60,739 is a lot of people

Let's hope they can build on this support – and hopefully the competition will also drive Barcelona to try for bigger occasions like this, just as Atlético wanted to beat Bilbao's record. Barça's Mini Estadi only holds 15,000, and the alternative ground bigger than that is.... is....

The table is tighter due to the Barça win, they're now 3 points behind. If Atlético dropped 3pts and the teams finished level, Barça would win on the head-to-head rule

(After 24 games, 6 to go)
    1 Atlético Madrid 66pts, 2 Barcelona 63pts, 3 Levante 51pts, 4 Athletic Bilbao* 40pts, 5 Real Betis 40pts

*Bilbao had a narrow 4-3 escape last week, and they lost 3-1 on Sunday at Granadilla Tenerife (7th).

Yeah, it's exciting! I was cautious in the wording, because the reporting and record-keeping has been quite patchy sometimes. The previous known record was 99 years ago, Boxing Day 1920 at Goodison Park, Dick Kerr's v St Helen's, a 53,000 attendance. (Even the Rose Bowl crowd in 1999 might not be a women's world record, although it's a Fifa record, 90,185. But more about that later.)

I've watched most of the game: Atletico started brightly, possessed well, and nearly scored in the first minute of the match. It kept the pressure on Barca's back line, which struggled to get the ball out of their defensive third for the first 10'-15 minutes. But Barca grew into the match and gradually their midfield play seemed to improve. After a scoreless first half, the visitors had the better of play in the 2nd half, finally breaking through with a goal when their center forward headed in from a corner. They'd score again fairly late a AM defender headed (or kicked?) the ball of her own goal post, at which point Duggan was there to knock in the rebound. And so Barca won a match it dearly needed to win, 2-0.

I was interested to see how Barca moved around L. Martens, their talented Dutch winger. She started the match on the left wing, where she usually plays for country and club, but in the last 20 minutes of the first half she spent a lot of time inside almost playing the role of attacking midfielder--something she never does for The Netherlands. She started the 2nd half on the right wing and then again shifted into the middle of the field and became more of a play maker. In any case, it was a good, competitive match between two good teams. I have to add that AM's Sampedro has the wildest/wierdest hair I've ever seen on a female soccer player. It's looks like the hair of a 16-year-old surfer from California or somesuch--all stiff and sticking almost straight up in places. Crazy--she seems a good player. Lot of good players on these two teams, natch.

Thanks for those Barca games, Hotjam2. As a fan of the Dutch national team, it's been interesting to see how Martens plays for Barcelona. In a word, differently! With the The Netherlands she often gets the ball and barrels down the wing or inside toward goal and tries to create scoring chances. She does that with Barcelona, but not as often. Given the Spanish obsession with possession, she pulls the ball back more often, holds up play--sticks with the Barca/Spanish style of passing the opponent silly, which is what they did to the Norwegian team in yesterday's CL match. She did make a nice play to set up Duggans for her second goal. Martens seems to fit in with the Barca style fairly well, given her ball skills, but I'm sure it's been something of an adjustment for her there, as it is an adjustment for any player moving to a new team, in a new country, with a different culture and style of play.

I've been impressed with the French player Hamraoui for Barca--she is a good holding midfielder. Does she play for the French NT at all? I just checked the recent France match against the U.S. and she wasn't on the French squad, which surprised me a bit.

the one French poster Shj@ probably knows more, but I believe Hamraoui was a causality of France poor showing a the Euros 2017 which ended up the immediate firing of what was a very good coach(Enchoufri) for the current one known as the Deacon, who take it, purged from the NT, Hamraoui as well as others like Tolleti, Leger, Lavogez, Perriset(even though they played vital parts destroying Jill Elllis horrible coaching in that year's SBC).

if any Spanish fans are out there; wonder whats happened with what I thought was Spain & Barca's best player, Patri Guijarro? I mean, I know she'r probably injured, but for how long?(as we're inching oh so close to the WC)

It depends if they really want The Record or not :∙) Barça can certainly do better than their highest (12,178 last year). Atlético got 5 times more people in.

At the bottom, Madrid CFF are now in the relegation places, after they lost to Logroño in the north:

    14 Logroño 20pts, 15 Madrid CFF 18pts, 16 Málaga 17pts

Beckmann and Madrid are playing at home to Málaga on Sunday. The winners would move up to 14th, out of the relegation zone.

    Barcelona 3 - 0 Valencia (video / report) - Duggan 18, Torrejón 84, Martens 87
Levante 0 - 4 Atlético Madrid (video / report) - Jenni Hermoso hattrick
    Athletic Bilbao 1 - 2 Espanyol - Athletic's 2nd loss in a row

At the bottom, Madrid CFF won but stayed in the relegation zone (15th), because of a vital win for Logroño (now 11th):

    Madrid CFF 1 - 0 Málaga - (match report) - Estela [Fernández], 23' pen
    Sporting Huelva 0 - 2 Logroño - (match report) - Banda 24', Judith 82'

Another crunch weekend is coming up – the bottom 4 teams all play each other, in Seville and Málaga. On Saturday it's Atlético (1st) v Betis (4th).

Betis took the lead, but it ended Atlético Madrid 3 - 1 Betis (video), (Ángela Sosa 18', Esther 24', J. Hermoso 40' / Virgy 12'). 2nd-place Barça beat Logroño 4-0.

(After 26 games, 4 to go)
    Top:
    Atlético Madrid
    72pts, Barcelona 69, Levante 51, Athletic Bilbao 43
    Bottom:
    11th-16th
    Sevilla
    25pts, Logroño 23, Huelva 23, Albacete 21, Madrid CFF 21, Málaga 20

A credit to having a full-size league with 16 clubs, the relegation battle is immense this season – 6 teams are still competing for the 2 places.

