I meant based on the actual experience from the Founders Cup. Right now everything is projected costs, but I'm sure there will be unanticipated expenses.

The Founders Cup and the league will, as anyone with a spreadsheet can tell, be very different. (Assuming there's ever a league.)

Even if you wait and see what things cost in the Founders Cup, it will STILL be projected costs and there will ALWAYS be unanticipated expenses.

    THAT'S WHY TEAMS FOLD.

I don't disagree with this. Maybe I phrased that wrong .What I mean is that those on the sidelines can watch the Founders Cup, see how everyone makes it out financially and make a determination on whether or not this is something they want to sink their time and money into.

That is, is it more of a sustainable growth league like CFC and DCFC have advocated for, or will it be a spend your way to the top eff you we're the Cosmos sort of league.

I can't really mask my trepidation about being in a league with Cosmos and Miami FC.

    I'm pretty sure that's exactly what's happening.

Several of the clubs with the wait-and-see approach are ones that would have to convince additional ownership/sponsors to come on board before such a move could even be considered.

I wish we were one of them, and I think we would have been if we were allowed to go back to our home stadium, but alas...

I don't know much about Virginia Beach's owners, but NOLA Jesters have always struck me as very risk-averse. That might be completely unfounded, but I don't get the impression that they're going to just jump into an unproven, potentially expensive endeavor. They're in a good position, however, when they're ready, assuming they don't hold out too long and USL puts a team there.

As I understand it, Asheville City is waiting for their stadium renovation.

Chattanooga FC hosted Guatemalan powerhouse Comunicaciones FC in an international friendly to open the season. Looked fantastic in the first half, but conceded two goals in the second half for an 0-2 loss. Guatemalan ambassador to the U.S. was in attendance, with over 7,200 of his best friends.

To be perfectly honest, they seem to have built a really strong squad.

I don't see how they will be able to sustain it in front of the tens of people who show up, though.

A pre-season recap. I've already posted about Comunicaciones, so I'll keep this focused on the other three matches.
4/6 - hosted Detroit City FC. Thoroughly dominated them, but (to form) had problems actually scoring. Did manage to get one in, and won 1-0. Attendance: 4,129. Note, this game was simultaneous to the Red Wolves home opener (and outdrew them).

4/27 - hosted AFC Mobile in a 9-0 absolute woodshedding. No issues finding the goal that night. Met AFC Mobile's announcer. Nice guy, was just happy to be there. Attendance: 3,872. Most memorable bit was the Chattahooligans singing the entirety of Bohemian Rhapsody while up 8-0:

5/4 - Star Wars night - hosted FC Bugeaters. Miserable day. Stormed all day, let up briefly just before kickoff, then absolutely pissed down the entire match starting about 10 minutes in. CFC again had trouble scoring, but won 2-1. Bugeaters had the best goal, though:

I can't find an official attendance number from this game but they announced 1,200-something in the stadium.

And that gets us caught up. ¡Vamos, Azules!

Rather wild game ended in 2-2 tie. Greenville appears to have studied the cynical game plan the Silverbacks used in the playoffs last year. Lots of cards issued, including a justified straight red in the 88th minute to Everson Lima for a wildly dangerous tackle.

Chattanooga FC controlled the game, but Greenville bunkered and played a very physically aggressive game that, despite the several yellows, worked in their favor, because the refs were tolerant.

Both CFC goals were from Max Wilschrey, the first to open the scoring and the last to close it. (5' & 60')
Greenville's first goal was on a PK, where where CFC's GK made a bad challenge on a breakaway. That wasn't controversial. What was controversial was that the breakaway happened by GvlFC's player pulling CFC's player backwards off the ball, which sort of encapsulated the tenor of the game.

Overall the game was very fun to watch: CFC's finesse game and Greenville's fast counters provided a lot of offense. The crowd (only 'official' announcement I can find is "over 3,000" - they announced 3,100-something in the stadium) was very loud and GvlFC clearly came with something to prove.

It's imperative at this point for CFC to find a counter to the tactic that Greenville and Atlanta have found success with, since it would be foolish for opponents not to use it until it stops working, despite how unpleasant of a style it is.

Next weekend, Chattanooga FC welcomes Real Betis Balompié, the only team to win both at Camp Nou and the Bernabéu this season, for a friendly that will likely require the mercy rule.

Last night, Chattanooga FC hosted Real Betis Balompié. It was hot. Hella hot. 6,115 fans watched CFC take the lead in the first half (Joao Costa!) and lead until Betis scored the equalizer in stoppage time. CFC could have (should have!) had three by halftime.

The second half brought a bunch of changes in the 11 (for both teams, I think) and Betis really began to bully the Blues. The next three goals and bulk of possession was from the visitors. Then... Betis committed a penalty and Alun Webb buried the PK (welcome to Chattanooga, Alun!) and in stoppage time CFC's Zeca scored off of a free kick bringing the final score to 3-4. What an amazing night for Blues. Even with a loss they still won.

