Putting aside the controversies from the semifinals to the circus of stonethrowing-gate and the embarrassment of moving this final to Spain, it seems to me that River Plate has buried its streak of humiliating eliminations in the Libertadores. Losing 4-2 to Nacional of Paraguay to being eliminated to a 9-man San Lorenzo to being routed 1-4 by America de Cali... all over.

A reversal of roles. Boca Juniors had a dynasty in the 2000s and in 2012 and in 2018, it flirted with a resumption of its glory days. But it was not to be. As teams, River is a far more well-oiled unit; Boca has great players, but the team chemistry is lacking.

River eliminated 4 former champions in the knockout bracket and that included the last champion. It's too bad, as I wrote days ago, that River's fans - the majority of the working-class, everyday people who dreamt of celebrating a title win at home vs. their biggest rival - had to settle for TV. But winning is better than losing, and it's more than a tad ironic that Boca's jersey for this match has "Qatar Airways" stamped on it. They won't be flying to Qatar this year.

And on a lighter note, Benedetto's tongue moment will become a historic meme - one which River fans will never stop using against him.

With Benedetto on the field, Boca are champions. Without him, they could have been out in the SFs.

I will say it again, forcing the losing team to stay on the field for the title ceremony is just plain mean. I'd want to be in the locker room breaking shit.

I don’t understand this sub either. I felt it as soon as he was out. Ábila is a stiff who just plays bully ball and isn’t very good either. Benedetto is in the form of his life and gets subbed out. GBS has some explaining to do.

I don't think anyone can argue River as a more worthy champion:

Round of Sixteen -- Eliminated the current leaders of the Argentine league (Racing)
Quarterfinals -- Eliminated the defending champs of the Copa Sudamericana (Independiente)
Semifinals -- Eliminated the defending champs of the Copa Libertadores (Gremio)
Final -- Eliminated our eternal rival (Bobo Juniors)

EL MAS GRANDE SIGUE SIENDO RIVER PLATE

Yeah you could say he's not fit to go 90 but considering how many other guys got hurt in the stretch.

Pavon and Villa were severly lacking on the wings.

Pavon has been trash for the past year, especially after the WC. He was great in 2017, but ever since he started getting called up to the NT he has shown absolutely nothing

Maybe that's why they make them stay on the filed then ;)

Anyhoo, congrats River, my condolences Boca. For a neutral it was fun to watch. I'm absolutely exhausted... has been a long day... woke up at 4 am for the MLS Cup final and stayed up until 1.30 am for this.... was worth it though.

If that was the case then he should’ve brought him on in the 60th min. Used him as a sub, similar to River using Quintero as a sub. Granted, his first few shots went to the moon but he finally connected on one.

GBS better just take that job in Atlanta.

The BIGGEST difference between River and Boca is this. When River players were attacked by Panadero in 2015, Boca lined up to play. When Boca faked injuries, put on eye patches even though they were fine minutes before walking in, River players stood with them. Gallardo went to see them, see how they were. D'Onofrio as well. Even Angelici said he thanked River for being with them and giving them all they needed, only to back on his word. Tevez said not one river player or director cared how they were, even though there are pictures of Gallardo and D'Onofrio going to see them and Perez admitted that he was getting whats apps from Ponzio, Casco, and Scocco.

Boca players in 2015 not only demanded to keep playing, but they applauded the fans, who not only attacked River players DURING the match, but also threw bottles and other missiles on the field for hours making it impossible for River to leave. Lets not forget, River never asked for the points in 2015, the match was suspended with River winning after boca could not manage a single shot in 135 minutes. Boca basically refused to play under any circumstances before CONMEBOL threatened them, and lets not forget, VP of CONMEBOL Carlos "Chiqui" Tapia is a boca socio and season ticket holder. Angelici said he would take all administrative paths possible to not play the match. Why even hire footballers Tony? Why not just hire a bunch of lawyers and try to win the 2019 Copa that way?

Then, lets talk about sportsmanship... When boca was winning.... The scum Benedetto couldn't even celebrate a goal without provoking a River player.

Then, when River wins, and embarrasses boca in the biggest match in history...

The differences between the clubs are so vast. I also wanted to put up the picture of D'Onofrio consoling Guillermo. Various other players were also consoling Boca players who were crying including Ponzio, Casco, Quintero, and others...

Boca is a classless team with people like Tevez, Abila, Perez, Benedetto, and from the top down with their president Angelici and other directors like London and Crespi... and the president of the country, Macri, who let his fanatism for boca get in the way of his better judgement and made this whole situation even worse than it should have been.

The whole thing was a circus, but the bottom line is River was down 3 times, yet won the series 5-3. Boca's mystique is gone. They have been eliminated now 3 times in international cups by River being outscored 7-3. If you throw in the Supercopa Argentina, which was billed as the Final to end all Finals before this, its 9-3 in favor of River in elimination matches since 2005.

River is the team now with most points, most victories, and most goals in the history of the competition.

I'm glad this circus is over, and I can't wait till the club world cup.

    VAMOS RIVER CARAJO

How weird that Chile's rating is so low. Maybe there was another game on?
