So a rapidly approaching March deadline with no real plan in place and leadership effectively closing their eyes, gritting their teeth just hoping “things will work out” while holding little to no leverage with which to negotiate their way out of a problem they created. Sounds oddly familiar.
The season hasn't even started and the "Galaxy gets favorable treatment" whining has already commenced around the league.
That article didn't exactly prove anything regarding fair treatment for the galaxy. I think Landon and Beckham are the only real examples of favoritism and that was truely for the good of the league. If Gio walks away from guaranteed money that is his business. There is no rule against it. I wouldn't do that if I was him but you can't point to a rule that says that is not allowed. Just cause other GMs are sad about it doesn't make it favoritism. My vote is still that we buy him out.
Its just so much money for Gio to leave on the table especially when its the Galaxy's problem. I do not understand what we are trying to do ( I do not have access to the Athletic article).
I say renegotiate Gio to a one year, $1.5M deal, and drop off a suitcase full of $4.5M in laundered cash in front of his vehicle door as he is getting in. Nothing more needs to be said.
It starts off feeling like a stare-down but by the end, I kind of feel like P.Diddy's eyes have more of a "did I leave the gas on" quality about them (yes, slight Eddie Izzard plagiarism).
Not sure how you're reading this as "upset". I find it fascinating in a lab experiment sort of way. While I'm sure I'm reading way too much in to the situation this could be a precedent setting situation for the league. Full disclosure, I'm a supporter of another big spending club, so I'm very interested in what comes from this. My club wore the 4DP target until a couple weeks ago. This will most likely be hashed out with cash being splashed and the player released. However, I'm kind of hoping this drives a change to allow free spending teams another avenue to bring in top talent.
From the Galaxy front office to our ears, I've got certain information regarding Gio's DP contract. Certain things have come to light, and uh, has it ever occurred to us posters, the royal we, that given the nature of all this new shit, that, uh, instead of running around blaming the Galaxy front office, that this whole thing might just be, not, you know, not just such a simple, but uh--you know?
There certainly are a lot of things that people have been saying in the press and just assumed they were true without a whole lo of facts. The biggest ones on my list right now are a) can Gio really void a buyout? and b) can the MLS Players Union really get involved and void a renegotiation in which Gio is giving up guaranteed money? There are many more. We don't have many facts to consider. I guess that's what makes this fun. I don't suppose you'd PM me your new facts that you've become aware of?
Not sure if it'll end with clarity, but hearing that MLS will discuss LA Galaxy's proposal to restructure Giovani dos Santos' contract so he doesn't count as a DP in 2019 at the league's Product Strategy Committee meeting this weekend.— Sam Stejskal (@samstejskal) February 14, 2019
I don't like the sound of that. It makes it sound like Gio will be a Galaxy DP in some year other than 2019. That CANNOT be part of the plan!!
Hopefully our FO has some non-obvious super secret plan - because from the outside our DP situation looks like a poorly planned, wishful-thinking driven clusterfxxx.
I have to imagine that those last 4 words are on a whiteboard in Klein's office, next to the words "Plan A".
lol so we are gonna try to make gio a future DP but on our roster now? Alright let's sign 11 more DPs real quick and just split them across years 3000, 3001, 3002, and 3003.
Secretary of Independiente, Hector Maldonado, told Argentine media that the Galaxy, specifically, Guillermo Barros Schelotto, reached out to them to sign defender Jorge Figal:"Guillermo called us to ask about Figal, but for us he is a fundamental player in the team structure." pic.twitter.com/RYi3g9B1tL— MLS Buzz (@MLS_Buzz) February 15, 2019 Another defender linked to the Galaxy. I like it.
Seems like he's looking for an upgrade for Steres at RCB or perhaps an upgrade for Tomas Hillard-Arce as a backup
This Gio panic/concern is laughable. We've always complied with roster deadlines before. Speculating about what happens if we don't? Please.
Hypothetically if Gio failed a drug test could we void his contract or ban him for the season? His fondness of partying is well known, the only thing the club would have to do is do a random drug test some point in the next 2 weeks and our problems could go away.
