I hate to act like a wannabe mod, but can we merge these two player movement threads? I get the theory behind separating them, but the offseason threads were a headache. Given the slower pace of movement during the season, I think one combined thread should suffice.

Nope.;) Back in the day we had them merged together, but then had non-stop complaints about actual announcements being buried by the discussions about things like whether MLS can consider Canadians domestics (I'm topical!). ;)

That being said, we could do a better job of making sure to move non-announcement posts over to the discussion thread.

Bout time that was announced, since he has been on the roster since compliance day. Of course, since it has been rumored for a while that he is being looked at by European clubs, he may never play a first team game for the Fire.

Also, the Galaxy add a homegrown:

And the corresponding move to that to free up a senior roster spot:

FYP, since European clubs are looking at him, he'll be sold before he ever sees any first team action for us. This all about the "funny money" here in Chicago.

Yeah, it is about actually getting money for him instead of him just going for free. Sort of like Richards in Dallas and possibly Roberts in Dallas as well (though he will at least play USL games for them). I sort of expect you'll see more of these moves over the next few years, particularly for teams that have USL squads. The Union signed a 15 year old that Euro teams have been looking at for a few years to a USL deal last year. FCD has locked down a few players like that and so has Seattle.

However, considering who you guys have put in goal the last few years I wouldn't be too sure he doesn't actually earn a start at some point. ;)

It would make sense if we had a USL team, but we don't.

No way we have a 14, 15, 16 or 17 year old starting in goal, that's how old he'll be during the contract. So if he'll even does start for our first team, we will have extend his contract and probably wait another two or three years before he sees any action.

I hope more will follow like Zalalem. If you aren't getting playing time or if your career is not going anywhere, they should just push for a move to MLS.

Good depth pickup if at the right price.

So if someone is waived/parted ways by mutual consent during the season they are free to sign with any MLS club (i.e. free agent) at any wage as long as the transfer window is still open? Would this also apply to contracts bought I wonder like Gashi or GDS?

Gashi was waived, not bought out, so the Rapids are still taking his cap hit. He is free to sign and even outside the window (since he was a free agent before the window closed) and any salary his new MLS team agrees with will be taken off of the Rapids cap hit and put on his new team's cap.

This was always coming after the pre-season. Add that to the fact that he was the only non-first team signed player to start on Monday for Tacoma and it really doesn't surprise me that they want to get him into the first team.

I wonder if it changes anything for him, tho. Well, aside from a few more ducats in the paycheck. Locking him up until 2023 (with team option) is a benefit for the team, but I’m not sure he gets any first team playing time outside of USOC.
