Jesse Gonzalez goalkeeping masterclass in Atlanta today. Opportunity knocks for Crew to put more distance between them and Atlanta.
You sure?? Folks used to think Toby Charles was at the games when he did Soccer Made in Germany (and the English First Division, as it was in those days) for Deutsche Welle. He wasn't.
He made an utterly mundane speech about how it's time MLS took the brakes off, removed the training wheels (pick your favorite worn out cliche) and made.the owners.compete, with an eye towards promotion/ relegation He says it wouldn't be a case of the haves and the have nots but rather " the haves and the have mores" whatever that means. He loves acting like hes on the cutting edge, brash, unconventional, a thought leader when.in reality he never says anything that we haven't been reading on BS for over a decade. He works.so hard at being relevant when in fact that's just about the last thing he is
1) I thought this was going to be about his comments regarding USAvMex and Columbus (he effectively said the game should go elsewhere until Columbus' new stadium is ready and then come back here). 2) Don't we agree with Lalas in that it's time to open up the spending? Maybe not all the way, but definitely give owners more ability to spend as they want. 3) Alexi is really good at being the guy with trendy yet unpopular opinions. I kind of admire his commitment to being the villian. Kind of.
1) No one cares what he says about Columbus anymore. 2) First apply the rules fairly then worry about spending. 3) No he is not. He is a corporate stooge pretending to be a villain. He's the soccer commentator version of an Ace of Base comeback.
Dang, y'all have strong feelings about the guy. I have a theory that some people in the Crewniverse only hate him because he said honest things about the Columbus soccer market 18 months ago, and hasn't ever jumped on the Anthony PRecourt Hate Train, but surely this slice of the core fanbase has better reasons to dislike an American Soccer Hall of Famer, relentless champion of MLS, man who brought David Beckham to the States (and could be considered the Father of MLS 2.0) and rock music aficionado. I kind of like him. Twellman, too.
Before all the AP crap, before we lost to Mexico at CCS, that Ginger asshole wanted the mexico game moved.
Among the strangest things in my life, I managed to play against many (some may be a more accurate word choice here) of the players on the 1994 USMNT as a kid. This list includes Lalas. He was way better than me and everyone else on the field. He was a dick back then. As far as I’m concerned he’s never changed.
I wouldn't argue with him too much on the USA - Mexico. If there is even an actual competitive match between now and the new stadium opening. Non-competative matches were never here anyway. Opening up purse-strings = good Completely pulling them off = bad (The indians do a decent job of competing with NYY and the Red Sox, but they have to work a lot harder at it and most smaller markets do not compete well at all. I don't want that with MLS) Promotion / relegation = never ever ever going to happen.
A. He was routinely mocked in these parts well before the attempt to steal the team away to Austin. 2. He didn't say "honest" things. He parroted MLS and PSV talking points. Some of them may have been factually correct, but many times were dishonest in context and D. He actively championed MLS2ATX. I'm fine with him thinking (wrongly) that Austin would be a good city to have a team in. But MLS2ATX was PSV's astroturf campaign, not a grassroots Austin campain for a team. So he was actively supporting the planned move.
When it comes to announcing/reporting, never really been a Lalas guy but I have always liked Twellman. Not sure the reasoning. Both are full of hot takes, but I think Twellman is better at analyzing the current game. I tend to find myself agreeing with his analysis.
Listen to him on American Fiasco (podcast about the 98 World Cup) and you can hear from it from himself what a big whiny crybaby he was/is.
Are you sure that he didn't just say that he wanted it moved in order to get under the skin of basically the entire USMNT fanbase (outside of Seattle)?
I ran into Twellman at CMH once. He was sitting at the terminal. I said good morning and mentioned I was a the Crew game last night (obviously why he was there). He was a total douche "I don't have time for this" asshole.
