I saw a female player in a match recently--might have been an NWSL game--wearing a cast on her hand. I read that Van Es had surgery yesterday on her hand, and that the procedure went well. I'm sure she's got a cast of some kind on it now. Whether she will be able to play with it, I don't know--but I have to believe she and training staff will give it a try. I don't think there is a rule against wearing one, but whether she'd be effective wearing a cast and playing...we'll see. She frankly only has herself to blame as it was a reckless challenge, sorry to say.

Raque Rodríguez appeared to be wearing a cast on her wrist when SkyBlue played the Reign in Tacoma 2 weeks ago. Although when i saw her after the game it looked more like a brace -- perhaps it had a covering during the game.

My understanding is that the concern with casts, assuming the doctor has permitted the player to play with one, is safety for the other players. I think that concern is usually mitigated with bubble wrap or foam. At most amateur levels, the center ref makes the safe vs. not safe decision. I don’t know if there is specific guidance in the WC competition rules on the matter, but I would think for consistency, they would want to avoid making one person responsible for that decision. I wish for her to be able to play. And that it can be worked out. The metacarpals are the bones in the hand between the wrist and fingers, so are tougher to deal with than a broken finger bone.

Tks your insight. Yes, I can see where a player in a cast could quite inadvertently whack someone with her hand cast. I was hoping it was a finger fracture as opposed to a hand fracture, but apparently no such luck.

Watched The Netherlands--Australia game. Great crowd, good win and excellent sendoff for the Dutch, who were a bit shaky in the first 20 minutes but settled in after that and put three in the net while keeping the Aussies off the score sheet. Australia's high press bothered The Netherlands early on, and the Dutch struggled uncharacteristically to play the ball out of the back. They gave the ball the away a few times and had to defend a half dozen crosses into the box, but kept their composure.

Van de Sanden had enough action in this match for three games. The Aussies gave her too much room on the right flank and she tried to take advantage, though the lineswoman proved as difficult to beat as the opponents as she made what looked to be at least two if not more bad offside calls that thwarted Dutch counterattacking opportunities. Van de Sanden missed a header that could have been the opening goal, and also had a couple of poor crosses, but redeemed herself with a header into the net off a nice free kick by Spitse to open the scoring just before halftime. After Miedema scored a classy goal early in the 2nd half, Van de Sanden scored again, this time off of a corner kick, thumping a loose ball into the net. Final: The Netherlands 3, Australia 0.

The first half was very choppy and ragged, and the second half was more open and entertaining. I thought Van de Sanden, Bloodworth and Groenen were particularly good for the Dutch--Bloodworth mostly putting the clamps on Kerr. The Aussie star had a goal waved off on a clear offsides, and nearly scored off a corner header, but otherwise was pretty quiet in the game. The same could be said of Martens for the Dutch, as there was so much action on the right side of the field.

Van de Donk was her usual feisty self and seemed to spend half the game sprawled on the turf as she sought out and received contact pretty regularly. Van Lunteren was solid, as usual, and Van Dongen did a credible job as left outside back, coming in for the injured Van Es. Van der Gragt got a good 80' in, which she needed, and was dependable. She played centerback with Dekker in Euro17 but in this WC might play in place of Dekker, with Bloodworth holding down the other spot now. Van der Gragt has good size and decent athleticism, positions herself well, but is not very nimble or a great distributor of the ball, and is not all that fast; still, she's a bit of an upgrade over Dekker, IMO. Someone who can distribute the ball nicely out of the back is Bloodworth, who has a strong left foot and sprayed around some nice passes. One thing I expect to see in this WC is Bloodworth sending long diagonal passes down the right flank for the marauding Van de Sanden. That could be a weapon for the Dutch.

I read that Van Lunteren will not be playing for SC Freiburg next year. No word yet on where she'll be playing next. She is a very unheralded but reliable defender for the Dutch NT.

possibly the best pre toruney performance/or at least next to the US destruction of #20 Belgium, 6-0, but a lot of the other NT's tend to hold back till the WC. Got to hand it though, despite all the offside calls by that one linesman, the Orange kept going at their bread n butter, the long balls, which eventually paid off. Martens might of had the more quiet game, but she was marked better by the stronger of the two Matildas FB's, Carpenter. Van de Sanden seemed to have a lot of space to work with on the far right.
Got to wonder if the Orange can keep this kind of hectic pace for all possible seven games at the WC? As they seemed like tiring, late in the 2nd half & gave up a couple of yellow cards. Remember too, that the Matildas more direct, attacking style while bringing up their back line so high, is made to order for Wiegmann(as compared to an opponent thats more possession oriented or might bunker). But at least the team looked in superb conditioning & in Euro 2017 form. Give credit too for the shutout, Bloodworth looking world class at CB

The Dutch coaches will have to be smart about their substitutions--and of course it would be nice to have some two-goal leads so that you can get subs in games earlier rather than later. I think Van de Donk and Groenen, who are not big but involved in a lot of physical play, would certainly benefit from rest--as would the forwards, who do a lot of running. It is interesting that Van de Donk and Groenen are so scrappy and involved in a lot of physical challenges whereas I rarely see much physical play from the bigger Spitse. Look at the number of times in a game Van de Donk and Groenen are on the turf while Spitse is hardly ever on the turf. There is a reason why Spitse has got, what is it, like 160 caps?

Beerensteyn will probably get a fair amount of action; Roord too, if the Dutch can get ahead in games. That won't be so easy. I'm sure New Zealand is going to sit back a lot and will try to make it hard for the Dutch to get near goal, and Canada will be a tough nut to crack as well. Playing a high line against the Dutch is definitely playing into their hands given the talent of their forwards and ability of the others to get the ball to them quickly on counters.

Anyone speak touch? I'm curious what Van Es is saying in this interview, besides: "I feel good, and the full focus is on Tuesday."

  13. She said she has a small fracture in her hand and it was secured with bolts and a small metal plate. She's trying her best to be ready for the coming match.
The rest is chitchat about how she experienced the last few days, because of her injury.

Thanks, Feyenoord--appreciate it. Didn't think she'd need a screws and a plate, but glad to hear she's doing better. I assume that she'll start on-field drills with the team at some point soon, and the coaches will look at whether she can play freely, without fretting about her hand or the cast on her hand. That is assuming the doctors say that the risk of re-injuring the hand is small. She'd obviously need to get used to running around with the cast on her hand--which can't be easy psychologically, at least for a while--given that there is a lot of arm contact in football. In other words, can she play with the cast, first, and then, can she play /effectively/ with it? We'll wait and see and hope the answers are yes and yes. I thought Van Dongen was OK against Australia--not great but not bad, either--and I have to think there is a good chance she will start against New Zealand.

opponent wise; both Canada & NZ's best suit is their defense. NZ will bunker, whereas Canada's could possibly have the strongest back four line at the WC in Lawrence, Buchanen, Zardosky & Chapman. Not sure with Camaroon, just remember from last WC where htey could not hold a straight backline/or maybe just playing the out dated sweeper spot.

So I see that possibly the Orange not scoring as hefty in group play but probably/hopefully they can pick it up in the playoff matches

Agree on your points. Of course the key when playing a team that sits backs is to score a goal, get the lead, and that then will open up the game. Like you, i'm almost more confident when the Dutch play better teams that want to come forward.
