From the Crew: Columbus Crew SC today announced that midfielder Federico Higuain will undergo Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstruction following an injury suffered during Crew SC’s road contest against the Colorado Rapids on May 25. Higuain is expected to be sidelined for the remainder of the 2019 season.
His career is most likely done. He should be a shoe in for the circle of honor. Sucks for a player’s career to end this way.
Yikes. Hate to hear this sort of news for a player. We love you, Pipa, we do. Please get better and enjoy retirement!
On a side note, this is the first time in team history when a player's knee surgery will not be done by Pete Edwards. But as my wife just said, Edwards isn't exactly going to go searching the phone book. His company employs something like 50 surgeons and I'm sure he can come up with someone reasonably competent.
Far be it from me to argue with you, but I've been at Orthopedic One a couple of times in the past week (thanks to my clumsy wife having wrist surgery) and unless there's another Dr. Edwards that isn't listed in their guide he's still doing surgeries and seeing patients - which I found odd because I remember an interview in which he said that he wasn't any longer.
Welp, I quite strongly dislike you, Sam Vines. It's gonna be real hard for you to make me ever love you.
The karmic re-balancing that this team is going through is after Saving the Crew last season is really quite a rollercoaster. While this team will be better in the long term without relying on Higuain so much, this is so not the way it should be happening. And it's going to be painful to watch it happen so abruptly. It has been coming at a much slower rate, but the thought that we have seen the last of the Maestro's magic in Black and Gold is enough to fill me with existential dread, on top of having to say goodbye to Zack. Only 90' minutes more of Zack and no more chances for Playoff Pipa to emerge out of nowhere. Ugh. If you pause it at the right moment, you can see when my heart breaks...
Bummer of a way to go out. I'll never forget how he began his time in Columbus. By the time he nailed two set pieces against the Revolution, I was convinced he would be a legend. I also enjoyed it when he decided he'd simply chip in goals against everybody. Fun times.
Pretty sure that part of his deal in part-owning the team means he cannot operate on team assets. Probably some MLS conflict-of-interest thing.
He actually did a friend's ACL surgery a few months ago. My friend was blown away when I told him that was the owner of the Crew. Pete is just legally not allowed to operate on his own players. Conflict of interest with what is best for the team versus what is best for the players.
Ah, I understand now. He's still practicing, just not on players. I'm dense sometimes, please forgive me.
I don't recall him saying that he was giving up cutting. But he did say that he wouldn't be surgerizing Crew players. EDIT: just saw Timon's response above. I don;t know whether MLS would have a rule on this, but ethically as well as legally, you just can't do it.
Of course he doesn't practice on the players...he hones his skills on regular Joes before cutting on a player. Once again, I'll see myself out.
Unfortunately, the previous ownership let the Ring of Honor thing mostly die on the vine. As a result, we're way behind. There are six-to-ten guys lined up who clearly should be there, and Pipa will have to go to the end of the line.
Doc is doing my daughter's ACL surgery (tore it in a game last weekend - F'ing ref was letting nasty fouls go and wa la my kid gets drug down with 2 min left in damn game ). She had heard about Pipa yesterday when she went in for her MRI & surgery consult. I scolded her for not telling me last night! She insists she'll be back playing before him. She's probably right...he might not be back.
Yeah, don't know about the MLS part, but it does bring up thorny issues generally, which is why he stopped cutting Crew players.
