That is it in a nutshell. Hoddle beget Gullit beget Vialli . . . Hoddle then went on to manage England and talk to dead people and be mean about spastics, etc. Gullit and Vialli were also very good for us, neither went on to become great managers elsewhere. Hoddle deserves a lot of credit. Regarding Lampard. I think we all feel it is too soon, although some here seem to think that he might be too English? But "too soon Frank" OR whom? The elephant in the room is the transfer ban. I like the idea of the Ajax bloke Erik Ten Hag, but he aint coming with the ban in place. It seems the club's thinking was Sarri in place until Allegri - with Sarri paving the way until Allegri had enjoyed his sabbatical. But Sarri was homesick. AND the Chelsea board should have given him more backing/support OR fired the bloke. Roman and the Chelsea board can be real sneaky at times. So now we need a manager. All opinions welcomed - in the same way we give our opinions on who we would like to see sign for Chelsea FC as players - no, we are clearly NOT involved in the decision making process. But debate is fun right?
Claude Makélélé is set to join the Chelsea coaching staff. btw - Tiémoué Bakayoko credited Makélélé for helping turn his career around at Monaco.
"Chelsea Football Club welcomes back Jose Mourinho as manager. We also got our transfer bullshit put on hold and are pleased to announce Nemanja Matic as our first signing."
maybe because a lot of names already got thrown out and we're tired of rehashing the same? especially as all the media speculation is now really focusing on one person? https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/ha...transfer-thread.2085122/page-68#post-37766177 https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/ha...transfer-thread.2085122/page-68#post-37766177 https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/ha...transfer-thread.2085122/page-78#post-37860092 https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/who-next.2104144/#post-37834816
What a strange view. There is no requirement that any of us come up with the "right" name to manage Chelsea if we don't think Lampard is capable of doing the job. Just because it's not my job to clean floors, doesn't mean I can't point out that you shitting on the floor is a BAD IDEA. Anyway, which manager we hire is largely missing the point, because the real issue we currently have is process. How is this club being run and what is our strategy going forward? Debating the merits of individual coaches is largely moot until we sort that out. For instance, I think Allergi is a good coach. But he's also a defensively minded one who likes rotating. Is our squad suited for that? Well.......... Which gets to the larger point - what is our squad suited to? I can't tell. We have CBs who're suited to play possession, but a RB who is CLEARLY not, and LBs who're all over the place. We now have Jorginho, but no real box to box midfielder. We have a striker who is good for playing a possession system but not really one to go over the top. Our wingers are also a mix of different system players. So how should we play, exactly? Whatever manager we get will have to figure out how to make the most out of these somewhat mismatched pieces. So then how do we go forward? One of the reasons Liverpool (and to an extent Spurs) have been so successful is a consistent strategy. Liverpool have an identity and have been buying players to fit it. Spurs have similarly. Citeh's strategy is to basically spend whatever money Pep wants on whatever targets he chooses, something we can no longer copy. So what do we do? The way forward we seem to have chosen, hiring a bunch of Chelsea legends with nearly zero experience is a bad process. That's what United is getting laughed at right now! Look at Dortmund - they have a solid policy in place, and while they struggle winning in Germany, they also constantly make huge profits selling players despite having a fraction of Bayern's spend. We can't completely copy that, but how about we at least look to do so? Without a strategy and a process going forward, throwing out manager names is a meaningless game. If we'd have hired Kopp with a team full of players built for Conte's system, he wouldn't have succeeded either!
I really hope we commit to playing a position brand of soccer. We don’t have the players to pull it off quite yet. However, we have a mixed bag of players so we might. I’d like to hire a coach to attempt to play a more progressive attacking brand . Especially with the ban and looking at the young kids. I think our current talent pool place towards a 3-4-3 or 4-3-3 but we need to almost waste a year and let them grow.
Ten Hag has extended with Ajax. https://www.ajax.nl/streams/actueel/ajax-verlengt-contract-erik-ten-hag.htm
media kind also made a big deal about some of his comments about hazard but to me they were mostly true. he basically said that hazard was great but that his characteristics caused defensive issues he had to sort out differently than at napoli, which is kind of a nothing comment that isn't really that controversial. he also compared that his napoli side was all team players that could all play one touch and not as much individual skill, where as chelsea had technically superior players and maybe 7-8 that could play one touch but had wingers that liked the ball at their feet and make a difference on their own. at face value, that's just playing with different players and having to adjust. of course the implication is that chelsea didn't have "team players" but i don't really think he's being dishonest. if anything he's just admitting that he struggled to adjust to the players at chelsea some, which we all knew.
It will be interesting to see how he gets on at Juve. He will have Ronaldo instead of Hazard and he will have to win the league or be seen as a failure. He has a better chance winning the league with Juve than he ever would have done with Chelsea. I wish him all the best. It would be fun to play Juventus in Europe next season.
Although history has a very loose definition I think it would be naive not to recognize that Juve are one of the most storied clubs in world football and we are not. We have been recently successful of course (and a lot of fans equate history with success over existence), but it's not surprising that a new manager of Juve would play to that. Of course we've not been stripped of league titles either but you take the rough with the smooth (and our hooligan element is hardly something to be proud of). It's a long way removed from how that snake keeper left us and I hold no grudges over the comments Sarri made. Time for everyone to move on.
^^^ This has been by far the best we've ever left off with a manager. Such a win win for everyone involved.
I am definitely going to tune in to Serie A games next season. 3 ex-chelsea managers at three top clubs. Will be fun.
I'm curious how you deluded yourself into thinking we played anything resembling attractive football under any of them. Props for having happy memories of them. That's cute I guess.
