I thought Chrome OS was nerfed Linux. Android was nerfed Linux. Separate nerfing. Linux is a Unix lookalike with a restrictive "free" license (ask Tivo). Mac is nerfed BSD Unix. Apple bought Clang to not use Gnu compilers (see Tivo).

Google is well known for its slogan... Don't be evil, except on Windows and Apple.

Ten years ago, I would go to my favorite hole in the wall Mexican joint and get the lunch special: three tacos, rice and beans and a can of pop for four dollars. Today, the tacos are street tacos and cost 2.75 each while customers bitch about no wifi. Do I blame millennials, hipsters or Gen Z?

Tots never were that great. It was Rust Belt cafeteria food that would show up at kids birthday parties now and then. They seem to show up on menus today but let's be honest there's no reason. Millenials, Gen Z or hipsters?

Asian fusion bowls are a weird thing. Veggies, protein and sauce over rice. I'm not sure what is being fused especially when the sauce is curry or teriyaki out of a jar but if you call it fusion plenty of Mac Books appear. Gen Z, hipsters or millenials?

They both are built on the kernel, but have non-Gnu userland. ChromeOS's front end is just a Chrome browser window with a couple of bits grafted on.

Linux Is Not UniX. It's a Unix-like kernel, licensed under the Gnu Public License V2, but does not necessarily require a Gnu userland (but for the purposes of discussion, almost always does, along with mostly-free other userland stuff of various sorts under other licenses).

It's a modified BSD kernel (the whole reason they used BSD is because the Berkeley license does not require (any?) contributions back upstream, thereby allowing them to claim the entire thing as their own "invented here" kernel and so they alone could control it) with a highly nerfed semi-GPL, semi-not userland.

Yep. And so they could avoid requirements to push any improvements upstream.

    Google can go ******** themselves.

*Insert old timey nostalgic comedy music*
Back in my day you could buy a candy bar and a sodey pop with a dime and still have change left over.

    Anywho.....

You personally hate that time moves forward, inflation, and wage stagnation. How is that the fault of millennials, hipsters, or gen z?

You personally hate fried potatoes. How is that the fault of millennials, hipsters, or gen z?

You personally hate asian food. How is that the fault of millennials, hipsters, or gen z?

I don't understand how the word street in front of tacos drives the price up and draws such a different crowd. Silly Kyle misses the point.

I love fried potatoes. Tots peaked at Woodland Elementary and should have stayed there.

I love Asian food. I'm not sure why the Americanized Chinese place that serves protein, veggies and jarred sauce over rice is ridiculed while the exact same ingredients served in a bowl and called fusion is a trendy culinary experience.

Of course, these things will pass and end up in the same bin as cupcakes, flavored vodkas and popcorn stores with fifty flavors. You still owe me beer.

About taco, trucks, food and whatnot, this may be of interest:

    https://cmhgourmand.com/2019/03/04/...ucks-columbus-ten-years-later/#comment-124493

Of course, my followup question is whether you can still find hole-in-the-wall Mexican (or whatever) places to grab a quick, cheap, satisfying meal. Is the argument that taco (or whatever) trucks have driven them all out of business? I mean, who cares what the hip trendsetters are paying and eating if gramps still has access to his favorite spot, right?

Because I'm pretty sure hole-in-the-wall places still exist, you just have to seek them out. For example:

Where in the hell do you guys live that you can’t find a hole in the wall Asian or Mexican restaurant? They are on nearly every street. And nobody has been able to fill up on tacos for $4 unless they’re going to Taco Bell.

Tots are a nostalgia food, reminiscent of the best part of a bad school lunch. But, as a fried potatoes go, they are at least consistent and reasonably good. Most places have tots that resemble the Or-Ida ones served in school cafeterias. The worst you can do to them is under cook them, and then they are still more or less edible.

French fries on the other hand, range from God's gift to man to a mushy mess. For me, the prototype fry is a double fried russet. See Alton Brown's Good Eats or America's Test Kitchen. The worst thing, in my opinion, that you can do to a fry is coat it in batter. There are exceptions, but most of them are bad. But, it seems the batter dipped ones are mostly commercial made. I'm not sure why a non-fast food place wouldn't go to the trouble of cutting and frying their own potatoes for their French Fries. You can cut the potatoes and do the first fry ahead of time. Five Guys is an example.

Too many places undercook their fries. They come out as mushy white sticks. Fries should be golden brown, and fluffy on the inside. If they aren't, I'd rather have the tots.

From these, I'm to draw that IT people/programmers/engineers, despite their knowledge and skill set, don't use a lot of tech in their everyday lives.
Interesting. I am keen for a little elaboration on this. (i.e. why?)

Bringing this SH!TSHOW back on track, it looks like PSV goes in front of city council on 6/6 for zoning, site plan, and permit approval.

At this stage, I can't imagine any reason it wouldn't move forward.

No, we just use technology that isn't vulnerable and/or spying on us.

People who actually understand the technology know how dangerous it can be. I would venture that the more knowledgeable, experienced engineers who work on shit at Google, Bookface, Apple, etc. stay very far away from the products they make.

...and hey, you ever gonna get back to me on that PM from months ago? ;)

Not true. There are of plenty of great taco places in Vegas where a taco can be found for a dollar or under. None of these places call themselves street food and the crowd is not as hip. I just find it weird that calling something street and jacking up the price is popular amongst a certain segment while defeating the purpose of what is described as street food.

I don't know much about the Columbus food scene so I can't comment.

Yes I do and I am fine with La Loma. It's a long way to go for tacos.

Any other suggestions for Mexican food?

There's a taqueria on Main also. Mi Casa (South Plaza) is serviceable. Outsiders seem to hate El Rincon, but it's loved by many here. I've heard great things about Uncle Tito's in Springfield (in the former Mariachi Loco spot - they got raided by ICE several years ago), but haven't been yet.

For some reason we have much Thai food. Ramen is happening more. Bhutanese/Nepali food is everywhere (mostly North Hill), but I have no specific recommendations.

There is a difference between vulnerable and spying on us. One is and act of negligence, the other (at least as it seems to be used in this context) is an active attempt to use data outside the scope of use that we initially provided it to the web site for.

Vulnerable means that the site you are accessing has security flaws that haven't been fixed. Pretty much everything is vulnerable because most of the software the sites run on have issues/feature/bugs.

    https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/exploits_of_a_mom.png

This is an example of bad coding leading to a vulnerability. There are other vulnerabilities that expose your data to third parties. They also are the result of sloppy coding, or decisions made by the site you are accessing.

Spying is ubiquitous. If you are using the internet, you are exposing data to third parties. Those third parties are sharing that data with other parties wanting to put ads on your screen, or worse. This is why we get ads for French fries when we Google "French fries".

As a side note, one of the engineers at Google on Alexa is a friend of a friend (former MS, current bookface tools developer). She said that Alexa only stores 30 seconds on voice data due to storage constraints. The searches themselves might be cached with your Google search history, but that isn't any different than any other Google search you do.

So, in general, if you can choose to use the internet, realize that what you put out there is out there forever, and likely to be seen by people you may not want it seen by. Hopefully, this is a surprise to no one.

It also should by a surprise that this is nothing new. Phone books have been around for generations. Also, Polk city directories. Property appraisers files. It's just a little easier to get and search the data today.
