Perhaps the pressure is playing a bit of a factor in this. There are many things going on at the same time. Betis was competing for a Euro spot at one point in the season and now they're fighting to stay within the top ten. The team is not looking so good. Same players, but they just aren't coming together like they once were. Setien is going to be less inclined to field a young player when so much is at stake, including his job.
Finally caught up on all the games. The one thing that seems to stick out is that he goes for the dribble on most of his plays. It’s as if someone told him that he’ll be alright as long as he dribbles. It’s perplexing. Sometimes his dribble attempts slow down a counter and give the opponent time to get back into place. Sometimes the dude has two open players to pass to and losses the ball trying to go through two guys. The guy doesn’t even look up on some plays. His saving grace is that he’s young and learning in a top euro league. I still maintain that Ajax would’ve been better for learning the fundamentals, even if he doesn’t play. It’s hard to blame Setien for benching him though. Hope Betis teaches him to use his teammates more and be more team-oriented. He’s still young and promising, though we have to look at his current situation without the rose-tinted glasses. Lainez played himself onto the bench.
In my opinion it is more of Setien's style of play that has benched Lainez. They are possession based team that have no creativity in the final third. They consistently have 60 - 70% of the ball and only a handful of shots on goal. You never see any 1 2s. Just a lot of passing that amounts to nothing. Well they usually cross it but then what is the point of all the passing. It's really frustrating seeing them play. When Lainez has played he offers something different holds on to the ball and gives a chance for his team mates to make runs and open up the defense. Sure he doesn't pass it to an open teammate a lot of the time but when that other guy is just going to pass it backwards isn't it worth giving Lainez a chance to do something just as good. I have noticed that when Lainez or Jesse dribble and end up in good positions none of the other players try to link up or make a run they all just stay in their positions offering nothing. With all that said today's game against Valencia showed Lainez is doing more of what Seitien wants and consequently lost the ball less. So I could definitely see your side but I don't think he was so bad he benched himself. It was more he didn't understand what Setien's style was so he got benched. I also think he should have gone to Ajax. Betis isn't a world class youth producer.

Betis getting smoked by relegation candidate Levante. They're not that far off from the relegation zone themselves. Lulz should have gone to Ajax.
Lol They have a 9 point gap. Look at the standings. Anyway I hope Setien gets the boot. This team needs a new coach
Lulz you were probably one of those choose Betis over Ajax duses. They're safe but like I said not far off.

Better to face adversities in a top league early in your career than to stay comfortable for a couple years in a average two horse race league. Once Lozano moves to Napoli (same club that a former Betis player moved to) maybe people will start to realize that going to PSV/Ajax isn't all that it's made out to be.

What the hell happened to this team? I remember when people were talking about this Setien guy as being some sort of genius. He's looking like Paco Jemez. At least he finally sat that maleta Jesé.
Setien is the Spanish Tuca, at least that's how his critics that are Real Betis fans see him, which there's a lot of them, from what I've seen at their forum, since the day Lainez joined.
I'm sorry but this whole post is ignorant. Tell this to Ronaldo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Luis Suarez, Christian Eriksen and every great Dutch player who came from Eredivisie... As it pertains to young, talented players, people place way too much emphasis on the level of the league and hardly any on the level of coaching/instruction and institutional footballing philosophy. Nevermind the fact that these leagues don't face the same pressure and therefore players can develop without the normal pressures and hindrances of stronger league... If the level of the league was that important, Netherlands, Belgium and Portugal wouldn't produce the players they have been producing on a consistent basis. It's because those players are allowed to learn and hone their skills with top notch coaching/instruction albeit in less competitive leagues that they continue to punch above their weight...
I say Mexican players go to Spain, two years then you’re no longer going to hinder a bigger clubs non-eu spots.
Yeah some great players have come out of that league, but the fact that the last high profile transfer before the De Jong and De Ligt transfers was Eriksen back in 2013 kinda proves my point. The problem is that people have been acting like La Liga doesn't develop players. How many players from mid table La Liga clubs could you find transferred to top teams in the past 5 years? I would imagine quite a few, just take Real Betis for example, Dani Ceballos went to Madrid and Fabian Ruiz went to Napoli and Junior Firpo, Mandi, and Lo Celso are rumored to go to top teams. I'm not saying that going to PSV or Ajax is bad, but I'm not convinced that they are the fastest route to a better club for Mexican players. History has shown us that Mexicans that do well in the Eredivisie move to mid table teams. Sure, Lozano might be the exception, but so far the club pushing hard for him is Napoli, the same club that Fabian Ruiz went to when he only had one season playing regularly compared to Lozano's two years with PSV. I mean I don't disagree with any of this but there's a massive difference between getting developed at 13-14 years old and coming up from their football culture compared to getting there at 18 (soon to be 19). Am I supposed to believe that Lozano has improved that much with PSV? He's scored more goals for sure, but I haven't seen anything from a technical standpoint that makes me think that he would've been worse off going to Spain.
Nope. Sanchez went to Totally Hotshits last season. Eriksen even isnot on this list from Voetbal International:
