I don't think it is much. SKC will place decently, given their history, so a first and second round pick for what was a high first round pick is not much IMHO. We got something and Eric gets a fresh start (and I wish him well).

if all players had the same work ethic and professionalism as eric, soccer would be better off-- i have always had a soft spot for him and i hope he gets a real opportunity to have regular game appearances and positive results

2 draft pics for a player who should be in the USL? I think it is a good return.

Eh, every year the super draft becomes less valuable due to the reach of MLS with signings, improvement in academies, etc. They got something for Erik but the odds of those two picks ever becoming actual MLS players is not great. When you look around MLS, I think Hurtado is still competitive as an inexpensive depth forward. MDS obviously didn't see Hurtado as fitting his system which is understandable. Now he needs to find the players to fit his system.

Man that's cold. Old, cold and bitter (or is that a pint of bitters?).

I don't think we could get any more but as far as journeymen domestic players go Erik wasn't bad at all.

I dont think it is cold to suggest Erik is a USL level striker. He doesn't score much in MLS, and is a depth player at this stage. Being a starter in USL would be a good fit for him.

I've always thought of him as MLS backup level but mostly because of his domestic status. He is built like a tank and is very fast but his finishing has been lacking for most of his career. We shall see how SKC use him and how he does there.

Cristian Techera- his contract ends december 31, in 4 days

i guess he becomes a free agent and the Caps get nothing when he signs with a new team - right?? the Bosman rule

At 400k I think they may let it expire and see. I doubt anyone else in MLS will take him at that price.

so if it expires in 4 days, does that mean techera is totally free and can sign with any club beyond MLS and the Caps get NOTHING ?? and if he does sign with another MLS club, the Caps get some MLS money to play with ?

    illuminate me

Explain MLS rules? WTF? Do I look like Kreskin to you? ;)
I really have no clue but I'd say $400k is a lot so I can see their motive for letting it slide. Maybe a leverage play by MDS and we'll see a last minute deal with Techera if his agent can't find him anything.

Really low, imo. I see it much more as a crapshoot than it may have been five or six years ago, or even before that.

with less than 3 weeks to training camp, MDS and his staff sure have a lot of holes to fill-- and he stated that he will be heading to euro and SA over the next 2-3 weeks- as of right now, the Caps are the weakest team in MLS, IMO, with only 1 significant player in reyna- the rest are 'joe average' or less

MDS has a lot of money- i reckon up to $11-12 mill to fill out the roster of up to 11 players and some will come into the summer - we all can hope that a slow pace will be majorally ramped up

anyone know what has happened to techera whose contract expired 2 days ago ? i figure that if no MLS team signs him, the Caps get NOTHING, unless they gave him a qualifying offer in order to cash in on a trade outside of MLS

They need to get some media buzz going next week. One possible way to do that is to do a trade and get into the early part of the first round of the MLS Superdraft and select local boy (Victoria) Callum Montgomery. He's a CB (a huge need position) and the local media will eat it up!

This is the same way that Kevin Payne jazzed up the soccer market in Toronto when he took over a dreadful TFC in 2013 and picked up both Cancon Sigma guys Bekker and Welshman in the first round.

Now granted, I don't how good Montgomery is as a CB but his would be a "so Whitecaps" front office move, so I see this as a definite possibility.

Callum's rated #2 at the SuperDraft and the Caps would have to offer some significant player(2) to get to draft higher-- maybe techera and blondell would be part of the deal ?? i think you are right... he would be a good addition to the Club and he is a left-footed CB which would be another bonus, along with his ability to get some goals, probably on set pieces

Skill set: Left-footed central defenders are both a rarity and a commodity in the MLS draft, and Callum Montgomery is going to be in high demand provided he shows well at the Combine. The British Columbia native has been one of the best defenders in college soccer this season.

Claim to college soccer fame: Along with being the Conference USA Defender of the Year in 2018, Montgomery offers a threat from set pieces, scoring 11 goals in his 73 games over four years with the 49ers.

Reasons behind the ranking: Standing at 6-foot-2 and clean with the ball, Montgomery seems like a pretty sure bet to at least stick for the first season. Being a left-footed defender bolsters him in the rankings, as it helps teams fill a position of need.

Best MLS fits: It’s easy to lump in the Canadian sides, though the Vancouver Whitecaps are sure to be on the hunt for a center back after the departure of Kendall Waston. He could be considered by Real Salt Lake as a depth option.

Percentage chance of starting 5 or more games in '19: Montgomery has interesting tools, and center backs are known for being successful making the jump to MLS when given opportunities to play. He’s in the 25-30 percent range of getting at least five starts.

If he has a strong combine this weekend, then the price tag will go up quite a bit. But if they can package some allocation dough with a player, then anything can happen.

Since the draft has become more and more of a crapshoot in recent years, I don't think it's an unrealistic possibility you can package a reasonable offer for NCAA players.

At the end of the day, they need to generate some hype in this market. You're not doing that with the signing of an out of contract journeyman CB from Velez Sarsfield in Argentina or Maritimo in Portugal. Granted, those guyd may be the real key signings from an on field standpoint as the season begins, but they don't create the buzz in the local market that a BC boy being in the top 3 of this draft would.

    That's my reasoning here.

And now, with Canada bombing out of the World Juniors, there might be a crack of media space (after the Canucks and Vancouver's favourite pointy ball team, the Seahawks from Seattle) in The Province or GlobalBC to hype up the Canadian content in this draft, especially for Montgomery.

They can get J.J. Adams to phone/skype Montgomery and do a story on him. Can we get a little effort here? I'm sure the Victoria Times-Colonist will run a story for their hometown boy.

The Seahawks losing this weekend would help provide some more media space for next week and beyond. However, they'll probably fill it with more stories about pro lacrosse in its umpteenth reincarnation (and counting) in Vancouver.

The Caps have almost done everything to negate their impact in the community, including the media- the Club was lucky to have alphonso for 2018 to hype their product or IMO, the average attendance would have dropped below 20 000

I don't read of any rumours about the Caps moving up in the draft, so with their first pick maybe then get another local boy defender in Alex Comsia. That might generate some local media buzz until possible signing announcements next week (?). Obviously, I'm just guessing on the possible announcements.

if that gets media buzz, it would go to show just how low the bar is -

the Super Draft of college grads just doesnt bring much relevance or player quality (even the Union recognize that by getting cincy to give them $200 K for their 5 picks) and will probably go the way of the dodo bird by 2020-2021- players already 22-23 have already missed years of professional development

sad to say but alex will probably end up in the CPL or be some USL loanee such as fresno where he will be a second stringer
