How popular is this show in Germany or abroad? I'm considering giving it a watch. Maybe binge during Thanksgiving break. Deutschland 83 got me interested in the German mystery/thriller genre. Though, I'm not a huge fan of the language

The first two episodes are tough to get through as nothing seems to make sense (in the sense that it is very sophisticatedly structured) but then it is possibly one of the best shows of the last 10 years together with GoT. The last episode of season two brought the probably the most unexpected wtf moment I can remember of in all of tv. But make sure to watch it in German with subs as the US dubbing is pretty abysmal
How do the ratings compare to other top German series? If I'm not mistaken, Deutschland '83 wasn't well received in Germany right?
It always depends on which tv station is broadcasting it. RTL had the rights to 83 but they bottled it. ARD are the co-producers of Babylon Berlin. They are basically one of Germanys BBCs and they started the show off on Sunday prime time when they usually show Tatort, a tv show that has been running since 1970 continuously and successfully. So the starting spot was tough but the media speaks of a dream start: 24,5% market share or 7,83 mil viewers last Sunday

After telling my Contemporary Africa professor about Deutschland 86 (of which his wife hated), he recommended I try Babylon Berlin. I might do so next during Thanksgiving break.

Puh I dont know about US netflix. Each season has 8 episodes so if you have 16 episodes in season 1 then yep, that is what is available until now
