the Olympic Games with a starting eleven that was the same (or almost the same) as the eleven that started the four or five games prior to that first game and put up a good show.....low expectations indeed.
i.e....the tinkering has to stop by the end of the EAFF and subject only to dramatic downturns in form and injuries she will have chosen her first eleven plus subs by then.

If WWC 2019 has taught us anything it is that the right players, playing in the right positions, in successive games improve the prospect of a good team performance. It sounds like stating the bloody obvious but it seems to have eluded our head coach so far.
We are not going to win medals because I don't think we are going to solve the goal scoring problem that seems to have been ever present for years in the next twelve months (if you don't score goals you don't win tournaments)
    Hence my very meagre expectations.
I will continue to support Nadeshiko Japan whatever but my positive feelings toward our coach will have evaporated if she is still tinkering next March.
After watching WWC 2019 an ex player, one of the 'new' viewers I know, said something about our coach that has made me start thinking about Takakura san in a different light. It went something like this...
"....when you play in a team everybody can see when there are changes that need to be made, but there are also changes that don't have to be made. The changes that don't have to be made leaves the players feeling like the position (i.e.central defender) is more important than the player occupying that position"
I think what he was trying to say is if a player is in a squad where a central defender is a central defender is a central defender irrespective of their unique individual skills that player will find it very difficult to see themselves as part of a team when the coach seems to be viewing them as just a person filling the 'role' of central defender or whatever the position.
I know it's not very Nadeshiko to have 'star' players or to single players out for individual praise but I believe that recognising a players uniqueness and what their 'individuality' brings to the team whatever position they play in is more important than just recognising their ability to fill a 'position' on the pitch.

    Signed.......Gloomy of Manchester

The starkest contrast between the current Nadeshiko and the 2011 Nadeshiko is the lack of charismatic players, such as Sawa and Miyama, who were internally solid and skillful and externally inspired other team members and enhanced the synergy in the team.

It is my hope that Mana will become one in the future.

Why is more important WC than Olympics in women's football when all are both major competition tournaments? I could understand it if it was men's football because OG are U-23 level (but I don't like that either). For me is exactly the same, or even more hard to win because there are less and harder teams...

I agree with you when you say Olympic gold is probably more difficult to win but I still believe that most football players, male or female given the choice of winning Olympic gold or World Cup winners medal would choose the later simply because the World Cup is the stand alone competition for the game of international football as opposed to part of a greater spectacle.
I do believe other team games see Olympic medals as the pinnacle of success but I still believe the World Cup holds that position for football simply because its all about football...nothing else...but what the hell do I know.
If the Olympics inspire more girls to play the game that's enough for me.

I am not sure if it had been mentioned that on Wednesday the catch-up match from Challenge League West was played that had been postponed earlier in June for a thunderstorm.

    The result was:
    Belle (Adachi) 1-1 Speranza (Asano)

Had Speranza won that match, they could have kept the lead in the ranking despite today's loss to NGU. This way, instead, with today's win, NGU has become the new leader of Challenge League West. :coffee:

Only scarcely related, but Megan Rapinoe in a recent CNN interview expressed that she was very excited about the olympic next year. She sounded like Japan was special place to her, and she said she liked everything in Japanese culture. After WWC2011, Rapinoe, Morgan, Wambach and others visited the areas in Japan devastated by the earthquake and they encouraged the local people there. Wonderful girls. For a decade, thanks to the decency and grace of Nadeshiko players mentioned by many contributors here, Nadeshiko and the USWNT maintained a good relationship in contrast to the US relationship with Brazil and others. I am grateful to and proud of the Nadeshiko girls.

This was the final chance for Vegalta to access the semifinals, but they didn't succeed: the 0-0 draw was enough for Urawa to keep the one point advantage and to secure the semifinal vs Beleza. :coffee:

Nippatsu's 2nd place in Group A wasn't really in danger: Sfida Setagaya would have needed a win with a very good goal difference to actually catch up with them.

