Anyone know the tiebreaker if goal differential is the same? Most goals for, or least goals given up?
I have said this in many threads in many different forums. If a Defender raises his hand in the area near his head he only has himself to blame for a penalty. Especially now with VAR you are not going to get the benefit of the doubt. Keep your hands low or behind you.
VAR has definitely revolutionized the sport. it will take time to adjust but i think it is fair at the end of the day.
In some ways I agree with this but rules are rules. The hands and arms of all players, including the goalkeepers, are not considered when making an offside decision as the law stands (at this moment). Maybe in the future they would include any part that can be legally touched which would make keeper hands something to keep players onside. But it obviously would have to be in the Box.
It is being overused. I don't mind it being used for clear and obvious calls but it is used for such minimal errors like a bloody shoulder offside, where even Venezuela don't protest.
I did not want Brazil to tie last night, but I agree. If the goals were indeed offside, the fair and just call was for the goals to be disallowed. A reason this is getting a bit of controversy is that the exact same thing occurred in the match vs. Peru. If anything, VAR aside, Venezuela deserves credit. They are far from being a World Cup contender, but they have improved dramatically from where they were just a few years ago. Drawing Brazil in Brazil and defeating Argentina in neutral ground is not too bad for a team that was for very long taken for granted as a "will be defeated" opponent.
Don't have to keep your hands behind you anymore (as of 1 June). If they are hanging next to your body naturally, VAR will let it go.
I was watching on ESPN+ and they didn't seem to understand what happened at all. I honestly wasn't sure either. I thought the guy that stuck his hand out might have hit the ball.
It was difficult to see the ball come off Firmino from most camera angles. When I first saw the play and I asked myself "what could possibly be wrong with that goal?". But the camera angle from behind the net made the deflection quite obvious (not sure if that angle was shown on espn(?)).
On Venezuela, results show that their improvement actually happened a while ago. Around 2007 there was a noticeable upgrade. They almost qualified for the 2010 World cup but messed up at home against Paraguay near the end of qualifying. But that was still an impressive run against, what I would argue, were stronger CONMEBOL teams overall (compared to now). Lately I think they have regressed, but have taken advantage against historically weak sides put out by Brasil and Argentina. Lets be honest, even Qatar could beat Argentina right now.
Even so, you don't want it in the hands of the refs (no pun intended) if you put your hand near your face or head and it hits your hand. They are not going to give you the benefit of the doubt most of the time.
Anyone impressed with that Almoez Ali guy from Qatar? I was definitely impressed with his game and Qatar in general. Think Paraguay was lucky to win that one.
Sudanese of origin. Forward and top scorer at the Asian Cup. Him and Akram Afif are their 2 top players.
Yeah very impressed. It will be interesting to see how he does against Colombia, as they are IMO the toughest backline to crack.
If people are pissed already with VAR ... just waiting till they see VAR applied to GK off the line early on PKs. Already being used in women's WC.
It'll be interesting to see how much stoppage time this Colombia/Qatar game has. I'm 100% in favor of VAR, but some of these refs are taking forever to to go to it and aren't adding appropriate stoppage time for all the delays. I think that handball review actually took about 4 minutes.
Those Qataris, bless their hearts: complaining to the ref even after he took back a penalty+YC against Qatar. It is like they wanted an apology from the Venezuelan referee. Interesting how players can force a VAR review, if they complain hard enough. That referee won't be officiating games in later stages.
That's game. Qatar trying to start shit again. Get the ******** out of our tournament you bitches. Learn to handle a loss and when you're being beaten by a better team. Seriously, they need to change their attitude for the Conf. Cup and the World cup if they're going to be decent hosts like Russia.
