That's weird, there aren't any major elections coming up in the USA.

Since Trump is a very stupid man, I doubt that he foresaw that it might not be so unpopular in those cities as he might've thought.

So a Wingnut militia in NM just went ahead and rounded up approx 300 migrants. The governor is telling then to stand down.

New Mexico’s governor has ordered a right-wing militia to stand down and stop illegally holding migrants — often at gunpoint ― in her state.

“Regular citizens have no authority to arrest or detain anyone,” Michelle Lujan Grisham said Friday.

I say bring the immigrants to our sanctuary cities, and lets see if they help or hurt the economy. I'm betting on the former, and it's also the humanitarian thing to do. I believe it would result in a good outcome, even though Trump wants to do it for all the wrong reasons.

Why not? I'm 100% sure already that they're a net positive for society. I always go back to a 2016 NYT arficle that showed that Latino immigrants rescued small towns in Iowa (cracker Steve KKKing's district) that were quickly going down the shitter. Working hard at meatpacking plants & farms & raising their families like...'Mericans.

I don't get it. Why didn't the Gov send in the NG instead of complaining about it? There was a large group of unauthorized guys with auto rifles illegally detaining people at gunpoint. What, if any, responsibility does the Border Patrol have? This stinks!!!!

That shit has been happening since early/mid 2000s. When I was living in Tucson, there were the Minuteman ********sticks.

I do believe that Individual One thinks they really are drug dealers and otherwise criminals, at least most of them. He is just so clueless.

He's being cynical for political reasons, but of course he knows better. His properties have been hiring undocumented workers all along. In fact, he probably wants to send some to Los Angeles because his golf club needs to hire.

    Damn shame

SUNLAND PARK, N.M., April 24 (Reuters) ― The leader of an armed group that spent the past two months detaining migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border, drawing condemnation from civil liberties advocates, has been hospitalized after he was attacked in jail, his attorney said.

Larry Hopkins, 69, was in a hospital with broken ribs after being attacked on Tuesday at the Dona Ana County Detention Center in Las Cruces in southern New Mexico, attorney Kelly O’Connell said

It would result in a good outcome because it's the right thing to do. What it does to the economy is neither here nor there.

Of course it's the right thing to do.

But, don't underestimate the importance of a good economy and of our contribution to it. Many immigrants - including myself - chose to come here precisely because of the economic opportunities that the US has to offer. In fact, while some people do come to the US looking for liberty and escaping persecution, it's still a minority. I would argue that the best asset the US has in order to attract immigrants is its economy. And the fact that as immigrants we are able to contribute to a dynamic economy is what makes it a win-win situation. Altruism is not the only reason to welcome the immigrants with open arms.

That's what the Trumpistas don't understand.

There has been a lot of talk about this town in Iowa:

    https://www.saveur.com/iowa-refugee-meatpacking-town

As the New York Times reports in a recent feature, the town of Storm Lake—a longtime meatpacking town sitting smack in the middle of Trump’s America (Trump won the state with approximately 52% of the vote to Clinton's 42%)—has become a surprising magnet for wave after wave of immigrants and refugees from Asia, Africa, and Latin America over the past four decades, a phenomenon that has kept the town growing in a state where two-thirds of counties are shrinking in population. These relative newcomers are drawn by the low-paying, labor-intensive jobs at pork, egg, and turkey processing plants owned by Tyson Foods.

These jobs were once lucrative, complete with benefits and union protection, and taken by mostly white men. But those days ended in the mid-80’s: with competition from newer companies that supplied large supermarkets, many of Iowa’s smaller plants started slashing wages, ignoring union demands, and ultimately shuttering.

As one longtime worker tells the Times, the $16 hourly wage that he earned when he started in 1980—the equivalent of almost $50 today, after inflation—was enough for one breadwinner to support a family while also owning a home, some cars, a camper, and a boat. And despite every promise to “bring jobs back to America,” rural towns across the country continue to witness a massive brain drain, with younger residents flocking to the cities leaving behind elderly folks and empty futures.

While the Storm Lake model isn’t perfect, it’s one option to address the growing tide of small-town drains. Nearby towns, such as Spencer, Iowa chose to reject similar attempts by a packing plant to recruit foreign workers, while Denison, Iowa chose to adopt the model, seeing a two-fold increase in its Latino population in fewer than 10 years.

Speaking to the Times, Storm Lake’s police chief concedes that such drastic changes in the town came with their own share of problems over the past three decades—including complaints of crime and drugs—but he tells the paper, “the pros so outweigh the cons, and the community as a whole understands that, and for the most part, they’ve embraced it.

They understand (perhaps incorrectly ;)) that to enjoy the US's economy, those immigrants/refugees will be "Takin' Der Jerbs"
