Thanks. How many did MB and Roldan have? If you point me to a good site, I’ll stop asking Louisiana07/09 style questions.

Is Long a good ball winner / man marker? Thanks.

Another monster B1 game from Adams. He was the best CM with the NT last year. He is backing that up with B1 performances. 3G might want to build the midfield around him.

How would you compare the strengths and weaknesses of 26 yr old Long to 23 yr old Miazga, given that they're both NYRB products?

Long is older but won Defensiver Player of the Year while I believe that MM was a DPOY candidate before he left.

What I recall about MM was that he was viewed as very strong defensively and wasn't asked to do much distribution.

Is either defender known for being a ball-winner vs. shifty dribblers and cutters?

CMs usually have a lot more touches than FBs. Pretty typical facet of the game.

LOL - hard to argue against that statement by itself!

I would point out that the concept being discussed is that the Lima/Adams role is a FB/DM hybrid where one of our high impact players can have a big influence on the game. However, it seems pretty clear from this one game that the position doesn't get the CM touches.

In summary, I was trying to make the point that putting one of our highest impact players in a position where they don't see the ball that much while concurrently putting a player with material defensive deficiencies in the high touch DM spot isn't the best way to improve our odds of winning.

impact isn't directly proportional to # of touches.

Their age is irrelevant. I'm making the choice of who is the best XI now. If you're good enough you're old or young enough.

Another factor in that is players complementing one another, as Long does because he's fleeter of foot than two galoots in Miazga or Brooks. They are poor complements. This has caused some problems with the NT so far when they've been asked to cover any space. It should be one or another. Not a pure question of who is better.

As far as that is even concerned, club prestige isn't the end all be all as a metric. Long has been performing well with the NT (as has Zimmerman). Then they get the caps, transfer to say the Bundesliga, and all of a sudden they are better? They are the same player. You can't tell me that Adams was a much worse player 2 weeks ago. He wasn't. RB Leipzig had nothing to do with his development.

Miazga's development would have continued if he didn't choose the immediate money in joining the Chelsea loan army. Instead he's stagnated for the time being. Now back in the Championship, and at the bottom, which doesn't even give him a better club association than MLS. MLS has discernibly improved since Matt was there.

    Based purely on talent atm.

    --------Weah---------Sargent------------

    Pulisic----Adams------Mckennie------Dest--

    Garza----Brooks-------Miazga--------Yedlin

    -----------------Horvath------------------------

Was tempted to put bello at lb, but ill give it a year to see if he can get that starting spot at ATL. Garza may be slow, but at this point hes better than Robinson and villafana.

Miazga has improved materially in the last three years. Not sure why you would think he stagnated... my only guess is it is associated with club situations. Not sure the Championship isnt a good place for a CB. MLS improved over the years, but not sure it is that great from 2015 to 2018.

What basis are you using to say that Long has faster feet than brooks and Miazga? It’s one thing to looks quick enough in MLS but another in B1. Wrt to MM, I don’t recall thinking that he had slow feet when he was playing well at NYRB but wasn’t following closely.

Three years ago, it was pretty clear that MM was better than AL as both were in the NYRB organization, correct?

How can I tell? I use my eyes. He's also played with the national team against Italy and Peru. So there's that. MLS isn't a slow league in terms of athleticism.

I don’t think one can readily compare how one looks vs MLS/B2/Championship vs those who play in the majors using “my eyes”.

To “my eyes”, there are lots of college players who look better than NBA ballers but it’s different when the game speeds up. Same with Heisman trophy winners.

I’ll try to go back and look at the Italy and Peru games.

I’m hopeful that Long is a good complement for brooks because I agree that there’s upside wrt JB’s partnership with MM. That’s why I’m asking the question about his man-marking and ground based ball-winning.

You can tell athleticism opponent independent. Just ignore everybody else and compare to normal standard after watching thousands of players with good national teams. He was much more mobile than CCV on the same field as him, in spite of being smaller. I can't even believe this is being questioned.

I’m not challenging your perspective as I don’t have one on Long. I haven’t seen him play except a couple of NYRB games and this most recent Panama game and he didn’t stick out to me.

Built the way that we just played this past camp, I'd say our XI probably look something like this:

    -----------------Sargent----------------
    Weah----------------------------Pulisic
    -----------McK---------------------------
    ---------------------Adams--------------
    ----------------Bradley/Trapp---------
    LB-----Brooks----debate---------RB
    ---------------Horvath------------------

Super random question but why did you put the keeper at the top and the striker at the bottom? There isn’t a right or wrong way to post a line up but I feel like it’s almost always the other way because the players positions match up to your own sense of left and right.

    If pool is fully healthy....

    Pulisic————Altidore————Arriola
    ———-Llegtet^———Mckennie————
    ———————Adams———————-
    —Long——Brooks——Miazga——Lima^
    ———————Steffen———————

Attacking Subs: Weah, Sargent, FJ, Mihailovic, Wood

Defensive Subs: Morales, Chandler, Yedlin, Ream, Williams

Assuming Altidore is willing to work in the high press, or I’d play Sargent for his hold up play. Arriola played well in Berhalters system today and is willing to track back, I’d give him another shot there against better competition to see how he does, but could fit in a Weah or Amon on the wings as well. Llegtet gets the 10 until somebody proves better, Mckennie at the 8 and causing disruption similar to Roldan, and Adams breaking up play on the counter press at the 6. Defensive line is where it gets tough. I’d play a CB at LB who will drop into a back 3 when the RB moves up like Lima has done past two games. For this I’d choose the left footed Long former midfielder, but would not be opposed to seeing Robinson here if he can be more consistent. Could also see giving Brooks and Long a game or two together to see how they compliment each other. I really like Lima in the hybrid role not sure how he will do vs. better teams but I’d give it a shot. I feel like Yedlin would struggle pinching in and making quick touches in the midfield, Chandler might be better in this type of role than him. I can see Steffen or Horvath in net. Steffen seems a bit shaky with the ball at is feet, how is Horvaths distribution?