I wonder how relevant is was, though: Nadeshiko League Cup for Division 2 will have just a final, as in previous years, or semifinals also, like the Division 1's competition? :cautious:

Drama in East Division, as Niigata University, with this unexpected away win vs top 2 JFA Academy, passed Tsukuba FC Ladies, whose draw vs the other top team, FC Jumonji Ventus, wasn't enough to stay ahead! Now Niigata has an one point advantage over Tsukuba, who ended in the lower part of the rankings, the one where you have to play-off at the end of the season to stay in Challenge League.

And next week, in the last match-day of Challenge League's regular season, the schedule has... guess what?... sure, Tsukuba FC Ladies vs Niigata University of health and Welfare!:eek::eek::p

Well, apart from Yamane, we never had a GK leaving Japan to play abroad, and goalkeeping is one of the elements of our play that would benefit the most from international experience.

Longtime we didn't have a NWSL update: the fact is that our resident Japanese players (apart from Nagasato) look more and more marginal...

    - With a win vs Utah Royals FC, Sky Blue FC and two consecutive wins for the first time in this season. Given the previous abysmal results, though, these back-to-back wins weren't enough to lift them up from the bottom of the rankings, but at least they now share the last place with Orlando Pride. Nahomi Kawasumi was subbed-in at 85' only. The goal was at 90'+1', but Naho wasn't really involved in the action: a ponderous post-goal hug was basically her only contribution.
    Highlights: http://www.nwslsoccer.com/videos/4B5C56D1-D4CF-98FE-F97A-E95696B0D9DD

    - Chicago Red Stars, with an away win in Houston by 0-1, somehow made up for their previous home loss to Sky Blue FC. Nagasato played the whole match, but she's only seen in highlights for an assist in the box to Kerr, who anyway couldn't convert it. Chicago are now trailing in 5th position, level with Utah, although they're just one point behind that coveted, play-off-granting 4th place.
    Highlights: http://www.nwslsoccer.com/videos/1E5E62F6-69BD-66F0-4934-EEBBA529FC29

    - Seattle Reign FC had an heck of a record during the WWC: they had reached the top of the rankings, but yesterday they lost to North Carolina's Courage, thus swapping places with them at the top. They're anyway impressive and one could wonder what they can do when Golden Ball/Golden Boot/World Champion Megan Rapinoe will join the team next week. Meanwhile, though, Rumi Utsugi keeps being listed as injured (calf) and I wonder how serious this injury can be, since apparently it prevented her from playing at the WWC .

It was the report and the reflection of the problem points about Nadeshiko in WWC, because she was the only NT player in Albi.
She says that they hadn't been able to be expressing their true opinions against each other enough for three years.

Wow, second hat-trick for Ayaka Michigami in this Nadeshiko League Cup! She really found a new life in Iga FC Kunoichi.

Michigami has now managed to catch up with Mina Tanaka at the top of Nadeshiko League Cup's scorers' rankings, with 8 goals (Mizuki Sonoda and Megumi Kamionobe follow at 5). :coffee:

    Fumina. :inlove:

With today's brace, Eriko Adachi has scored 14 goals in 14 match-days of Challenge League so far. Not at the same levels of Mayu Ikejiri last year, but quite impressive anyway.

Meanwhile, with this win Ange Violet Hiroshima keep their slim hopes alive to catch up with Speranza at 2nd place or even with Nagoya at 1st place (thus battling in the play-off for Division 2): they anyway need to win in Nagoya (not easy), while Speranza should lose an home game vs Belle (even less easy). A draw in the Speranza-Belle match wouldn't be enough, because Nagoya's and Osaka's teams goal difference are way better (currently: NGU 29 p +19 gd, Speranza, 28 p +17 gd, Hiroshima 26 p +7 gd).

Her speech was for Albi fans after Albi vs Beleza match. She did it as a NT player who had gone to France.
