Gregg Berhalter is somehow the coach of the US men's national team. The team has looked like shit for much of his tenure. The team was beginning to look slightly better in the first half of some games when better players were allowed to play. If there was a stoppage (weather delay) or half time, the other coach makes adjustments and Berhalter does not. His sub patterns are shit. He was completely outcoached by Tata in the second half last night.
This was one of the most baffling decisions I’ve seen anyone make in a final. I was a Berhalter fan in MLS, but he’s not ready for international competition. Sidebar: Am I the only one who thought the Mexico uniforms would be a good template for DCU (sans watermark)? They reminded me a bit of the original look.
I thought the exact same thing when I saw the Mexico shirt. I have advocated, for a long time, that we adopt 2 horizontal red stripes as on the DC flag and seal. It would be another way to brand us to the district. The 2 red stripes would work on both the black and white jerseys, but would look especially nice on the white. We would get our stripes (and maybe a little of our mojo) back and not have a conflict with adidas. I'd like the stripes to be slightly wider than on the Mexico shirt though. asitis
To complete the Washington Family Crest, we would need three stars above the stripes, so then use DC United's four stars. But would the league allow that?
I wouldn't use the stars, just the stripes. The stars would make the design too busy. My thought is to "echo" the flag/crest, not replicate it. asitis
Tbf, his tenure is only like 8 weeks lol. 8 weeks is an exaggeration obviously but just saying no matter who the coach, time is needed.
Hell, even Ben Olsen out coached Tata on a regular basis with a roster that was worth a third less. So Berhalter must really be shit.
Speaking of coaches, I've seen reports that Josh Wolff is slated to coach the Austin team that will enter MLS in 2021. He is also said to be in the running for the Colorado Rapids. Yet another addition to the roster of ex-DC United players who finished their careers here and went into coaching or head office jobs: Vanney; Petke; Thorrington - and maybe more.
My take from the Gold Cup: 1. Reggie Cannon should be the starting RB over Lima. I would say the only thing Lima offers over him is experience and Strength. 2. Bring on the kids. Not all at once, but time for new blood for sure. (Sargent, Pomykal,
I think he was probably outcoached by Tata in the second half. Berhalter tried to adjust, and his adjustments didn't work. Did they not work because 1) his adjustments were crap; 2) the players he attempted to use in those adjustments are just not that good; 3) some combination of 1 & 2? I don't know, but I'm inclined to lean towards #3. Even so, it's hard for me to judge how bad a job Berhalter did on Sunday night when they *did* do better than I expected them to in the first half, and the set of players he has to work with is just really, really weak. That doesn't mean I think he's good. It means I don't really know how bad he is.
It made sense to me. We couldn't score without the ball. He saw Roldan as the player most likely to improve our ability to hold possession, which was our biggest problem in the match at that point: we were being overrun. It didn't work, but that's at least in part because Roldan isn't that good. Don't misunderstand me: I'm not arguing that Berhalter is a good coach. I'm simply saying that he had no good options at that point, and he chose one that IMO can be defended.
Defensible, and yet somehow not the choices most of us would have made. Someone's a genius, we just don't know who.
When Tom Brady graduated, I predicted that he'd have a respectable NFL career as as backup for about four years or so -- nothing to sneeze at since it's more than most NFL hopefuls achieve, and something he could be proud of as he subsequently moved on to the high-school coaching phase of his career. So I already know *I* know nothing about sports.
I went to the ticker tape parade for the women today. It's hard to express how inspiring and empowering they are, especially if you have a daughter, as I do. I was holding back tears for practically the whole thing.
When the WUSA folded, I used to take my daughter to Northern Virginia Royals women's games at a high school field in Woodbridge. Once we made a trek to Virginia Beach to watch the finals of what were the semi-pro teams that existed during that period -- including the "DC United Women". My daughter is 26 now, a big fan of DC United, calls Acosta "the million dollar baby" in an affectionate way, but always wanted to see women play the sport she loves. So, we went hither and yon tracking down itinerant semi-pro games because it was important to her -- and me. Hopefully 2019 will add further momentum to the growth of women's soccer so that girls growing up can watch top flight athletes compete in real stadia.
I feel like the womens european leagues (domestic and the champions league) are shown on YouTube for free at times. I remember watching the CL final two years running.
We weren't referring to Roldan who was the first sub. It was Lovitz who came in as a left back as the last sub. Either way, I would have brought on Tyler Boyd instead of Roldan.
