Definitely truth in #NUFC approaching Anthony #Hudson. Clearly talking to others, too. Talented coach who worked wonders with Bahrain, laid strong foundations at New Zealand and was unlucky at Colorado. Young British manager who deserves a chance. Trained under #Bielsa, too.— Ben Jacobs (@JacobsBen) June 24, 2019 For an American to get 11 games managing a PL team, he:1) Lead an expansion team to the domestic double2) Lead USA to their first major international final and to win their first World Cup group3) Lead Egypt during Port Said & revolution timesHudson lead COL to the cellar https://t.co/Cv7TGcDuUR— Tutul Rahman (@tutulismyname) June 25, 2019
If anyone wants a laugh, see that thread by Jacobs he's getting ROASTED by everyone to have suggested that Hudson left New Zealand with a strong foundation and was "unlucky" (WTF by the way) in Colorado. [emoji16]
I'm intrigued by the fact that a guy like Alan Pardew is interested in coming to MLS. Would he be the highest profile British coach to come here (if he gets the nod in Cincinnati)? I think Tab Ramos would be a good choice for any MLS team to consider.
If Ben Jacobs' piece was solely to generate discussion on his original premise, he was wildly successful. And if Newcastle do take a chance on Hudson, the #1 retro song at Tyneside radio stations would have to be Men At Work's "It's A Mistake"!
Or Rocky Mountain High, as everyone would be wondering what they are Smoking and where they can get some of it! I get the feeling that Tab isn't all that interested in being at the helm of an MLS team. FC Dallas would have been a perfect fit for him with their emphasis on youth development. Also, he's got a pretty good gig at Soccer House and unless something drastically changes he can basically choose his position in the youth ranks there.
Good morning. The San Jose Earthquakes are a top 5 team in @MLS despite making minimal year-over-year roster changes and if you’re not watching them regularly you’re missing out.Coaching matters. A lot. https://t.co/8NpEjYwQwQ— Matthew Doyle (@MattDoyle76) June 27, 2019 Rapids too.— Matthew Doyle (@MattDoyle76) June 27, 2019
Rumor mill says no on Pardew to Cincinnati. Maybe to Ron Jan. Tab isn't supposed to be high on the list either.
I was really on the Tab Ramos bandwagon when FCD was doing their coaching search and Luchi Gonzalez's on-the-job training is gonna have to produce some really great results for me to not feel like Dan Hunt screwed this one up.
Really? I thought it was a bad decision at the time, but I've changed my mind. Luchi Gonzalez has them at around a 1.5 PPG with lots of absences for international duty and he's taken #PlayYourKids to a new level. I believe Pomykal is the highest rated American in MLS this season according to WhoScored. It seems unlikely (based on 2018 when he barely played) Pareja would have gone all in on him the same way Luchi has. We can't say what Ramos would have done because he played Pomykal with the U-20s but he didn't exactly have a choice (see Caleb Porter going from college kids at Akron to being terrible at youth development as Timbers coach).
Padraig Smith on the Rapids' way forward “Over the last 18 months, I look back on the hiring process that led to the former coach Hudson," Smith told MLSsoccer.com on Wednesday. "That was one of the most enjoyable processes that I’ve been involved in. It was very detailed, a long search with a lot of depth. It’s good to go back and analyze it. Where did we make a couple mistakes? How can we learn from those in the future? But I still stand by a lot of the work that we did. Like any process, mistakes were made. I hope we’ve corrected them in the right way moving forward, but it’s been a lot of learning.” ... “We’re pleased with where we are, we understand the candidates that we’ve looked at outside of the organization and obviously Conor has done very well," Smith said. "We’ve narrowed it down to a very small number of candidates. We want to continue with the current run we’re on though, that’s very important. Ultimately, it’s about making sure we put these players in a position to succeed. As I said all along, I feel we’re a playoff contending team.”
While that might be true, this is his first professional managerial gig of any sort, and he's still prone to a lot of slipups like he had last night, including not subbing off a clearly out-of-gas Badji after about 60-75 minutes, subbing off the most dangerous player on the pitch who was doing the most to keep Vancouver from going all-in on the attack, and NOT EVEN USING ALL OF HIS SUBS WHEN THE TEAM HAS A ROAD GAME IN THREE DAYS. Regarding the first two items, I get that he wanted to get Mosquera some game action after an injury layoff, but subbing him on for Barrios instead Badji was a real headscratcher. So for the last 15 minutes after the Mosquera-for-Barrios sub, you had an out-of-gas Badji together with an out-of-form Mosquera. Regarding the third item, he had Bryan Reynolds up and warming up for about 10 minutes and Reynolds was even kitted up and ready to go, but Luchi never got him into the game. It's great that he's been able to have success with so many academy products, but that speaks more to his being a really great academy director than to his current abilities as a manager of a professional team. I'm not saying he's a bad manager, but a big reason why FCD blew a two-goal lead in about 10 minutes and thus two points at home lies squarely with him.
BBC: Patrick Vieira among names to replace Rafael Benitez Vieira, 43, has just completed his first campaign in European club management with Nice. He is happy with the French side and in no rush to move, but will listen to Premier League side Newcastle if they make contact.
Growing pains. As with all managers/coaches in their first go round in the role they will be mistakes made. There will be ups and downs with Gonzalez. So far there have been more ups than downs this season. Going with a youth heavy roster is going to lend itself to ups and downs as the youngsters learn to be professional players and also win games at this level. As a Union fan, I've watched Jim Curtin go through his growing pains the past few seasons. FCD appears to be an organization that favors stability over chaos, which will be good for Gonzalez's development as a head coach/manager. IMO Curtin gets a lot of unfair stick from the Union Fanbase. He's gotten a helluva lot out of limited squads in the past. His growth the past few seasons, especially this season with Ernst Tanner's guidance & support, has been fun to watch.
The dreaded vote of confidence... TFC president gives Vanney vote of confidence Manning admitted with the team in a tough spot, the pressure is on Vanney, but he gave a vote of confidence. "That's his challenge right now. Greg, as you mentioned, is in the biggest skid he's been in since he's been here. And we've challenged him that the results are unacceptable. We have to be a playoff team. Right now we're above the playoff line but we can't keep conceding losses. With that said, Greg won us a championship. And I believe and Ali [Curtis, TFC's general manager] does as well, he deserves the opportunity to get this ship right, but it has to get right. That's really what we're looking at." At the same time, the team president did not hold back in assessing the team's recent form. "We're finding ways to lose and we have not attacked with bite and passion," he said. "And it's one of those things where we get behind a goal, the game is over."
Eighteen months ago, Greg Vanney won the coach of the year award, more recently than anyone currently coaching in the league (inasmuch as last season's winner skedaddled).
In 2004, Greg Andrulis won MLS coach of the year after the Crew won the supporter's shield. By midseason 2005 he was fired.
After some strong rumors that Fraser was going to be named Rapids manager, nothing has happened. Some fans are starting to wonder if TFC is preventing him from taking the job, maybe with the hope of keeping him around in case they need to dismiss Vanney?
Earlier this week, former #RBNY manager Jesse Marsch kicked off his first training session with RB Salzburg. It’s odd how little hype is around this right now.
