For City, that’s still chump change... That said, if he comes in and stars for Fortuna then he might get a chance to be a legitimate 2. Don’t get me wrong... I like Steffen... but being the #1 for City is out of his reach unless he comes in and wins goalkeeper of the year for the Bundesliga next year.
No worries. I figure everyone (and Steffen himself) is aware of the impossibility while Ederson is around. The move is the best opportunity to see himself starting at a mid-table club for a few years. That City reference on your resume is $$$
ill believe its a good fit when i see it. incumbent 35 yo german keeper, 39 yo backup (no ones worried about), and a couple of young german keepers. i could easily see him lock down the backup spot, but assuming hes the starter is a big assumption. @8 games a year for our national team keeper is closer to disaster than "good fit"
Done deal. Fortuna Düsseldorf will sign #USMNT goalkeeper Zac Steffen on loan from #ManCity. Steffen is supposed to challenge Rensing for the number 1 role at #F95 (kicker).— Manuel Veth (@ManuelVeth) June 23, 2019
Good luck in the Paris of Germany: Steffen at Fortuna You can tune a fish, but can you Fortuna Steffen? It ain't me... Steffen: The Fortuna One?
Fortune Favors the Loaned: Steffen at Fortuna A good landing spot for him to prove he's #2 worthy for Citeh.
The Steffen to Man City move is so much different than say EPB or Miazga. Goalkeepers sort of get hoarded by clubs all the time. Only one can play, and no one wants to be a #2 when they are young. The idea for the clubs is that you have someone that you can recall that is ready made in case something goes wrong that other clubs get to develop without paying any transfer fee. David Stockdale was on Fulham's books for six years, making 39 appearances. 24 of those were in the second half of his last year there (he spent the first half on loan at Hull). He's been a steady Championship performer ever since leaving Fulham. Steffen is firmly in the window every year he gets loaned. It's a great opportunity to prove himself as goalkeepers really aren't dependent on the style of play or manager changes, etc... They just have to defend what they are given with. Really happy for him considering how poorly his first move to Europe went that he's already back in the game at 24. Equally excited that Horvath rebounded so well last year and once Steffen qualifies for his work permit the best man can win (Steffen obviously stayed with the Crew so he can get the number of appearances required for automatic qualification at the Gold Cup this summer).
I prefer the non-redundant fortune/fortuna but either way is fine by me. Whatever makes the loan work out for the best hahaha and for anyone who has nostalgia for absolutely atrocious comedy videos from the 90's "Dorf goes fishing ForTuna: Steffen at Dusseldorf" that one is so awful i couldn't keep it to myself.
Because Steffen did not play in last night's game v. Panama, he will not be automatically eligible for a UK work permit this summer unless the US cracks the top 20 in the FIFA rankings.
