American Soccer has lost one of it's best and brightest. The US flag at the NCAA match vs. Rider should fly at half mast. I truly hope that someone with juice will read this and make it so. Steve parker was an astute student of the game and a true gentleman. He communicated and read about futbol incessantly. The best Parkerism I recall is one that makes sense today (at least to me): "Defense is too important to leave to underclassmen" It was typical for Freshmen to start by playing Forward and work their way back as they matured. The 1986 squad (NCAA runners up) was comprised of all seniors along the back four. Unlike the Zips of the past 20 years, the 1980s squads were primarily defensive sides. They gave no more than .5 GPG for 10+ seasons So, they would get their goal and then just "Park" it. Parker's squads were very traditional English 4-4-2 and physically imposing (bordering on dirty) forcing referees to make difficult booking decisions every match. Akron Soccer would not be what it is now but for the contributions of Steve Parker. https://gozips.com/news/2018/11/13/akron-mens-soccer-mourns-the-passing-of-steve-parker.aspx
I appreciate your sentiments, but there are very prescriptive rules about when the US flag may be flown at half-staff: "The President of the United States can direct how the executive branch of the government flies the flag, including traditions or customs for flying the flag at half-staff." Black buntings or other remembrances might work.
I was going to mention this earlier. If Akron has a school flag that is flown perhaps that could be flown at half-staff. I don't even think that it would be appropriate to fly the Ohio flag at half-staff. It sounds like he had Parkinsons and/or Alzheimers. Both are awful diseases. Parker definitely was a big factor in putting Akron on the map but I was somewhat surprised that he wasn't there before 1982. Akron did have some varying degrees of success (I looked at the media guide - link below) prior to Parker but he seems to be the one that kept the Zips successful and grew the reputation of the program. https://gozips.com/documents/2017/8/25/msoc_17guide_web.pdf
I genuinely did not realize that flying US flag was so strictly prescribed. Thanks for the education. I am not sure that my various employers over the years have always followed these rules. Good to know.
Akron 3-1 Rider As it turns out, the flag was at half staff after all, but I think it was just weighted down by all the slush falling from the sky. So cold.
I was watching on ESPN+. It was obvious that he was unconscious before he hit the ground. He was like a rag doll after the initial impact. Terrible.
Yeah, a lot of people do it. Many governors have incorrectly directed that the US flag be flown at half-staff.
The Zips have now won five consecutive games and outshot SIU Edwardsville, West Virginia, Western Michigan and Rider by a combined 74-32 margin, including 28-12 on goal. https://gozips.com/news/2018/11/15/...-ncaa-tournament-with-3-1-win-over-rider.aspx https://gobroncs.com/news/2018/11/15/mens-soccer-pushes-14-akron-but-falls-in-ncaa-first-round.aspx This Bronc can play on my team: https://gobroncs.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4400 I expect to eventually see Pablo DeCastro at the next level, someplace.
This only governs federal facilities...other organizations can, and do, fly their flags at half mast beyond this.

Muuss on Wake vs Akron: "For a college soccer fan and for a soccer purist, these are two teams that like to play. We played them my first season and it was one of the best games I've been involved in since I've been here." Needless to say, I'm excited about this game.
As a Wake fan, I'd much rather play (and lose, if it comes to that) to an Akron that actually attempts to play technically than to get run over by an overly physical direct team. I don't think there are two programs that have "technical soccer" more ingrained in their DNA than Wake and Akron. Suffice to say, I'm excited as well. Should be a great game.
