    SAUDI ARABIA

    FIFA U-20 World Cup record

Previously featuring in eight editions of the FIFA U-20 World Cup, Saudi Arabia'a best performances came when they reached the second round at Colombia 2011 and Korea Republic 2017. The Saudis bowed out of the first round in their debut back in 1985 and they had similar fortunes in the next five participations before their improved record in their last two editions.

    The road to Poland
The Saudis had a solid and strong performance in the 2018 AFC U-19 Championship, finishing on top of group D with a perfect record before defeating Australia 3-1 in the quarter-finals. After securing their place in Poland 2019, they edged Japan in the semi-finals and then Korea Republic in the final to win their third continental title.

    The coach
A former player at Al Oyoon FC in the lower divisions of Saudi football, Khaled Atawi started his coaching career at the youth teams of his former club before he took helm of the first team. He was appointed as the Saudi Arabia U-19 team coach in 2016 and had quick success after winning the 2016 Youth Gulf Cup before leading the team to the 2018 AFC U-19 Championship.

    The stat
    8
    - The number of the different Saudi players who successfully scored goals in the 2018 AFC U-19 Championship. The top scorer of those players was Turki Al-Ammar, who scored four goals and was chosen as the MVP of the tournament after leading his side to their ninth appearance in the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Hopefully, the lads will go past the group stage and deep into this tough competition.

2-0 to France, the expulsion around min 10 had greatly effected, but there are still 6 points left to go and bounce back.

4-3 to Mali, the team lacks discipline and consistency, poor defence and to many frustrating individual errors. The coach took responsible for the loss, however, the failures of this team cannot be placed solely on the coach.

I dont blame these young players, who did their best - IMO if we want success at the international level. we need to completely refurbish our players development system.

We have been talking about this since ages now :)

But still good to see we have the local coaches now at the youth level - Khaled Atawi, Saad Al Sehri & other coaches are doing great job. Even if the performance is not upto the mark, they need to stay on the ground and look for talent's.
