Looking back at that U17 final loss to Mexico, it’s astonishing we lost that. ‘17 was bad enough but good lord I think we hit the post or crossbar 3 or 4 times in regulation. We dominated that game, at least in regulation, just couldn’t finish AT ALL. Looks like the counting stats kind of bear it out. I wonder how many make the ‘21 U20 team. I think 6 of the ‘17 iteration did. Trying to remember.

  2. Thanks for explaining why.
However I think a couple of teams have enough talents to match to be competitive in the title race.

I like that team, although I would put Griffin Yow on the team.
What is the style of play of Kaya Ignacio?

Tolkin has been playing well in his last few games with Red Bull II. If he continues to get big minutes I think he gets a spot.

There’s so much competition at LB this cycle. If KHF is a CB and two LB’s are picked, I can’t understand the justification for him making it over Gomez or Bello, but maybe Bello (or Gomez) isn’t released and a spot opens up. Armour is another option for the spot.

Anyone know if FIFA will make the players undergo bone scans before this WC?

And he's now saying on Twitter that he's going to Wake Forest.

So, I guess he wasn't a pro after all...

Not a bad move for a lot of kids. It worked for Mason Toye going 1 and done and Omir Fernandez did 2 years at WF before turning pro with RB

I don't think its bad for a lot of kids under the current system, but a system where no real prospect is playing college soccer would be better.

And Reggie Cannon for that matter.........................

Lots of good examples in the USMNT. Folks keep predicting the demise of the NCAAs, and it continues to evade irrelevance.

Until the USL pathway is really established and lucrative, there will be kids who avoid it for the NCAA opportunity. One and done means a kid really isn't in school for very long.

If the story said he's going on a 6 month loan to Wake Forest FC it wouldn't look as bad. That's pretty much what he's doing. I think the system is fixing itself on its own. The top guys will sign out of HS, the next group will go 1 and done, a third group will need 2-3 years in college and a fourth group will never turn out to be pros and play in the USL for a year or 2 before starting their careers in a different field.

Until every player who has pro level ability is playing full time professional soccer, we won't be maximizing player production. Those who play college soccer should be the equivalent of Division 3 basketball or football players who have no chance with the rare exception of being professionals. We don't know who the best pros will be, which is why the player committed to Virginia Tech shouldn't be the ones who play college soccer and the ones who are committed to North Carolina are the ones who never show up or are one and done. We need all these players in pro environments, and to let who the best pros are decided be who shows best in professional football.

There are always going to be some players who are much better than everyone else at an early age (Pulisic, Adams) and are going to be good professional footballers with an early start in the pro game, but aside from those players, of which there are usually only 10-20 per age group, the rest are of a very similar level and who develops into the best player isn't something that is easily known. There's enough of a chance that the 325th best player at age 18 can be better than the 25th best player at age 18 that they both need to be playing professional football.

If only the top 40 are playing professional football, you lose the chance that the 325th best player was a late developer and was underscouted, yet isn't going to be able to maximize their development because they are playing half of the schedule (and amateur football) at the same time the 25th best player is playing double the schedule and professional football.

I'll agree with this. As a former college player myself, I felt that I was really improving just as the season was ending and when I returned in the Spring or August I wasn't even close to where I was. There's no question that had I been playing for 9-10 months I would have been a totally different player. Things are starting to improve with schools starting their own competitive leagues but the NCAA/US Soccer needs to come up with a resolution for a Full Spring league instead of limiting practice times/games in the spring.

In my area local clubs are also starting U20/U23 teams to play in the summer. Every year the league is expanding and next year my club (current HS/Youth coach) will have it's first U20/U23 team so college players can have a place to play for 2-3 months while home, a complaint that I had when I was playing and came home for the summer. We'll play a 6-8 game schedule with 3-4 practices a week (at night so it doesn't effect with internships) and hopefully can help continue the development of another 30+ kids in the area between the 2 teams. Some MLS teams already have this but I believe it'll be mandatory to have a U23 in the USL2 sooner rather than later. This puts kids in that professional setting and essentially gives them a 2-3 month trial.

There's quick fixes that can be implemented almost overnight that will undoubtedly raise the level of play in kids 19-22 but unfortunately USSF/MLS is worried about other things and the NCAA is 75 years behind.
