I agree with this. Flo is definitely better suited for man marking as he's both more mobile and he reads the game well...

I'm still alive with a new account because I lost the login and had to create a new one. I make it to every game and mostly lurk on here. Need to be more active.

I wonder if that was just the general Jekyll and Hyde nature of Godoy or if it’s a clue that when he Judson, he just figured Judson will do the hard work and Godoy can coast.

So I'm not alone with my J&H theory? :) Anyway, you may have a point there. Judson being younger and a guy that covers so much ground. But I also think Godoy's attitude hinges significantly on our fortunes in any given game. When things go bad, he pouts, gets lazy (or shall I say lazier), and tries to get into the edgy/nasty/victim thing. Yellows are almost a given. The way this game played out, he looked like Jeckyll, and I don't remember seeing any of the usual edgy physical stuff (not even when Guzmán was getting into the back and forth stuff with Yueill).

And all of it, the bands you mention, are dog shit. Through no talent of my own I was born at a time when Who's Next would be be released as I was in high school. I give thanks for this nearly as much as pulling #353 in the final year of the 5 year USA induction draft lottery...so I didn't have to navigate the last of Viet Nam. I am further blessed that the *anthem* bands of my youth were not crap such as AC/DC.

alexis you are cool and a long time contributor. I made my case in blunt terms. You likely feel disrespected. It's not personal.

I know every season has its own history and all but beating Portland the way they did on paper anyway, actually looks pretty good. I mean the Timbers finished 5th in the west last season and was the MLS Cup Runner-up just last December. That is a pretty good result for them. They may be experiencing problems so far this season but I can't imagine they are worse off than the Quakes are or were.

Thinking it over more, this win could actually be an eye opener and confidence builder for the Quakes.

it's never personal when it comes to music, who cares what you like or don't like? different strokes. different folks. AC/DC and Metallica are two of the biggest bands in the world, selling out huge arenas wherever they go (or in the case of AC/DC, went). The Who are great too, Roger and Pete still get around and can belt out a tune...point is, we've had a tradition with some of this music, some of us have really appreciated that.

5-10 minutes into the game I knew the Quakes were going to win. They just looked different and Portland was not pressing. Danny made a huge difference with ability to make runs behind Portland. Espinoza was MOTM with an assist and goal. Loved that he was making half field runs in the 85 minute.

Judson was limping at the end of the last game (after being sub-ed). No surprise that he was out. However, Keisha was a surprise. SJ Mercury said he had mild leg fracture and will be out 2-4 weeks. So, we should expect to see Flo for several more games.

Credit to Vega for the PK save and was happy that we got him a clean sheet. He had been solid in goal.

Team was better playing with the lead, but still sat back too early. Nice win, but it's going to be hard to build on playing in Houston.

On Saturday night, while I was at Avaya, one of my good friends was attending a Broadway production of King Lear. Hillary Clinton was in the audience. No question which of us is the lowbrow, but three hours of Shakespeare would seem like weeks to me, vs the game which may have provided all the joy we're going to get this season.

Interesting, I didn't read it that way at all. There are almost always ebbs and flows in games. I don't think San Jose sat back as much as Portland started putting some more effort in. But even then, they didn't get very many opportunities and never truly wrestled control away from San Jose. The fact that the Quakes scored a second goal before Portland could even really figure out what happened was a big marker that the attitude of the team was different.

And the Quakes pretty much pressed until the end of the game, even getting close to scoring in extra time (that 6 minutes was a long time). A total turnaround considering the Quakes were almost guaranteed to blow early leads prior to that game.

Godoy did a phenomenal job shutting down Valeri to the extent is was hard to even find him on the field. I've not seen that too often by any team.

Danny played well and definitely fits this system better than other options. Removing Vako and Wondo (and adding Yuell) did wonders for our ability to move the ball in the offensive 1/3. Replace Magnus with TT (getting Lima back on the field) and I'll be really happy :)

From a system perspective, there was much better coverage when folks got beat. I'm guessing Almeyda made it such that the center backs didn't have a man and could switch/cover as needed. That coupled with what looks like Jungwirth's better ability to read the game likely had a lot to do with it.

On the opportunity side, we made WAY too many, last minute, lunging challenges in our defensive 1/3. Mostly by Cummings. Thank god he made those, but a slightly better weighted ball and they would have scored 3 or 4 pretty easily (again, more credit to Godoy for preventing that). Until our defense is sorted, it's still going to be a long road.

This may be the worst ever performance of Portland against us. Some of you guys said they were bad in previous games but I didn't expect it to be so bad. Also, the most ineffective Valeri. He seemed to score on us on free kick or other ways almost every time. He also used to hack the hell out of us as did Chara and Nagbe use to but always got a free pass. I think he gave the ball away right at kick off for the third goal. Did he also lose a step or two like our Wondo?

And that hack Guzman need to hit the gym.

By the way, when will VAR finally go our way? Does anyone remember any use of VAR ever that gave us the advantage?

Oh my god, that reminds me... when we scored that first goal, who else went "Oh, NO". I mean, I was glad to be wrong this time, but I was sure that we were going to get complacent and lose.

Yeah, he's killed us before, but I believe this was not the first PK Valeri has missed at Avaya. I seem to recall his missing an earlier one that preserved a Quakes result (draw or win) in a closer affair.

My reaction was, "well, at least we won't get shut out this time." (And I was happy for Shea because he has far too many detractors.)

Quakes were at over 250 minutes of scorelessness at home. Nearly entirety of three full games.

Nice post. The only concern I'd have with replacing Magnus with TT right now is that: a) Magnus has finally started playing better, and does have a decent shot from distance as one of his best skills; and b) TT has never demonstrated that he can do that (shoot from distance) consistently. It might still prove to be a very good idea, though, depending on who we're up against, and how well they defend against different attacking styles.

I too noticed the numerous last minute, lunging challenges. We were on thin ice at times.

Great album. Showcases the Who at their height. For a live taste, Live at Leeds (about the same time) is a winner, too.

Disagree. The first 15 - 20 minutes of the second half had the Quakes playing a more methodical buildup and less pressure. Additionally, Portland adjusted by having their centerbacks bring the ball up the middle of the field with no stopping them until close to the Quakes penalty area. If Portland scores the PK during this time, I think the later part of the game would have been very interesting. After the PK and some subs, the Quakes controlled the game and should have one or two more goals.
