Against Trinidad who was basically lost, this will work. The reason I want Pulisic on the wing now is that in games that matter and against higher quality opponents that won't leave runners open and offer next to nothing coming back, is that it won't work against the better teams. You think Mexico is going to allow Bradley time on the ball? So I want my best 1v1 players on the outside not on the inside where its going to be clustered with everyone pressing Bradley/Tr
The ability for a CAM to float is unquestioned but what happens when you play against a team that can actually defend/counter and do so effectively? You leave yourself wide open on the counter because you'll essentially have two wingers, and a Bradley/Trapp who is too slow to recover trying to stop the ball coming the other way.

So the idea is more for balance. I don't want my CAM to have to float all the time to get space. Bradley can't create it because he will be pressed. Would you rather have Arriola or Pulisic going 1v1 on the wing against a good team? And which of the other 2 would you rather have expending energy tracking further back all the time? So yes Pulisic can dominate from anywhere, but against a better team his skills equate to best being used on the Wing and allowing someone else to come into the CAM role creating better team balance and a better position to win possession back and cover counters.

The same thing it says that we scored 5 goals after he came off for Jordan Morris, apparently...

Holden is worse than both of those guys.

Oh, I go way back before that. Even before Seamus Mallon and Tommy Smyth...

Seriously, Holden is horrible, and unlike Twellman, who started horrible and got better, Holden has gotten worse. He never says anything that isn’t obvious, and he says everything three times, like, “they need desire, to want it more, to want to win”...

Maurice Edu, on the other hand, was excellent in the U20 games. Would love to see him get more games

I'm just happy he gets shots on target. Sort of sad that Boyd and Arriola are now plug in options simply because they get a few shots are target compared to nearly everyone else.

That's a generous memory of Balboa, who was absolutely atrocious in 2006. Struggled to even get words out when calling games.

My guess is that Edu will rise up in the hierarchy at Fox. I think the best thing I can say for him is the fact I didn't notice him much when he's done color.

Holden struggles to articulate anything effectively and has a terrible broadcasting voice.

I still get the joy of Smith when I watch Philly. He and JP together are like watching a Champions League game from the 1990s.

    Seamus Mallon was awesome.

Holden is like someone had a friendly sounding AI watch Premier League games in order to teach it color commentary.

I am grateful to Balboa's commentating for one thing: that was when I started watching games on mute and used the game time to listen to music I liked, a practice I continue for every sport all these years since. (Not counting big-big matches like finals, etc.)

Wasn’t it you who said something about corrolation and causation? Regardless, if your point is Morris has better overall quality than Boyd, I’d call that an interesting perspective.

That is possible. I've wondered about him for a while, but his player biases line up nicely with the what Fed is trying to sell. His comments about Miazga being benched for a poor game against Venezuela when Long was the one responsible for two goals (Steffen the other) and got pulled at the half were just too odd for me.

Is it not possible that Occam's Razor in this situation is that anything Holden says was fed to him someone else? He is horrible, but there is no consistency in his comments other than regurgitating what comes from Berhalter/Fed.

Couldn't agree more with the post, especially the bolded part (my bolding). He's not as big as Jermaine, but he has the same bite and knowledge of just how much bite is allowable.

In the MLS fan world, Morris is bestest. Boyd is clearly the better wing to me however.

haha, I don't think anyone skated the line between foul and card better than JJ. To me, many times he was over the line but managed the refs in a way that he got away without the card. Great skill to have and I think it may take time for Wes to get to Jones level.

that would be true if Holden was announcing pro bono...

ignoring how his bread is buttered is idiotic.

I think his physical appearance, the narrative around his career and his "nice guy" persona are the reasons he is in there...might or not be him "towing the company line" as ordered...could very well be that's just how he is....

But I just hate that the selection process for who the announcers are...leads to him.....

I want an announcer who is clever, shrewd, understands the game and can speak about and (hopefully) educate the general public on the sport....which is basically the exact opposite of what we get going back to the days of jack edwards etc...

I really think the announcers for USMNT games have a huge influence on the sentiment around the team and the general perceptions of the fanbase....much larger than they should, all things considered...and it could be a driving force of the team's improvement in theory....and SUM and FOX and ESPN are hip to the game and act accordingly to protect each others interests...and it can get horrible to listen to.....

the sad irony is that they are really only delaying the development of the sport in the US by picking the announcers that they do....,meanwhile they think they are "reaching a wider audience"....

For the past couple of years, unvarnished honesty about USMNT has been bad for business.

    Horses for courses.

Zimmerman-Long looks like a solid pair to face C-CAF opposition. Our more... sophisticated CBs (Miazga, Brooks, Cameron, Ream) never looked comfortable here.

Sometimes you need guys ready to get down & dirty and used to having limited teammates up front.

Because each game has, and will continue to, bring the inadequate roster selection to the forefront as the overriding issue with this version of the USMNT.
