    That's pretty cool.

The San Jose Earthquakes always looked best with a blue jersey / black shorts / blue socks primary uniform, particularly with a jersey sponsor. I'm still waiting on the day the team returns to that primary color scheme so that I can finally buy and wear a new Earthquakes authentic jersey again (thankfully my 2016 authentic primary jersey still fits, though). :)

    GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! :(

Everything changed when Addias took over the MLS. I liked the MLS a lot more back in the late 90's & the 00's. Also I liked those plaid unis your side used to sport but that was Clash back then.

Calvillo is by far our weakest player on the field tonight and he's smack dav in the middle of it.

Can't watch, overseas on vacation, so this thread is what I've got. Any descriptions are appreciated. From what it sounds like we need to win this game just to provide more playing time for players like Tarbell and Calvillo who aren't getting minutes.

Sacramento came out looking focused and playing hard, Quakes not so much.....Magnus and Espinoza had a good game....the reserves that got playing time looked a bit rusty...Quiet night for Wondo...Tarbell still makes me nervous....on to the 5th round....

How many times has he played in his quakes career? 10 times? Under 100 minutes?

    Yes on both counts.
Sac fans brought some very loud drummers, and it seemed the Ultras tried hard and succeddd in out singing them all night.

Interesting how the quakes play pretty well even when they’re Not playing all that well.

Except Calvillo, who gave away quite a few balls.

Why at the end of the game, did the announcer say that the Quakes’ next opponent will be determined by a draw on Thursday? Or did i misunderstand? We don’t just play one of the LA teams next?

The 16 teams that survive this round (there are a bunch more games tomorrow) will be divided into four-team geographic groups and there will be a draw to set the bracket and hosts for the next two rounds. There will be four West Coast teams (Quakes, LAFC, Seattle-Portland winner, Galaxy-Orange County winner), and you can count on that being the group.

Kudos to Almeyda and how he responded to the Flo injury and substitution. With the score 2-2, Yallop or Kinnear would have made the like for like switch and brought in Ockford for Flo. But, not Matias, he went for the win and brought in Vako and had Felipe drop into central defense alongside Affolter. Vako goes on to score to put the Quakes up 3-2 and then Matias brings in Ockford for Cavillo, with Felipe going back to midfield. Great coaching!
Imo opinion Tommy was the man of the match. Solid in defense and causing all sorts of grief for Sac down the right flank.
Vako gets a MOTM nod also for coming and getting the job done with 2 goals in about 35 minutes of play, but, should have had more.
And great to see Matias have such faith and trust in 15 year old Cade Cowell, who put in a good shift as a sub for Hadji. I hope we see more of him as the season progresses.
    Eriksson was decent.
Espinoza had some bad touches and errant passes while playing on the left, but, was much better when he moved over to his more accustomed right side.
I thought Hadji, Lopez, and Cavillo all struggled in this match.
I think if we were at full strength we would have crushed Sac, but, kudos to them for not giving up and making the game interesting.

Lopez was notably slower than his opponents on his side, which caused problems both defensively and offensively. I don't know if it's possible to 'learn' how to be faster, but that is clearly necessary in his case.

Well, that was an entertaining game, if nothing else. My suspicions about the team struggling to build attacks without Vega were somewhat realized. Tarbell just isn't as comfortable on the ball, and he relies on putting it in a very particular place when he's under pressure with it. He just doesn't see the field as well as Vega does.

That said, he did stop some difficult shots, even if the rest of the defense let him down on rebounds. I was okay with his performance, but I don't suspect he'll be with the team beyond this season. Unless he can develop some field playing tools in short order, there's just no reason to keep him on.

Calvillo was really bad, unfortunately. Underhit passes constantly, didn't mark appropriately, just very disjointed. But I'm glad he got playing time. He's going to need to work through those issues, and hopefully he can continue to build up. If only his header hadn't hit the crossbar.

I think Luis Felipe had one of the best nights for a Quakes player. He was forced to play two different positions at two different times, and did pretty well. I actually thought he looked better as a central defender than midfielder, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him get more minutes there, especially if Jungwirth can't play due to injury.

Speaking of Jungwirth, he botched it on Sacramento's first goal hard. Real hard. That was a pretty bad mistake. Granted, Lopez didn't close in well enough, so the cross was preventable, but you have to make solid contact if you're going to clear and Jungwirth just didn't.

Lopez had a very up and down night. His passing was relatively poor going forward, he failed to mark closely enough on several occasions, but he also had tons of energy, made several very good recoveries, and allowed other players to get forward. As a substitute, I think he's about as good as one can expect.

Eriksson is obviously more comfortable in the middle, and about a thousand times more effective. He's a bit slow at times, as we all know, but he clearly understands where to be and what he should be doing. I can now see what Fioranelli saw in him when he was signed. Too bad Stahre was completely unable to figure out how to play to his strengths.

Haji was an interesting case. I think with a bit of seasoning, he could turn into a very good player. My main criticisms of him are his ability to receive passes, which let him down a time or two, and his ability to pick out other players when attacking. If he had seen some runs, he could have created some genuine opportunities that kind of petered out because he tried to do too much (learning the wrong lessons from Vako perhaps).

Vako was pretty good. He wasn't marked particularly well, which really helped, and his second goal was a wonderful bit of work to just blow by two defenders to get a ball over the top. He was a good substitution.

Wondolowski didn't do much aside from run around. Can't say I'm surprised given he played a full game on Saturday, but I really wish Hoesen could have played in this game. I think it would have been a much more lopsided affair had there been more speed up top. It's funny to me that Sacramento was significantly better than Chicago was in defending Espinoza's low crosses into the box. None of them got to their target, so credit to Sacramento for that. And of course, if you do that, Wondolowski's effectiveness starts to really drop off.

And finally, back to the defensive end, Thompson did well. He wasn't perfect, but he defended very well a few times and added quite a bit to the attack. He's starting to really come into his own as a player. Affolter was pretty good. His foul in front of the box was a howler, but overall I thought he played well enough. I worry about his habit of putting his head down very low to play the ball, but he reads the game quite well, and when he makes more desperate defending plays, he seems to play the ball toward teammates with purpose rather than just blindly hacking away at it. I was worried that when Luis Felipe dropped back there might be communication issues, but that really didn't come up. It helped that San Jose had most of the possession, but I've been pleasantly surprised by his play.

Overall, it was a fun game to watch on a Tuesday night. It stayed interesting the whole time, the weather was very nice, though the air quality was not great. I'm glad they managed to win, and score a bunch of goals while doing it.
