Balcer played left forward or left wing last weekend. So, if Rapinoe come back this weekend and plays left winger as usual, what position will Balcer play? My guess is that Balcer will be a sub for Rapinoe for the foreseeable future.

I googled around trying to find out if there was a specific event that started Balcer wearing the Full 90 head protection. I didn’t succeed. I did see some game photos from the Seattle Sounders and Grand Rapids FC without it, but in pretty much every shot from her senior year at SAU she has it on.

I spoke to her about it after the Orlando game when we awarded her the Reignmaker 'player of the match' pin. She said she started wearing it very young, but not due to an injury, and has always played with it. She likes it but was chuckling about it too because she knocked heads with Krieger during that match. (An unknown rook going up against the immovable object that is Ali Kreiger!!! I like this kid.)

She said, "Unfortunately it came off before i hit that girl."

(I watched the play in slow mo, it looks to me like the helmet comes off because they knock heads, not after.)

She showed it to me and handed it to me to feel it; i thought it would be like a beanbag, but it was solid plastic. AND It had a Reign crest on it!!!

Well it turns out to be very good that Vlako worked so hard to sign a quality third keeper to a full season contract, because before even joining the team Murphy has become the starter. Now we need a backup.

The injury to Betos looked bad. She was driven off the pitch on the back of a Gator -- she smiled and waved, but Vlakto said she would "miss a significant amount of time"

Murphy was in the stands for the SkyBlue match with other Reign players who weren't in the 18 person gameday roster.

What do you mean by "I didn't think to look with Rumi"? Was Rumi on the standings?

On Nadeshiko Japan thread we were wondering why she didn't play the last match and she wasn't even listed on the bench: I hope no injury involved, since she's instrumental to Japan's team for the World Cup.

Yes, Utsugi was in street clothes in the stands. She had her hand bandaged. I talked to her briefly, wished her well in France, but did not ask about it. I heard from other fans that it was a kitchen injury -- i can't vouch for that 100% since i didn't hear it from her. It didn't look bad enough to effect her World Cup.

Thank you. We're going to make sure that in France there will be someone cooking for her, so she won't risk other incidents! :giggle:

Reign Goalkeeper woes continue. Two weeks ago we rostered in the 18 two GK with combined zero NWSL minutes. (Murphy is turning out extremely good by the way!) Now temporary backup Scout Watson is out with a concussion suffered in training, so an amateur backup is brought in to back up the amateur backup keeper. Reign sign Kori Butterfield to a National Team replacement contract.

    Reign FC player moves:

    1. Traded MF Elise Kellond-Knight to Washington for GK Sammy Jo Prudhomme

    2. Signed DF Schuyler DeBree

    3. GK Lydia Williams to 45-day DL, released NTRPs FW Maegan Kelly and MF Erin Yenney

With Betos (achilles) and Scout Watson (concussion) on SEI, and Ld.Williams => DL, Reign needed a 2nd GK to back up Murphy. (That's a lot of GKs ) Kellond-Knight wasn't getting minutes in MF, dunno why.

I hope DeBree brings some youthful pace to Reign's backline, which sorely needs it. Kelly was serviceable as an attacking sub (preferred over Dallstream).

It seems like Vlatko has continued his Reign predecessor's role as NWSL Roster Manager In Chief! X-D

We have made so many roster moves this week I went to the team website to track. From today:

    1. Steph Cox signed. She has done a great job, glad she is sticking around.

    2. Addison Steiner signed as a supplemental player for the rest of the season. I am pumped for this KC kid. Even though prob came from her former club team teammate and KC kid Jaycie Johnson being put on the SEI list :(

    3. Am I crazy??? The Reign lists New Zealand international Rosie White on their website. I thought she was with Chicago. She’s been retweeting Reign FC stuff though. Did I miss this announcement?

    It is quite surprising.
Chicago let her sign overseas which released their rights, as i understand it.
What i find baffling is where the international slot will come from.
One possibility, and this is just wondering, trading Kellon-Knight opened up a slot.
I assumed, and i think i read, that Quinn, signed yesterday, would take that slot.
But Quinn is Canadian first team, and would be allocated if she had not started the season overseas, so perhaps through that loophole she doesn't need a slot and White will occupy the second half of the season of Kellon-Knight's slot.

But if they both need a slot, by my count we are short.

Rumi got her green card so that opened up a slot.

Oh, really? How does it work exactly? Players with a green card don't count as international? And how much does it normally take to get it?

Green cards take five years to get, I believe? And yes, NWSL doesn't count green card holders against the international limit.

The green card case is the same for the Thorns' Caitlin Foord and I believe, more recently, for the Thorns' Hayley Raso.

A Green Card, or Lawful Permanent Resident Card, enables a foreigner to move to the USA and live here permanently, work in any job, and have a subset of Social Security earnings, voting privileges, and military job openings. Also, it's on the path to citizenship. They take years to obtain through work or via family sponsorship, or you can win an annual lottery. Once obtained, they last a lifetime (although the card itself needs renewal every 10 years, just like a passport).

Green card holders are essentially equal to U.S. citizens for any civilian jobs not explicitly restricted. (Most military/DoD/government jobs require full citizenship, which means you're competing against fewer whiz kids :D) So they don't count as internationals in any corporate environment (including pro sports leagues) that distinguishes between work visas and citizens.

Also true for Fishlock and Taylor as well for the Reign, which is why we can have so many "internationals" on our team with only 4 international slots. We should free one up in the offseason if/when Quinn gets allocated by Canada now that she's back in the league.

What I don't get is: how soccer players get it so "easily", compared to other people? Fishlock, Taylor, Utsugi... Are you telling me they had all the requested number of years in USA to obtain the green card? Or there are "fast tracks" for athletes to get it? :cautious:

I don't know about Utsugi, who is in her 4th year in the States. Fishlock is in her 7th; and Taylor is in her 6th. Plus Taylor went to Oregon State University.