Sevilla are in a good spot - they won 3-0 over Madrid CFF with Jenifer Morilla's double. Last-place Málaga beat Albacete 4-2 (video / report) to stay in contention.

In the 4th v 3rd game, Athletic Bilbao beat Levante 2-0 (Vanesa Gimbert 4', 70') - Athletic's first points in 3 games. Again they used the big stadium, and got 24,985 attendance at San Mamés.

Actually my question is slightly off-topic here also, @Tapas&Fútbol, since it's basically about Nadeshiko Japan NT: at just two months from WWC, it's still uncertain which GKs will make the roster of Japanese NT and which one of them will get a starting place.

Since, after SheBelieves Cup, it became clear that Erina Yamane is one of the contenders, and since you said that you mostly follow Real Betis FC, I'd like to ask for your opinion about Yamane's current level and state of form: how did you see her in the games she played for Betis this season?

We're midway through this weekend, the 4th-last game of the season. No surprises for Barcelona, who beat Málaga 6-0. Mid-table Espanyol got a good win over Rayo, and third from bottom Albacete were unlucky to lose 1-0 to Athletic Bilbao.

Sevilla got another point to virtually escape relegation, away at Real Betis in the Seville derby. Attendance was nearly 24,000 at the Benito Villamarín stadium.

First of all I want to point out that I’m not a genius at assessing soccer players. I can’t compete with Johan Cruyff, Pep Guardiola or, let’s say, Jill Ellis :whistling: lol. Anyway I’ll try to do my best.
In my opinion Erina has shown a noticeable improvement in her level since the beginning of this season. She seems to be a bit more confident, more composed and less prone to make mistakes.
I’m hoping very hard for Erina to being in France next summer. She and Merel Van Dongen will be the only two players representing Real Betis at the WC.

Matchday 27 last Sunday - the league leaders took a long time to break down their 13th-place opponent in the southwest. But it ended Sporting Huelva 0 - 3 Atlético Madrid (J. Hermoso 50' pen, Ángela Sosa 60', Esther 87')

In mid-table, Sociedad got a shocking 6-0 win over Valencia, 2 goals for Nerea Eizagirre, and the relegation battlers Logroño and Madrid CFF couldn't get any points. Matchday 28 has started early – due to Barcelona's trip to Bayern – and Barça won 4-0 at Madrid CFF as Alexia scored twice in the 2nd half.

thanks for the info, hopefully she'll be back for the WC. Watching Barca's win over BM(replay below) some strong performances from Maria Leon(at CB), Losada at mid & Mariona finally coming into her own at fwd(attacking options been usually the weakness for the Spanish NT)

what's also nice is that both Barca & the NT play similar styles, which will help no doubt at the WC

and then if Patri comes back, will even make it a stronger midfield presence

Liga Femenina: Week 28: Close win for Atlético Madrid - see video below. In the relegation battle, Málaga lost a last-second goal to Huelva (90+4'), drew 1-1, and stayed last. Logroño rose to 12th by beating Rayo, 3-0.

Week 29, the penultimate week: Wins for Atlético Madrid (3-0 v Valencia) and Barça (6-2 v Sevilla). In the relegation zone, a shock win for Madrid CFF 1-0 at Levante (3rd), and Málaga drew 0-0 at Athletic Bilbao (5th), but they're still in the danger zone, because Fundación Albacete beat Espanyol 3-2.

Sunday is the final matchday at 11:00 GMT.

Atlético Madrid, 81pts, lead Barça, 78pts. Atlético can retain the title with a draw at Real Sociedad (6th), while Barça are at Tenerife (4th). The key relegation games are Logroño v Albacete, Málaga v Rayo, and Madrid CFF v Athletic Bilbao, and I can't explain more cos it's too tense.

Two weeks ago Espanyol lost narrowly to Atlético Madrid, while beating local rival Barcelona's top attendance, which is well below other Spanish teams.

Week 28: RCD Espanyol 0-1 Atlético Madrid (Ángela Sosa 31')

Week 30: the champions are Atlético Madrid (84pts), who won away at Sociedad to wrap up the title, and the mantle of top scorer: Jenni Hermoso, 24 goals.

Atlético & Mexico player Kenti Robles seems to have the golden touch:

2nd-placed Barcelona (78pts) lost their must-win game, 1-0 in Tenerife. It's Barça's 2nd league defeat, and AIUI only their 4th loss in all comps this season. BIIK Kazygurt are looking really really good right now :D

    Real Sociedad 1 - 3 Atlético Madrid (Beltrán 57' - Esther 14', 45', 67') - www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKi8krjHGqY

    Granadilla Tenerife 1 - 0 Barcelona (Mari Jose 56')

First-half goal disallowed, if that's not clear.

    Liga Femenina table, from 3rd:
    Levante 57pts, Tenerife 54, Athletic Bilbao 50, Real Betis 48, Real Sociedad 47, Valencia 35, Espanyol 35, Sevilla 29, Logroño 29, Rayo Vallecano 29, Madrid CFF 27, Sporting Huelva 25, Málaga 25 (R), Fundación Albacete 24 (R)

The relegation fight was ridiculously close – Madrid CFF escaped thanks to a win over Athletic Bilbao; plucky Málaga CF won at home but still went down in 15th on the head-to-head rule with Huelva (14th). And Fundación Albacete sunk 2 positions and were relegated in 16th – Logroño beat Albacete 4-1 to ensure Logroño's survival.

Wow, I was aware that Liga Femenina had a lot of teams, but I just realized how many games per season the teams actually play in this league! Erina Yamane started 22 games: in Japan this would mean starting more than all the games of the whole season (10 teams in Division 1, so a total of 18 match-days). In Spain, she missed 8 games instead!
