I can get behind that. I see last summer as stage one: Leno, torriera, Sokratis. This summer should be a top LB and cover at RB/CB. As much as we’d all like a top CB as well, I think it might have to wait. If holding comes back and we keep chambers and Kos around, we should have cover. Next summer we can pasture the old guys and go all in on a top CB if needed. Honestly, I don’t see us breaking into top four this season though. Even with a few new defenders, I think we still will trail our rivals in quality. Last year we had a leg up bc the others had so many players off on international duty in summer. This summer it’s a more level playing field. As for torriera, would be shocked if he was sold for 40m euros. Would have to be nearer the 50-60 mark. Club needs to move his family over or something to keep him happy. For Fraser, he’s a decent option if not exciting. Would be a better signing if we still had giroud as I can’t see Auba getting on the end of Fraser’s crosses. It all comes down to price though. If he comes for a reasonable fee and wage then it’s a good signing. Players like him are easy to move on if it doesn’t work out. Look at Clyde and Solanke, etc.
Chelsea are a pile of uncertainty and Utd a pile of shit. I think Arsenal, if invested in wisely, could crack top 4 next season.
Alexis Claude Maurice has agreed personal terms with Arsenal - a deal does feel imminent, but not done. https://t.co/luvH3GI21b— Get French Football News (@GFFN) June 15, 2019 Report out of France that a deal with 21 yo winger Alexis Claude-Maurice "feels imminent". Same club as Guendouzi last year. Does seem expensive for Ligue 2. Philippe Auclair was on the Arsecast yesterday, he was pretty high on Saliba, saying that is the type of player Arsenal should be signing. He thought Claude-Maurice will take more time to adapt to the PL.
Re Chelsea I agree. You can't minimize the loss of Hazard and if they can't sign anyone to replace him they could be in trouble. United on the other hand will probably go out and spend another 200 million, so we don't know what they'll look like until the srart of the season.
Point stands though...we should have finished third given the collapses by the competition. Emery raus.
Just listened to it and Ted actually clarified it wasn’t shot stopping that showed up below average, it was consistent errors.
The Arsenal vision podcast had Moe from statsbomb on and he was high on Saliba too. He also really liked Marcus Thuram. And he agreed that Claude-Maurice would probably take a year to adjust but he really liked him. Said his early numbers compare well with Pepe (as in looks to be heading in that direction).
This fcuking ted Knutson How about people watch the players playing regularly before saying how amazing g they are? People act like this guy is the oracle Sometimes data isn’t applicable when comparing levels and leagues at certain ages
I liked that Mo guy. And he appeared to know his stuff. But there was a slight element of BS to him I detected.
Anyone seen this link for a swap deal between Arsenal and AC Milan for LucasTorreira and Franck Kessie? https://metro.co.uk/2019/06/15/ac-m...eira-consider-offering-franck-kessie-9967712/
These guys don’t just run xG models mate. They scout players too. In detail. Ted’s an Arsenal fan, and he was hyping up the players that Liverpool signed before Liverpool made those signings: Salah, Mane, Naby Keita, Firmino.
Yeah, he was positive about Saliba, lukewarm about Marcus Thuram, but absolutely gushed about Ibrahim Sangare and Youcef Atal. He’s been gushing about Atal for months.
Yeah but let’s not pass off his work as our own? I honestly dont understand how anyone can can clamour for players they have barely seen themselves I think most people saw how good mane was at Southampton and firminho was a decent player who is perfect as a false 9 Keita has had an average season but most people knew about him etc Salah was always a prospect at Basel but mourinho had no idea how to use someone who isn’t a shuttle running drone
What particularly would you point to as an example? I'm not asking just to have a go at you, I'm honestly interested because I found him to be fairly candid about the speculative nature of his work.
There was a part where Elliot asked him about his “hit rate” on his prospects and Moh said he never tracked that. Then Elliot said, “okay, so no accountability—love it” or something. Not BS, but I thought that was telling about these scout types. Anyway, Liverpool getting all kinds of praise for their data use, but it’s really more about judging the market trends that is key to their success. As Jitty has said I think, it’s more about the decisions to enter/exit holdings at the right prices. One of the first big things NESV or Fenway or whatever they were called, did was to tell us to feck off re Suarez. That wasn’t data driven, but made them 30-40m in extra profit on the player and almost won them the league along the way. Add to that sterling, mane, salah, VVD, Coutinho, etc. they haven’t had 100% hit rate, but is miles above where Arsenal have been the last 7-8 years. What decisions have arsenal made? Chamakh; dumping wages on Theo, ozil; getting nothing for Ramsey; getting little for Sanchez, szcezza; overpaying for mustafi. It’s not all bad, Ox was probably good money given his injury record. Selling giroud and Coq at a decent price as well. But I’d guess we are no better than a coin flip with our decisions while Liverpool are in the 70-80% band.
Trying to systematise decision making into a formula is too simplistic. The variables for any decision is always infinite. Circumstances are never the same twice. Liverpool have got things more right than wrong recently but the stat-modelling only started working out after enough growing pains. It will slump again when analysis lags behind data gathering. It's a cycle. The trick is to be on the right end of the cycle continuously. Very few clubs manage this.
Can't remember the specific points in the intvw. Not gonna go back and relisten. But he had the air of someone who's invited to speak as an expert and when asked something he's not 100% prepped for he might "freelance" a bit. But as I said before this was only a slight impression. And I liked his comments/knowhow in general. Ps. Thanks for tuning me into Arsenal Vision last year. I've become an avid listener.
