Overall this is the week I realized: these increased midweek games are really going to take their toll, and it would probably be miraculous to just hold steady in attendance this year. 100% agree on this. I've realized this is why I used to watch so many Houston games, and why I don't watch nearly as many now.
Columbus had beautiful weather yesterday. 13K is pretty good for a Wednesday night match. People weren't sure if Zlatan would play or even travel since LAG are in the midst of 3 games in 8 days. But it was the return of GBS so long time fans wanted to see him. The Crew has introduced visiting players and coaches in the past but not this year so the crowd didn't get a chance to applaud Guille the way we did with Sigi in 2009 or 10. Crew's home schedule is so front loaded into crappy weather that we probably won't show a big improvement in attendance this year but we should have some sellouts later in the year. The FCC match will sell out for sure.
BRB, gonna amuse myself with a quick perusal of all those "THEM DAWGS SHOULD BE IN THE PLAYOFF" takes. BTW, here is the SEC's DOMINANT bowl record for the last few years: 2018-19: 6-6 2017-18: 5-6 2016-17: 6-7
Interesting that La Liga has a guideline about where fans sit to make the stands seem full Flexibility in 75% of the stands LaLiga believe that perception is key when it comes to how full a stadium appears and have therefore asked their clubs to ensure the majority of fans are positioned in view of the TV cameras.
This seems like common sense and I have always wondered my more MLS teams don't try harder to do this.
Maybe it's not just a MLS thing. Interest in sports is cyclical. Anyone remember the 80s? Bill Madden: Baseball's got big problems and the weather isn't one of them
The cameras are usually on the west side of the stadium to avoid glare. More fans prefer to sit on that side too for the same reason. The Crew price their east side seats slightly less than the west and I'd imagine other teams do that as well.
Who cares about the eyeballs and sunburned skin of the fans at the game. I only care about what it looks like to me on TV Sounds like a good way to sell hats, sun glasses and sunscreen in the stadium. Stop bringing logic into my brilliant idea. Or they could just build every stadium with a East/West orientation so the majority of fans are either looking North or South. Who cares about the players on the field being able to see. There are only 22 of them. Many more in the stands and watching on TV...well in Chicago it is about the same.
Hoping for a good number out of Colorado this weekend. They've been promoting 2-packs of this game and an Arsenal ticket. They had a special deal they sold to Colorado Springs Switchbacks supporters for those two games as well.
I know we don't discuss butts in seats here, but this is getting ridiculous. Expect a 10K+ "official" attendance at Dallas when there is not even 5K
I thought the heavy sun and lack of roof was the issue in Frisco. Now it's 60 degrees with shadow at 2pm in a saturday and that is also an issue. Goal by the way.
You didn't notice all the rain gear being worn by the coaches, the field staff, and some of the fans?
yeah, weather is not perfect, it almost never is, but it is far from bad for a saturday 2pm game. It's actually very good for soccer. By the way I´m not picking it on FC Dallas, it just happens to be the game I'm watching on TV right now. We can bury our heads in the sand all we want and discuss the fake "official" attendances all we want and pretend the league is doing great. We can keep pretending some games are "sell outs" when you can clearly see 20% of the seats empty. But for a league that still doesn't draw well on TV and is still very dependant on game tickets, things are not going good so far this season. Realizing there is a problem is the first step.
It's not entirely true, but for the most part, teams don't care about butts in seats if the seats are sold.
Well thankfully most tickets are sold. The STHs just aren't turning out. Colorado made $18 million in revenue in 2017 when they lost $6 million but Forbes valued them at $155 million.
