i think a wake up call from playing with men might be good for gio in encouraging him to develop his soccer brain. he is too dominant physically at his age level and it’s causing some bad habits imo

Now that the U20s are done I really hope Kreis doesn’t play Durkin as a 6 he was atrocious. Servania was much better than him vs France

Since it's probably the Berhalter system, I think Yueill is the front runner as the #6 for the qualifying roster (assuming it's MLS based).

I still question his athleticism for that spot but Almeyda has turned him into a fighter and gets stuck in now so it might be able to work. Interesting to see the quakes play like how Almeyda used to play as a mid, tough as nails getting stuck in kinda player

Yueill has the characteristics of a player who could be picked by some European club sooner rather than later. It depends on his passport situation, of course. Isn't it a Scottish last name? Maybe he got some grandparent there.

U17 striker AOC posted an IG story of him flying to Utah in US gear, between that and Reyna being listed on the leaked incomplete roster I’m thinking this will be some sort of U23/U17 hybrid camp, or just filling out some roster spots with easier to release players

George Acosta unattached, confirming his departure from Boca Juniors. Will be interesting to see where he ends up.

Koreniuk and Zubak went from the initial roster to not being included. Potential for a US Open Cup appearance for them?

Not a traditional 6, but he can definitely play the Trapp role in this system with the RB pinching up and inside.

Updated U23 callup list. I included Koreniuk and Zubak since I figure it's fair to assume they're part of the pool:

    Aaronson Brenden
    Acosta George
    Akale Mukwelle
    Araujo Julian
    Carter-Vickers Cameron
    Ebobisse Jeremy
    Farfan Marco
    Glad Justen
    Herrera Aaron
    Jones Derrick
    Klinsmann Jonathan
    Koreniuk Kai
    Lennon Brooks
    Lindley Cameron
    Maher Jack
    Marcinkowski James "JT"
    Michel Benji
    Mihailovic Djordje
    Ocampo Chavez Alfonso
    Olosunde Matthew
    Parks Keaton
    Perez Josh
    Pines Donovan
    Pos Lucas
    Reyna Giovanni
    Robinson Antonee
    Robinson Miles
    Rogers Sam
    Sabbi Emmanuel
    Sargent Josh
    Saucedo Sebastian
    Thomas Andrew
    Trusty Auston
    Vom Steeg Justin
    Weah Tim
    Williamson Eryk
    Wright Haji
    Yueill Jackson
    Zelalem Gedion
    Zubak Ethan

So, who wants to pick 20 (including 2 GKs) from this list only? I'm gonna semi-arbitrarily add a "no Sargent" rule here, since realistically of everyone here it's hardest to see him being on the qualifying roster.

I won't give you 20 yet but I am scratching my head at the lack of true wingers in the callups so far. It makes hardly any sense. We overload with stikers but only ever play one striker systems so we push them out wide where they aren't as good.

To take DMN up on his challenge, 20 from call-ups to date, and no Sargent:

    Ebobisse
    Weah — Aaronson — Saucedo
    Yueill — Jones
    Herrera — CCV — M. Robinson — Araujo
    Marcinkowski

    Bench:
Vom Steeg, Trusty, Glad, A. Robinson, Williamson, Mihailovic, Lennon, Perez, Sabbi

I don't actually think Jones is among the best two CMs, but after watching the USMNT and the US U-20s, I'm officially fanatical in the belief that there must be a real ball-winner on the field and Jones is the only call-up so far that fits the bill.

The wing options are weak after Weah and Saucedo. I was tempted to say f-it and go with Reyna.

Let's make a list of good-to-decent winger prospects by birth year. It'll be quick!

97: Lewis, Saucedo. Do we still have Akale believers out there?
98: Pulisic and a bunch of guys who are second-rate at best at this point
99: Amon, Fernandez (maybe a stretch to include him here) + the rotting corpse of Taitague's career
    00: ?? Carleton's final position & quality are uncertain.

So basically, if the early focus of the U23 cycle is mostly on the 97s and 98s, and Pulisic and Lewis are with the full NT, there just isn't much. I imagine that's why Lennon is listed as a forward in the current squad.

    Other guys:

97: Suarez, Jones (who might end up as a LB for the Revs)
98: Gaines, Lankford, Perez, Kunga, Young, A. Rodriguez
    99: Dorsey
    00: Hundley, Reyes, Mines

I don't think Carleton's best position is uncertain. He's a CAM, so doesn't apply to the winger discussion. His quality compared to the youth pool is not uncertain either IMO. His reputation within USSF is uncertain.

I would also put Hundley in that first category. I don't see what makes Fernandez any better other than him.

Bwana is another name that could go in the first or second category.

"Son, we think you can help us better as a fullback than a forward, so please switch positions, then we'll call you in as a forward two years later because we think you can help us better as a forward than a fullback."

I would like to see McCabe and Ferreira (if he already has citizenship) in the team.

Personally, I like the Hundley game, but after he signed with Colorado, his performance dropped notably (Maybe it's the fault of the Colorado coaches)
Although Fernandez is not technically better than Hundley, Omir is better than Hundley now because he is playing at a higher level and his performance is "good".

I understand your point, but when selecting players for a youth team, I don't regard form anywhere near as much as pure talent.

I haven't watched Hundley play with the Colorado reserves, but the stats aren't good, although I do think stats in USL for some of these young players are often very deceiving. They are definitely misusing him by making him a back up in their reserves. He shouldn't be a back up in the reserves no matter how bad he's playing. He's on a homegrown contract, and needs to develop.

Colorado Springs are a new affiliate for the Rapids, who switched from Charlotte. They clearly have established a decent working relationship, as many Rapids academy players have been showing up in the 18. However, is it clear that the Rapids have complete control over the coaching & lineups like Houston and RGVFC? If not, they'd have a harder time influencing whether Hundley starts or comes off the bench.

FWIW, Pepi's agent on IG said that he was originally called up to the US U23 camp but FCD wanted him for the Open Cup. That's at least three U17s who were called up to this camp.

Oops. I had him listed as a FW in my spreadsheet.

This is the YNT forum, so I imagine everyone can respect Spreadsheet Problems...

Indeed. I sometimes feel as if I'm maintaining 99 spreadsheets, though a listing of current prospects by position isn't one of them.

Is anyone really happy with this? Some interesting call ups but questionable defense and team dynamics.
