The team I'd least want is Juve. Barca and, especially RM, aren't close to the level they've been for the last decade, so I'd feel confident we could get by either of them if we play well. Bayern are improving, but still levels below what they've been in the past so I think they'd be my first choice considering we just played Porto last year.
I'd really love to avoid Dortmund and Juve - both are flying in their leagues and I'd tire of all the "Klopp vs his old team" talk that would come with that tie and anything to avoid Ronaldo. We just played Porto last year, so ok with skipping them - I like diversity in my opponents! Madrid we have some relatively recent history with so I'd prefer to avoid them at this stage - but would be more than happy to see them in the quarters. The last time we played Bayern was in 2001 in the Super Cup (a certain ginger headed LB scored a cracker in that match) and we've 2 wins, 4 draws, and only 1 loss against them so we're due for a match of significance with them (we beat them on away goals in '81). Barca we have some recent history with - beat them en route to our UEFA Cup win in '01, we played them in the group stages of the following season's Champions League, and we knocked them out in '07 en route to reaching the CL final.
Agree that Dortmund and Juve are the teams I'd most like to avoid at this stage. But whatever, this is where we belong so bring 'em on.
The Klopp v BVB narrative would get old, and I'd want to avoid them on that score, but I think we'd handle them fairly easily over 2 legs.
I agree. I wouldn’t mind Dortmund. They are in a similar situation to us. They have a huge opportunity to win the league this year and holding off Bayern will be their main priority.
I'm honestly not too worried about any of our potential opponents. Bring it. You gotta think that all the top seeds will be holding their breath that they don't draw us.
The odds are on that - but it isn't necessarily true. they could get Tottenham....or Athletico Madrid and we could draw,Dortmund or Valencia (EDIT - Porto!). Madrid/Juventus = Liverpool is an even(ish) match-up. The only ones to really avoid next round are Barca and Bayen IMO..... We hardly ever (maybe never) play Bayern in competition .... so, let's hope that statistic doesn't change....
Liverpool face Bayern Munich. Pleased with that draw. I think we will beat them. Manchester City play Schalke, a team that they can beat while resting their best players.
Schalke vs Manchester City Atletico Madrid vs Juventus Manchester United vs PSG Tottenham vs Borussia Dortmund Lyon vs Barcelona Liverpool vs Bayern Roma v Porto Ajax v Real Madrid
Was hoping city would get atletico - oh well. I’m ok with Bayern. We can get at them. Tottenham - Dortmund will be excellent. United - PSG ...... could be ugly OR Mourinho pulls off one of his trademarked CL bus parkings.
There are no gimmes in the Champions League as we can will confirm. But I bet pretty much everybody else was happy to avoid Liverpool.
only concern I have is we play away 2nd leg. there isn't a team anywhere I'd worry about, if we play 2nd leg at Anfield.
It might be a blessing in disguise to play at home first considering we will be without vvd for the first game.
Our draw is the pick of the bunch. Will Ronaldo terrorize Atletico again? Spurs vs Dortmund should be lively. Can Lyon's midfield pick Barca's apart like they did to citeh?
Dates confirmed: Liverpool will face Bayern Munich in the last 16 of the Champions League. Monday's draw in Nyon pitted the Reds against the German club. Anfield will host the first leg, which will take place on Tuesday February 19, before the tie is concluded at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday March 13.
So our schedule around that looks like this... vs Bournemouth [Possible FA Cup tie] vs Bayern @ Manure vs Watford @ Everton vs Burnley @ Bayern
I'm okay with City staying in CL for as long as possible. The overall draw is a good one. Either Juve or AM go out. Ajax has a chance to put RM out. Lyon/Barca is a really good match up and could go either way. PSG finally has a chance to go through and Spurs BVB should be fun. Roma/Porto ensures there will be at least 1 weaker team in the quarters.
Only tricky bit is we go to Old Trafford after Bayern and they play the week before so will get the midweek off before the game, but we'll have to much for them either way.
doesn't change your list, but the Manure game has been moved to Sunday 24th 09:05 EST. https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1060288/Man-Utd-Liverpool-Arsenal-Chelsea