Before I give an update on on last night's match, let's review CFC's history at home with the Revs, shall we?
Maybe the team should have read that prior to the game

Spoiler alert: the Revolution's team speed on turf undid us again.
Actually, more accurately, two terrible defensive lapses were the culprit. Two very poorly played passes out of the back were intercepted for Georgia goals.

The first was early: Ruben Morillas flubbed a back pass to the keeper (or... something) which led to an easy Jamar Oakley goal (he scored every goal for Georgia).
Joao Costa tied it back up and Daniel Valenciano put CFC ahead in stoppage time.

Georgia tied it up in 73' with (I think) the other lazy pass out of the back, and tacked on another goal in there and Chattanooga couldn't find the equalizer as the Revs were happy to clamp down their defense at that point.
    The game ended 2-3.

Long overdue update. I've been out of the country since the Revs match, so that's the last game I actually saw in person, but we live in a crazy age where I've been able to watch every one of my non-division soccer team's games despite being 20 miles off of the coast of South America.

After CFC's rocky start to the season, they managed find their form the following weekend with a 4-0 trouncing of Inter Nashville. It was, frankly, a defensive clinic. Nashville could get nothing past the midfield and Chattanooga was firmly in control the entire game.

The following Wednesday, they hosted Atlanta SC (formerly the Silverbacks) and applied another drubbing: 3-0. Again, totally in control. Not a huge crowd, due to the rain and it being midweek: 1,638. The rain has been a bit of a constant this season.

I'll pause here and mention that CFC streams their matches on YouTube and the quality is very high and the experience very good. Their peers in the conference, on the other hand...

First stop on their road trip was to McDonough for their rematch against the Revolution. Time being a flat circle, defensive lapses nearly put them in a 2-0 hole to start the game: a sloppy back pass to the keeper prompted D'Amico to foul the Revs forward. Thankfully, they missed the penalty. Shortly after, another defensive miscue led to a Revolution goal. CFC 0 - Revolution 1.

From there, CFC turned down the screws and began owning the game. The Revs' counter was still a threat, but 2 Chattanooga goals (Walsh: 30', Lima: 60' with a bonkers header from about 40 yards out) got them back into the lead and they stayed in control until the last desperate push at the end of regulation and through stoppage for the Revolution. The defense stood strong, CFC wins, 2-1. Everyone exhale.

The Revolution's stream was fine, albeit fairly low resolution.

Short turnaround from McDonough on Saturday to Asheville on Tuesday. I was trying to pick up dinner and missed this match completely. I know it was very rainy in Asheville. CFC won 2-0. The place I was getting food from had the Venezuela/Brazil match on. The audience was fairly evenly divided.

The next Saturday took their road trip to Alpharetta to face "Atlanta" SC again. This (like the Revolution game) was streamed on MyCujoo and was absolutely terrible. The game was (probably) fine, I wouldn't really know. I didn't get to see any of CFC's five (!!) goals because the service would buffer, halt, bounce around in time, etc. Anyway, CFC was 5-0. MyCujoo is awful. This was forwarded to me and I pass it on to you, dear reader, if you ever have to deal with it: https://dctid.com/2019/06/the-state-of-the-streams/

Finally, last night brought the return home for the Blues. They faced Asheville City in a match that would determine first place in the conference and the winner of the Blue Ridge Derby (the trophy is a beer barrel). Juan Hernandez scored first in the 14', but ACSC tied it up three minutes later. A mere two minutes after that, Alun Webb scored, putting CFC ahead 2-1. At this rate, it looked like we were going to have a barn burner, but that score stood through halftime. It was a fairly chippy game, quite a few yellows (I need to look up CFC's card accumulation), but Chattanooga again started to assert control. Finally, in the 80', Joao Costa headed an assist by Zeca into the net, and Chattanooga was content to revert to a defensive shape and hold the score until the end. 3-1 Chattanooga, attendance: 2804. CFC remains on top of the Southeastern conference.

They play a friendly against another Guatemalan powerhouse, CSD Municipal, tonight at an area high school, but we shouldn't expect many starters given that they played last night and have a game on Wednesday.

Speaking of, that Wednesday game is their postponed Inter Nashville game that was originally scheduled to be the season opener. It's at Antioch and if CFC comes away with any points, they are assured at least one home playoff game. That could be decided as early as Monday, when Greenville plays at Inter Nashville (big week for Nashville): if Greenville also comes away with any points, both GVLFC and CFC are almost certain to host playoff games (CFC definitely, GVLFC has such a huge GD over ACSC that it's almost certain). Chattanooga FC and Greenville meet next Saturday, July 6th, in what may determine the regular season conference champion.

Personally, I would like Nashville to get at least 1 point from their last 3 games to eliminate the Revolution. They control their own fate, however, since they meet the Revs at home on Saturday. That is 4 games in 8 days for them, however.

I get back home on Thursday, so here's to at least one more match at Finley before the Founder's Cup!
