Dangerfield told me he is definitely a homer and doesn’t want to go against the local side (he works for) too much. He was right about blaming Vega for not holding or catching Acosta’s goal but it was a hard shot. Even though he was punching and not catching anything , Vega is still five times better than Tarbell who I’m sure few of us miss.
Totally happy to get the point. 4 pts on a two game road trip is not bad at all. Agree with Goodsport that this game was 4 quarters - good, good, bad, even. Before any of our subs my wife and I remarked that certainly we'll sub in Guram and Judson and defend the draw. First sub was Lopez for Marie and that made sense because Marie looked at least partly responsible for the goal and clearly wasn't doing well in the second half. The second and last sub was Hadji for Salinas and this was remarkable. Are we really going for the win? The way the second half had been going up to this point I was pretty convinced DCU would take the lead. Rooney can be dangerous with all those free kicks and Acosta was looking dangerous as well. However MA's plan nearly got us the win and I'm convinced the game changed with Hadji. We started having a little bit of offense at that point and a good offense is the best defense. DCU only used two subs as well. I heard that they were going to sub in Amarikwa and I was really hoping for that. He brings a bunch of crazy energy but usually nothing comes from it. I think both coaches were waiting to see who would score next before using their 3rd subs. Did Flo go through the concussion protocol? I'm worried about that guy. It seemed like he should've left the field to get checked out. Maybe that happened off camera.
[QUOTE="Dangerfield was pretty annoying at times today. On one play where a Hoesen shot was deflected by a DC defender who was falling on his rear end, the replay was pretty clear that it wasn't a hand ball. The game stopped for awhile, and the ref is obviously staring into space as he listens for a message as to whether a VAR review is going to be necessary. Dangerfield says something like "I'm not sure what they're doing... they really ought to take a look at that". What the **** do you think they were DOING all that time while the game was stopped, dipstick? They're already looking at it! Has anybody explained the VAR process to this guy?[/QUOTE] Dangerfield is terrible. They should bring back Dan Dibley.
DCU / Quakes recap is front page below the fold in the Washington Post sports section this morning, continuing inside with photos on both pages. Stanley Cup final game result is on last page (12) of the sports section. Proper prioritization, giving primacy to the local team.
I didn’t see evidence that they gave him much time to demonstrate his readiness to return to playing, and he looked a little woozy when he returned. You make a great point. I was (and am) worried about the guy too. This of course is not the first time he’s gotten his bell rung pretty hard. He may eventually get into Chad Marshall territory, and I’d say that’s dangerous territory in terms of his long-term health.
Mostly the Warriors, plus stuff like Serena Williams loses to Sofia Kenin at French Open, but her message was served Latest Quakes update is two weeks old.
I was very upset about this in the pbp. Yes, all that blood looked nasty, but scalp abrasions bleed profusely without any real danger, whereas there is usually no blood with a concussion. When you hear the crack of heads colliding, both players need to come out.
You can have scalp laceration and concussion at the same time. Worse case scenario would be traumatic subdural hematoma or subarachnoid hemorrhage which may not have immediate symptoms.
I think Vako earned another start with that type of defensive effort. He definitely adds another dimension to our attack that is missing.
Only one comment from the game for me... why has our defensive line suddenly giving a yard or two of room when ~20 yards from our goal? The goal against got initiated from that lack of closing the attacker down an there were WAY too many other examples that lead to dangerous moments. We need to start playing much tighter again.
No Quakes fan should ever pick up a copy of the Mercury News ever again based on sheer principle alone. They have completely ignored the home team through thick and thin and are a bunch of soccer haters who have absolutely no appreciation for the beautiful game. I canceled my subscription year’s ago after joining this forum and realizing from others who felt the same way just how hard they were working to pretend soccer in San Jose doesn’t exist.
I’m as happy as anyone that Wondo has gone on a goal scoring rampage lately but could his goal yesterday have been ruled offsides? @bsman, anyone?
It only looks that way because he turns DCU's defense completely inside out. If you look at the replay of his 151st goal in the 22nd second you can see that he starts the move while well onside behind his defender, then while the ball is in the air he moves between the defender and the goal, and then has to come back toward the ball in front of the defender. It is really impressive that he could put it on target while moving away from goal to get a ball served behind him. That's Wondo for you!
Yes, you are right on. It may look simple like a close range header but how he moved to that spot is incredible. It takes soccer wisdom, experience, skill, intuition, awareness, determination and hard work. Many would just hope for the ball sneaking past the defender. Instead, he dictated that duel and decided where he wanted to meet the ball. Classic Wondo goal. You can't write it off as luck or simple bad defending. This should be in the text book.
I hope Magnus is okay from his concussion but at this point I hope Matias realizes that a Vako who plays defense is a far more useful player than Magnus. I know it's limited minutes but Haji has really impressed me. I hope he gets to start the US open cup game to show what he can do over 90 minutes. I also feel pretty sure that he earned a penalty there at the end and in the one replay they showed for a second it looked like the defender got none of the ball. The shoving match between godoy and Rooney distracted the ref from potentially looking at VAR, to our detriment. Flo is my hero. I follow him on Instagram and he sure seems to love California. I hope he's here for a long time. Matias is awesome. I totally understand why he's a cult hero. that interview at halftime got me fired up. The ultras should eventually display a giant tifo of his visage after what I'm sure will be an awesome one for wondo at this next game. I feel like he is destined for a larger coaching job with a national team or in Europe at some point. I hope we are grooming some sort of eventual replacement that can continue on with his style. I love the style of soccer and I wouldn't be upset at all if we were trying to implement it into our youth ranks. The hard-working, blue collar style really fits the ethos of the club. Jacskon yuell has an engine in him. Stoked he got called up. He really helps us control the tempo of games and he does so much running off the ball. Vega has been a great pickup but I still feel like we can do better at keeper. He makes a ton of great saves but is also good for some sort of lapse per game and it cost us this time. Anyone who watches Reno consistently know if JT is anywhere close to being better than Vega?
I was wondering, has the emphasis in goalkeeping changed? Vega rarely catches the ball. It seems like more and more GKs are playing that way (besides the sweeper-keeper stuff).
I still dont. understand why we got rid of Quincy for a completely useless of oduro. I feel like Matias would actually love Quincy and he'd be a useful supersub under Almeyda
He may have gone more with Almeyda but I don’t think Quincy is better than Espinoza , Magnus or Vako. He will probably have had to change positions.
I always thought Urena would have worked well under Almeyda. Neither him or Quincy is likely to score a goal though. I think Cade Cowell will end up being just as effective with much more potential.
I'd take him over magnus. As a late game player I feel like he'd be a handful pressuring the opposing defense.
My guess would be that Amerikwa wanted to leave more than the Quakes were keen on getting rid of him. Comparing their age, output, and contract status, the trade didn't make much sense for the Quakes at all, unless it was to move somebody out of the team who really didn't want to be there. An addition by subtraction move, perhaps.
I would imagine that after the debacle last season between Stahre and Alashe, there were a lot of folks in the Quakes locker room who were hoping to be traded...
